Introductions
I'll keep my eyes open for any easy reads in Finnish for you then. (Mental note - next time I visit there I'll want to hunt for some children's books to bring too, as those would probably work the best).
Another neat ideas would probably be to ask the Finnish bookcrossers if they have any recommendations http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/30 or light and easy reads that would like to travel.
Or see some reads from here http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/searc...
Lukemisia Lapsille 2, Seitsemän Veljestä or anything by Minna Canth or Zacharias Topelius would probably work too - or try and see some random parts of a book to see if that would work.
(And... well, maybe since there are readers here from all over it wouldn't be a bad idea to add some Nordic language practice threads too. Like if there's something that doesn't make sense in a phrase or a book it wouldn't be a bad place to start)
http://www.borders.com/online/store/S... has at least some dictionaries too.
I was able to purchase a really nice finnish/english dictionary over the summer. It has made a BIG difference! I have access to some books and native speakers through my college. I am taking Finnish language at UC Berkeley. I appreciate the resource suggestions though. I am always looking for new ways to improve my Finnish.
I found a place in DC that is starting a swedish connections course for adults this weekend, that I just emailed for information

This is probably not much use to you but I use Google for help instantly ...words or entire paragraphs and you have a pretty quick solution to most queries. I love Google for this, living in Europe I often get stumped with something and translation service from Google has been wonderful....
I relied on google a lot when I first started out, and I still use it as a sort of super quick online dictionary. (along with websites like sanakirja.org and dictionary.com) It can be helpful for picking out the root word that needs to be looked up or dividing compound words into understandable chunks.

Hi-I've been going on for the last year about how much I love Scandinavian mysteries/thrillers. Then a friend told me about Nordic Noir. So of course I had to come.Such a great name!
Howdy! I'm a transplant from central Illinois who's lived in Phoenix, Arizona since 1976. I have a book blog where I review (mostly) mysteries. I got married for the first time almost ten years ago to an Englishman I imported. It's after 1 AM, and you want to know my Nordic Noir habits? My poor widdle bwain! I *think* it all began with Henning Mankell and Karin Fossum. I've since branched out and include James Thompson as one of my favorite writers.
Welcome, Cathy!! Same think with me with my love of NN except mine was Hakan Nesser and Karin Fossum.
Hi, guys. I'm Summer. I'm 23, I live in Louisiana, and I love to read pretty much anything, though I've only just dipped my toes in the water with nordic noir. A friend let me borrow his Millennium trilogy books and told me I need to read them ASAP. After the first book finally picked up I read them all back to back. I'm hoping to find some more books to tear through. :)
However, you got here, Ellie, I'm glad you are! :-) I will definitely take the blame.Cathy & Summer, I'm a transplant from Louisiana who's lived in central Illinois since 1979. It is certainly a small world.
Welcome to you both!!
Welcome, Summer.. I can't wait until you can read more NN..there is such a big world out there of it!!
My query too Old Crow.... I am getting confused as they are all Scandinavian and now books to read in a month for each....perhaps it would be good to consolidate for ease of clarity and discussion flow??
there really is no difference - the great thing about GR is that anyone can start a group about anything they want. Naomi and I had talked about starting this group earlier this year, but with our work schedules and other stuff, that didn't materialize until a couple of months ago. But different groups also focus on different things - I believe Ken runs the other group (correct me if i'm wrong)
I am just personally a bit frustrated and my own making. Set myself a personal goal before the end of the year to catch myself up on all the Wallander books (4) I had missed. BUT am very keen to read both Misery and Lucifer's Tears......such a problem of luxury! And here I am retired for the first year and behind on my reading?? Go figure.....

Sharon wrote: "My query too Old Crow.... There may be things that we talk about in this group that Ken doesn't talk about in his group. Members of Ken's group that aren't in this group and vice versa which brings different perspectives or discussions.
I know for Dee and I, that is why we are like the number of members isn't important to us, it is the discussion going on and what are people getting out of the group.
And I understand. I am new to this and want to take part so started Mercy today and when Lucifer's Tears arrives will hope to be able to start it. Am not good at several on the go....my limitation. So if I want to be in both, I had better get reading..... Happily.Bit of trivia... Mercy will be my first ever eBook Kindle read on my iPad2! Such fun....
Sad day today as the world reads of the death of Steve Jobs. So sad, way to young and a man that leaves such a huge legacy behind. Think most of us will have read or heard of his passing on one of Apples creations. His creations. We sure did...

You know the bizarre thing is that when I read about it on the internet, I went into my 22 year old son's room and told him that he had died, both my son(who is a computer geek) and his friend looked at me and said "Who is Steve Jobs?" My mouth hit the floor. I looked at him and said "You, two, and your generation of all people should know who he is!"
Surprising indeed....his creations have changed the music world, film world and on and on with all communications, plus how we read ...order what we hear and watch and read. What a strange term in Mercy.....ugly cases?!?!
Hi, I'm Jack and I'm from Nottingham in England but I'm currently living in Aberystwyth in Wales. I enjoy watching football (not the American kind), rugby union/league, cricket and ice hockey. When it comes to music I'm a huge fan of heavy metal but I'm open minded to all genres of music.I've always loved crime fiction but the series that got me into the genre were the Kurt Wallander books by Henning Mankell and since then I've been hooked.
Hi Naomi, Im getting about 100 email from the group every day. I tried to stop it by setting an RSS feed, but Í sitll get the daily message too. Any idea abou too stop the e-marriage and got them all in an archive. Thanks, James
I know James that I did mine in the beginning when I signed up. I was trying to figure it out, but couldn't. Does anyone know??
Jim..in the corner under the group avatar, you will see.."edit membership". Scroll down to the very bottom of the page where it says edit group discussions and click on that. This will bring up another page that you can select how you want to recieve "mail". Change it to what you would like.

Much of Nordic crime writing as so far written that I think it could called something else. The Scandinavian Crime Wave, at least in my opinion, a catchy genre name.

I've been active in both groups, so many of you already know me but I don't think I've officially introduced myself here. So... Hello everyone!
I enjoy both groups and as Naomi mentioned there does tend to be differences in discussion and perspective.
Glad to be here and there.
Dee wrote: "lol, hey Dave! haha! I knew Ken was a mod, but didn't really pay much attention to others - sowee!"Nice, Dee...nah I just went for tormenting poor Ken...now we are going to have to put a bullseye on Dave's back as well, and harass the poor man!! lol
Yeah, forget it...it is out there now!! And you know what they say about the internet..once it is out there, you can't take it back!! lol

God that is so cool...Dee and I were saying that we want to learn Swedish because we are so tired of books not being translated.
