Hi to the group. I have been following this discussion group for a while and I am truly enjoying the sharing, and the information. I am slowly understanding why I enjoy Nordic Noir, having been exposed to it through television, film, and most of all, books. I grew up in the state of Montana, USA. I understand the effects of weather and the natural environment on a life perspective. The Nordic characters have been a reminder of how all humans are similar and all cultures are not. I am also enjoying an experience of the governments of those countries.

Agree :-)
Hey hey hey what about my personal favourite Johan Theorin. "Echoes from the dead" The Darkest Room" "The Quarry" NO Nordic list is complete without him. Has anyone reaqd "The Asylum" yet. Any thoughts.

Hi allI'm Tracey from London UK and I am really pleased to have found this group.
I'm a big Nordic noir fan and this has been enhanced by the excellent Nordic films and TV series. I probably started with Wallander books, then Stieg Larsson. Like Helen, I really rated the Johan Theorin books I read.
At the moment I am working through the Harry Hole novels in order.
Some great suggestions here for new authors - tack!
Has anyone read anything by Leif G W Persson. He won Glass Key award in 2012. Considered an excellent Nordic writer. Have not had feedback on him.
Read 2 of his books - "Between summers longing and winters Cold " And "Another time, another life" and really enjoyed them. I have yet to complete the trilogy but so far so good. The books are not just your basic who-dunit. There is a complex historical and political backdrop to the story which keeps your interest. You can tell that he has a strong background in procedural policing given the level of detail that is woven into the story.
Ooh, I've got to add those two authors to my eventual-shopping-wishlist :) Welcome to the group Tracey
How do we discover these writers? I have been looking at the Glass Key winners, But that is unfair and incomplete, so is it forums or award festivals. I am watching for Indridason's Strange shores to be released. He is consistently good.
Excellent reference source a-z.....http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/L_A...
Also interesting.

Naomi and I also use NetGalley and Edelweiss where we get ARC's to review - if either of us find potential books/authors we go and see what else they have written
Dee wrote: "Naomi and I also use NetGalley and Edelweiss where we get ARC's to review - if either of us find potential books/authors we go and see what else they have written"Edelweiss always has some great NN authors. Unfortunately, I haven't had some of the more popular ones, such as Jo Nesbo, approved.
I just use this and the other group (Scandinavian and Nordic Crime, with wider and less just noir audience) & friends' reviews, and overall GR reviews for the discoveries. Or for the decisions what to try next. :)Another place for getting an occasional crime (or other genres) ARC is readitforward.com (their title to win changes weekly). :)
Hi, I'm Erika, and I discovered this genre with... you guessed it, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.I loved the trilogy so much, and am so sad to think that the author won't be able to publish the 10 books he had intended for the series. Just imagine the possibilities *sigh*
I hope I can discover great reads here that can make up for that.

Oh yes Erika, there are some great Nordic writers. The best. Let me list them Johan Theorin, Jo Nesbo Asa Larsson etc
Thanks! I just added one book from Asa Larsson, and one from Jo Nesbo. I hope to check them out soon!
My personal Nordic favorite is Jussi Adler-Olsen. His books are so compelling & his hero (although boozy, damaged, separated/divorced and cranky--just like all the other Scandanavian detectives) is somehow more likeable to me and the books while being plenty dark and twisty have a funny light-heartedness that gives occisional respite from the doom and gloom. Whenever I read Jo Nesbo, I need months of therapy.
New favourite is Victor Amar Ingolfsson. I cannot put Daybreak down. He is sparse and economical with descriptions. Love his two main characters , especially Gunnar. I will and must find everything by this author. I must admit I found House of Evidence. But I shall try again.
Perhaps a Librarian could assist on this? Seems this writers name has been misspelled and therefore Daybreak appears under the misspelt name and I cannot find it under the correct authors listings at all! Curious how and why this happens so often!?!
THIS IS WRONG:

SHOULD READ:
Viktor Arnar Ingólfsson
Thanks.....
@Dee: I am a longtime lurker/reader who NEVER posts, but I have enjoyed this site and have bought many books because of the recs.I hope I didn't just step outside my boundaries by posting this site on Amazon (BBA thread)? I think people need to know that there are "friendly" mystery boards available to people who love the genre? If I over-stepped things, I will delete. This site has been nothing but friendly to READERS and it is much appreciated. ;)

IMHO if people are interested they will come to GRs but I for one already am concerned with too much cross over. I see daily more changed to GRs and it is a shame. If we want to go to discussion groups on amazon we would have done so. Same with reviews, I really hate that my reviews are getting put on amazon.

@Sharon: So sorry, I will go delete it. :)
G - leave it - you don't have to delete itSharon - reviews are not being put on Amazon from Goodreads, that is a fallacy - they may appear on 3rd party sites, if you enabled that in your profile, but they aren't on Amazon
ETA - I have mentioned the group on Amazon many times - ppl aren't necessarily goign to join, but its an option. Not everyone in the world knows about GR - so I see no issue with getting the word out there about it
G., I love the fact that you posted our group as a stand-out group on an Amazon group. What a compliment it is for us that you think we have created a group that is a nice place to hang out and discuss NN books!I think in a "time" when we are hearing so much re: negativity in groups,it lets us mods and our members know that we are doing the right thing. So please do not take your post down.
Your post above gave me a nice smile this morning.

I think you have created an AWESOME place for true mystery lovers, and I have bought MANY books based on the recs here. I don't post much because I don't know many people here, but appreciate the fact that this group is so welcoming and knowledgeable about this genre? Thanks for your kindness, it is much appreciated. I took the post down because I didn't want to be the n00b who caused problems.
Naomi wrote: "G. Absolutely not. In fact, Dee was telling me that she was kind of bummed when you took it down."You guys are funny! It wasn't worth making waves for me. At this point, I actually feel quite WELCOME posting here and I hope I can contribute? You guys have a great sense of humor. There are very few groups on GR that give open arms to a new poster, and I think your site is open enough to do so.
We don't bite...well Dee does but that is only if you are right near her). Anna and I are TOTALLY sane...yep, TOTALLY sane!!
Uh huh...she only claims to be same bit you know the truth...she only knows I'm insane because she is more...tales one to know one ;)
Hi all,The name's Andy & in a previous life i was a sports monkey but as i was falling to bits :0 the bookworm in me was resurrected!
Having visited Norway over the years (love the country & the people) it seemed rude of me not to try Nordic Noir, first finding Steig larsson thro the Millenium trilogy, one of my favourite series of books (& films).
There's a little more on my profile & hope to get to know you over the coming pages.
take care
Andy

Hi, I'm Elisabeth Elo, an American of Finnish descent from Boston, MA. I have a literary suspense novel (NORTH OF BOSTON) coming out in January 2014 from Viking. It has been compared to Nordic noir, especially Jussi Adler-Olsen. I have read a bit in the genre (Hoeg, Larssen, Ohlsson, Nesbo, Lackberg). I would like to read 4 or 5 more, not too brutal, more psychological than police procedural, especially women writers. Mostly I just want to read what people who know the genre think of as the best books, because up until now I have just been standing in the bookstore aisle judging books by their covers. Any suggestions?
Hi Elisabeth, welcome. :) Have you tried Karin Fossum yet? She's Norwegian, and her style might be what you are after.
Karin Alvtegen might work too; she's Swedish, and her style is more psychological often than pure procedural, but beautifully crafted.
And Helene Tursten definitely. A Swede, and her series has a female detective. Procedural with some noir, but with a good balance.
