Jure (hoornet) | 12 comments Since other groups employ this sort of group readings why not do a group listening?
Maybe 2 every month? One in SF/Fantasy the other in Mystery category for example?

What do you think, girls and boys?

message 2: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T | 0 comments I think it is a good idea.

John | 3917 comments I'm rather selective, and don't care for SF/Fantasy much, but if you folks want to try it -- knock yourselves out!

message 4: by Jure (new)

Jure (hoornet) | 12 comments It doesn't have to be SF...

aprilla | 254 comments I think group reads are great fun but I'm already committed to them outside of GR so... but why not just set it up and run with it, see how it goes?

If one of those books would happen to be on my to-read list I might be interested but I have too many things that would probably have a higher priority. BUT, if this is an idea you'd like to implement, please feel free to do so. We always appreciate ideas / topics to keep the group engaged.

If you'd like to determine a level of interest prior to doing so, maybe you could create a poll and ask the members of their likelihood to participate.

George Christin | 7 comments I'm in the boat John's rowin. I am very particular about what I read and I think I would only muddy things up.
Enjoy and I'll check in on the posts.

Tina "IRead2Escape" (tinar1121) I think it would be fun! Mabye do choices in a few different genres, so we all have something to choose from.

message 9: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 295 comments I would join in if it was a book I was already planning on reading.

message 10: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 63 comments Hi guys! I'm new to this group and new to audio books, so I am throwing my two cents in. I think it is fun to do group reads, I totally get that we all have a lot going on and everyone may not be able to participate every month or every 2 months. But it is fun talking about a particular book that we have all read. For me, since I am new to audio, it would give me ideas on new books to listen to.

message 11: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 115 comments I'll piggyback on Linda's comment and say that I am also new to the group. I would join in a group read only if I was ready to read the book, but think someone should start a GR poll and determine the level of interest. There are a lot of members in here, it doesn't take many to make a group read go.

message 12: by aprilla (last edited Aug 17, 2011 05:17AM) (new)

aprilla | 254 comments I do have another group where I do group reads (any format) but I'll commit to joining in the first group read here if it happens, whatever book it is, providing I can get it.
I like this group, there aren't that many specifically for audiobooks around :)

If it starts it just might take off, if not, nothing lost :)

message 13: by Charlene (new)

Charlene Intriago | 19 comments I don't listen to that many audio books but would consider it.

What about if one of the two book choices was available from librivox.org? Then the cost and availability wouldn't be a factor. With the thread already here listing good ones, there is quite a choice and it could end up a valuable resource while promoting a good cause?

hmmmm

message 15: by Christina (new)

Christina | 10 comments I am up for a monthly group read. I think I'd only do one a month b/c I have a lot of things I am listening to/reading. Maybe you could rotate the group read so the topic is different each month, S/F, Mystery, history, biography, recordings that have the best dramatized reading... ect. I think that way you are mixing it and offering different options each month and if people don't care for one of the genres they simply skip that month.

I have doing the group read without groups, I found that they introduced me to books I otherwise might not have read and found that to be a positive experience. But, there are some group reads I I just could NOT do and skipped them all together.

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda J (lajacobs) | 42 comments Well every time I've committed to participate in a group read I've dropped out or never started so I am a sorry partner in such an endeavor!

I see no reason why this group shouldn't have a Group Read topic, however if folks want to do so.

Enjoy,

Linda J

message 17: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) If the book is one of my to-reads then I'll go for it :)

Fantasy sounds good to me for starter.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan Southard (ssouthard) | 8 comments The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. This is a wonderful series and it has so much stuff!

Shelli | 66 comments Kelly wrote: "I would join in if it was a book I was already planning on reading."

I would also....and if the book wasn't hard to get on audio....I usually listen to cds.

message 20: by Kara (last edited Aug 30, 2011 02:15AM) (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 52 comments Think it sounds like a good idea.
- Agree with others that the more available the book is, the better its chances of success.
- I would suggest rotating the genre for each book discussion poll. (Fantasy one month, romance the next, NY times best sellers, etc. This group has a huge variety of interests and that way genres don't have to compete).
- Also, I would make sure a month is long enough to cover most peoples listening habits, (I generally down one audio a month, but that's with an ~ 12 hour listening period).

MissSusie | 2421 comments Susan wrote: "The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. This is a wonderful series and it has so much stuff!"

As much as I love Outlander and will listen to it any chance I get, I don't think a 32 hour audiobook would be a good first monthly read it may be a bit much and might better be saved till we see if this gets off the ground first.

As others have said if it is something I am planning on listening to I may join in. In November on another site we are doing a Neil Gaiman November and maybe something like that would work for a monthly listen?

message 22: by Sara ♥ (last edited Sep 01, 2011 09:59AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 243 comments I think it's an interesting idea. If the book sounds interesting and the library has a copy, I might participate...

I was also thinking that we don't really seem to use the group's bookshelf much. Maybe we could utilize that more by adding our favorite audiobooks (our 5-star listens) to the shelf as we come across them? Perhaps we could make additional shelves like mystery, science-fiction, fantasy, romance, nonfiction, etc. so we could find audiobooks others have loved in specific categories. Seems like it would be a good way to share.

message 23: by John, Moderator (last edited Sep 01, 2011 10:23AM) (new)

John | 3917 comments Interesting idea, Sara ... I think it deserves its own discussion thread.

message 25: by Christina (new)

Christina | 10 comments So, whats the final decision. Group listen or not?

message 26: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool How about a poll?

message 27: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I'd rather have some more comments here first than a poll.

message 28: by Jure (new)

Jure (hoornet) | 12 comments "I was also thinking that we don't really seem to use the group's bookshelf much..."

I agree!

message 29: by Jure (new)

Jure (hoornet) | 12 comments I am not a moderator and therefore can't create pools (no permission) otherwise I would do it as question before I started this thread.

message 30: by Jure (new)

Jure (hoornet) | 12 comments Let's start with adding 5 top audiobooks to the group shelf

message 31: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) I am new as of today but a list of top audiobooks sounds great as well as a suggested audiobook for every month. Those who want to join in and others go with the months when the selection appeals to them. I think there are enough members here that there would be enough taking part each month that it could succeed while being strictly voluntary. Just my thoughts.

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) I think a group listen and discussion is a nice idea, but maybe there should be two audiobooks in a month to provide a main book and an alternative, this would go some way to allow for the fact that, in addition to us having different tastes in books, we also look for different qualities in the reader.

I think thats a good option!

message 34: by binter (new)

binter | 218 comments I would be interested in an audiobook of the month. However, I could probably only keep up with one a month.

message 35: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) Gosh yes, stick to listening to one, but have the choice of two, and have two discussions running.

message 36: by Grumpus, Hearing aide (new)

Grumpus | 473 comments It seems there is an interest for this so if anyone would like to organize and lead the group on this topic please feel free to do so.

message 37: by Chris (last edited Sep 12, 2011 07:35AM) (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) No volunteers huh?! If there is still interest, I am willing to set up nominations / polls etc. Please note however, I am in the UK which could present the occasional delay in communication. Also, I cannot easily tell if something nominated is readily available for everyone. If anybody more suitable wants to take on this task, I will step down.

message 38: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments I am a vey picky reader..... If I liked the book, I might join in. The thing is, my tastes may not be what others want to read and vice versa.

message 39: by Running (new)

Running I think if we nominated books and then had a poll, that would work. And the library could be a good place to start as far as getting the books. And if you don't like the book, you can always skip that month.

I for one am willing to go outside my comfort zone and try a new book once a month.

message 40: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Have people nominate books, then pick the top 10 or so through a poll and then people can pick the book we want to read from that list. That way there's a bigger choice of books to read from. Then have discussions for the books chosen. I've seen this done with BOMs from other groups. It's nice to have a few to pick from especially when there's a book/genre you like or what's available at the library etc.

message 41: by Anne (new)

Anne (crazybakingmom) | 21 comments Depending on the type of book I am open to trying it. I am willing to stretch my comfort zone if the book sounds appealing.

message 42: by Erica (new)

Erica (blondechick80) Chris wrote: "Gosh yes, stick to listening to one, but have the choice of two, and have two discussions running."

I think this is a GREAT option!
I am for a group read myself. Most of the books I listen to I acquire through my town's online library- they use Overdrive- OFTEN there are long waits for the books, so if a list went out in advance of what was upcoming that would allow for us to plan better in terms of getting the books.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 58 comments I would be willing to try every now and then if it sounded interesting. I think we should throw a young adult book in there every once in a while because they tend to be shorter and popular. They also tend to be easy to find at libraries from the digital catalogs or CDs. I prefer the digital ones myself. I would nominate any that have recently been made into movies or will be soon since some people like to read and watch. :) Any ideas?

message 44: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 24 comments I like the idea of a group audio listen. I also appreciate the idea of rotating the genre from month to month.

If one book were picked per month and it was determined at least a month in advance (say list January and February picks now), it would allow time for people to request from libraries and listen to then jump in on group discussion. If someone happened to read rather than listen, he/she could still pipe in with comments about the plot, characters, etc.

I also agree with comments on being particular about what I enjoy reading or listening to and would be most likely to join in discussions on books within my TBR or that sound interesting to me. Cost is also a factor so I'd additionally stick with books either in my audio library already or books I can quickly gain from my local library.

My other thought is there is no harm in trying. Pick a book, start a discussion, see how it goes. If it seems to take off, excellent; then pick another one. If people don't use it then the group has lost nothing.

message 45: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'll nominate The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler Digging to America by Anne Tyler Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler because I have them. I'll also nominate Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane and The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next, #1) by Jasper Fforde . That's kind of a wide range.

message 46: by Anne (new)

Anne (crazybakingmom) | 21 comments I am in for Unholy Ghosts

message 47: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 24 comments Ooh, I'd also jump in for Unholy Ghosts.

message 48: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 63 comments I like this idea as well - so to start off are we picking a genre to start with or just picking books???

message 49: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2421 comments I think you should put up a poll with the choices and let people vote.

message 50: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool what choices?
