They are called 'red herrings!' They help to lead the reader down blind alleys.

You create a scenario whereby the plot runs concurrent with the main plot distracting the reader. I had someone killed in a hit and run, then a girl was found strangled and then a policeman mysteriously is found in a disused mineshaft in a body bag after being injected with curare. The three events all tie in together they were all comitted by the same person and instigated by the main villain in my plot!

No problems red herrings I do quite well!
