Hollis Duncan Recently, I realized that three books stand out as my favorites, by about a country mile: A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean; The Secret History by Donna Tartt; and The Whisper of the River by Ferrol Sams. I'm looking for more books like these and wanted to reach out to the goodreads community for suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Sandy If you liked The Secret History try Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisla Pessl- very similar and quite interestin

Pippin for something with the poetic prose of Maclean and centered on a family living in the near West, you might like Kent Haruf's Plainsong and Eventide:

Hollis Duncan Sandy and Pippin thank you both so much - looking up these titles now! Thanks again. Can't wait to read these.

Have either of you ever read Ferrol Sams? I think the books skew male and definitely southern but he's not a bad writer; for a physician in his 70s I believe when he wrote his "Run with the Horsemen" trilogy.

Hollis Duncan Finished Plainsong and it was ok.

Selby Mitchell If you want to go a little more non-fictionish I recommend Where Rivers Change Directions by Mark Spragg and The Solace of Open Spaces by Gretel Ehrlich. Happy reading!
