Hi, Rebecca! Welcome to the group! I wish I could recommend a book from Vietnam, but most of the books I've read were about the Vietnam war. I have a bunch of books set in Vietnam listed here:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...
and more on the Vietnam shelf here:

Have a wonderful trip!

Sinead | 13 comments Hello!
I am Sinead and I am British living in London but I grew up in the US. I am very excited about finding this group and hopefully joining both reading groups in the new year.

I also love reading books about different places and eras. I have been scrawling through the books looking at where they are set to find new, interesting reads, and it has been a fairly tedious business. So it has been great to look through your group suggestions and easily find new books and like-minded people!

Thanks and I am looking forward to chatting in the threads!
Sinead

I love reading foreign books so long as they have a sampling of the language. Like Laura Resau , Laura Resau 's What the Moon Saw by Laura Resau , What the Moon Saw has both Spanish & Mixteco in it.

LaShya, hi. So great to hear that you want a sampling of the language. I agree with you. I love learning new words and languages. My most recent read is "Rivers of Babylon" by Nelson DeMille. He adds the words I need to help me understand and visualize the Middle Eastern culture. DeMille's one author you might enjoy.

David Lafferty (danteexplorer) Hi, I'm Dave, I love all things Medieval and Renaissance (I took a trip to Italy last summer). I like Umberto Eco and Dante (I just published a book about Inferno). LOVE historical fiction! Great to be here.

Could have done with you Dave when I was studying Italian and Dante at uni. Have you read The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl by Matthew Pearl. Ingenious murder mystery based around the first US translation of Dante by the Harvard set and of course set in Boston.

message 466: by Mary (new)

Mary McFarland (marymcfarlandauthor) Lashya wrote: "Does Nelson DeMille add a glossary/glossaries at the ends of his books ???????????" Lol! Lashya, it's not necessary. DeMille's vocab is pretty straightforward. He does add a layer of technical jargon, but for those who love DeMille, this is perfectly great.

message 467: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read DeMille. Where would I start???

I was debating about reading Dante Club, got mixed reviews. Did you like it? You studied Italian, how cool, I would love to be able to really read the Commedia in the original. What translation do you find the most accurate?
grazie!

message 469: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 87 comments Prego David.....I liked it...it's a bit slow at times but if you like Dante and you'll obviously get all the references, then go for it.

Over 30 years ago, so cannot recommend a translation...

This is by far the coolest idea for a group ever. I plan to try the monthly reads. Not sure about the challenges though. I'm a librarian and political science instructor in North Carolina. Thanks for starting this group!

Anne (papergirl42) | 328 comments Anne - frequent flyer I found this group on Goodreads and it mirrors what I have been doing on my own... Choosing books in part on their geography. I love to travel but being an arm chair traveler here in Pinehurst , NC is great fun and so rewarding too. Coupled with resources from the Internet, one can get so much information and enjoyment finding out about people and places in books.

Patrick Youngblood (goodreadscompatrick_youngblood) | 5 comments Hi--I'm Patrick and I'm so glad to have found this group. I've been a traveler all my life. I left the US the minute I graduated from college to live in London, where I spent 12 years. Then Paris, Venice, Greece, and more recently many places in the US (San Diego, Nantucket, etc.) When not traveling, I'm reading travel books. With an eye to the future, my partner and I bought a house in Vieques eight years ago and spent three fun, frustrating years renovating it (I recently published a book--Tropic of Sunshine, about the experiece. In any case, glad to be here. I'm going to start reading your recommendations now!Tropic of Sunshine

Hi Diane! We divide our time between Vieques and Washington, DC, though we think about our little house in Vieques every minute we're not there. I guess you could say it's addictive. Have you visited the island?

I collect non-fiction travel books (such as by Paul Theroux) and also read a lot of fiction set in interesting places. Am new to Goodreads and searched for a group related to travel. Anne, I'm not sure if there is a way, other than reading the posts backwards (starting on the last page of posts and working your way back to the first).

On the top of a discussion, on the right, click on "date" (it is near " newest"); this should change the order of the messages.

Sheila | 4 comments Thank you for the welcomes! That is funny that Cape Cod is such a vacation place but at the same time it's good to get away - especially in the winter and spring. I'm reading The Life of Pi for now and it's been great to be able to travel to India this winter.

Anna | 40 comments Hi everyone! I'm Anna, a grad student from Poland. I love to read books set in different countries, especially non-fiction, so I think this group is an ideal place for me. I've been unofficially following your "Around the World in 80 books" book challenge since joining Goodreads in May but wasn't sure I'd manage to continue it. Half-year later I still follow this challenge, giving myself more time than a year-challenge, so it's about time to introduce myself :)
