congrats Reena. Now you will be addicted to Flipkart. I get this 'high' immediately after I search out a book and make a successful purchase and a second 'high' when the parcel is delivered and till I open it and take out the book, smell it, feel it and read the blurbs...

I second that :) Haven't yet had courage to try them for more expensive items like electronics and stuff, but they are really great for buying books.

Dream's Sake

Ajay (ajay_n) | 331 comments Usually, 'Landmark'. Occasionally, I buy in bulk from book expos. For me, nothing tops the experience of physically inspecting each copy & then buying it!

@Ajay, I know what you say. Bookshops have that effect on me too. Before I got addicted to online shopping and when I was with my parents, I was a frequent visitor of TBS and PaiCo - the 2 major bookshops in Calicut then. I used to buy books in bulk. I have spent quite a lot of money on books a decade back. Now I am more choosy and prefer to buy online as I get upto 40% or sometimes even more discount. I feel bad for bookshops. But then I have to take care of my money, too.

message 59: by Ajay (new)

Ajay (ajay_n) | 331 comments @ Smitha, I concur. The trend is completely shifting towards online shopping. It saves effort and cost. Bookshops have become more sophisticated these days, they have branched out into gizmos, music, cutlery, greeting cards, stationery and what not. I am particularly referring to Landmark at Bangalore. The place is a buzz over the weekends. Another thing of notice is that it is such a diverse crowd. Gone are the days when bookshops used to be quiet. I think bookshops have evolved and might survive because of this reason alone.

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Agree with you guys on the trend changing towards online shopping..

Though I prefer ordering online nowadays, can't resist myself from stepping into the bookstores whenever I come across one. And I always ended up buying one or two.. :)

they also had a stall there

i haven't found any books on the sites that piqued my interests yet, thoughl.

Siddharth Sharma (thegreyshades) | 405 comments Daryaganj(Old Delhi). People who live in Delhi very well know that there is a Book Bazaar which takes place every sunday. You can find any book you want.Lots of bargaining you will surely do but, surely for 1000 bucks you will be able to buy loads of books.

Besides, history lives at this place. The Bazaar was started during the time of The Mughals and it continues even today.

Other than that, Flipkart is the other option I frequently use.

You can try MG Road. There are many book shops in there and also you will find small time retailers sitting by the sides of the roads selling books.

There's Blossom Book House (mentioned earlier). Its on Church Street near Amoeba Gaming Zone. Then there is Select Book Store, Brigade Road (haven't been there personally but I've heard good reviews). Gangarams at M. G. Road is a place worth visiting.

for your opportunities mainly - National bookfairs, international book fairs, great libraries... etc. etc.
Here where I live, there are no decent bookshops, not even 5% discount in most, and no good libraries (fiction) to boot.

message 72: by Siddharth (new)

Siddharth Sharma (thegreyshades) | 405 comments Ohh, Yes, Delhi has got some good book Shops especially in and around CP. Its a place where many bookfairs take place but I still feel the culture of book reading has still not flourished in Delhi.

Book readers are mainly content in reading Self Help/Motivational books.

message 73: by Saly (last edited Sep 15, 2011 05:52AM) (new)

Saly It is Flipkart & Infibeam too for me and then there are some second-hand book-stores.

message 74: by Sudhang (new)

Sudhang Shankar | 130 comments it's true that there isn't much of a bookreading culture in delhi. or maybe there is, but it is too scattered, i don't know. you'll find lots of people in their twenties who have never read any books apart from those 'prescribed' by their schools and colleges.

but the bookfairs are amazing, i agree. and i've never been to the daryaganj market myself :(

Soujanya Murali (soujanyaps) | 54 comments Wow! I dint know about this store in Begumpet. Can you give more details Saly?

I usually buy books from Landmark. Earlier, before the mall era, I used to frequent the Abids roads on Sundays and spend hours checking out the books on the footpaths. I miss those days :D

I just ordered my first book on Flipkart. I hope the experience is good!

Good Lord! Dangerous combination of books and chocolates!! Bookstores have a feel that is quite unexplainable. I enter a bookstore and I start to feel positive vibes.Loads of books all around. Different sections, different kind of people roaming around with there eyes glued to the bookshelves. One day when I would retire, I'll open a bookstore with a Viceregal touch to it, somewhere in the hills of Uttarakhand.I'll be sitting on my resting chair holding a Ruskin Bond in my left hand and a cup of coffee in the other. I'll be content, I'll feel complete.

message 94: by Siddharth (new)

Siddharth Sharma (thegreyshades) | 405 comments I dont understand the reason why people exchange books. Books are meant to be bought, read and then shelved.

Storing and shelving books is as much fun as reading them I think..

You can get good discounts during their special sales, i guess twice in an year..

I am quite like that myself, its a little OCDish, but I note down the who/when/which book I have lent to and start following up after 15 days.

As for MB's I am glad I exchanged them. They would have taken precious space on my bookshelf
