Should our group also have a montly book to listen?
I'm rather selective, and don't care for SF/Fantasy much, but if you folks want to try it -- knock yourselves out!
It doesn't have to be SF...John wrote: "I'm rather selective, and don't care for SF/Fantasy much, but if you folks want to try it -- knock yourselves out!"
I think group reads are great fun but I'm already committed to them outside of GR so... but why not just set it up and run with it, see how it goes?

BUT, if this is an idea you'd like to implement, please feel free to do so. We always appreciate ideas / topics to keep the group engaged.
If you'd like to determine a level of interest prior to doing so, maybe you could create a poll and ask the members of their likelihood to participate.
I'm in the boat John's rowin. I am very particular about what I read and I think I would only muddy things up.Enjoy and I'll check in on the posts.

I think it would be fun! Mabye do choices in a few different genres, so we all have something to choose from.
Hi guys! I'm new to this group and new to audio books, so I am throwing my two cents in. I think it is fun to do group reads, I totally get that we all have a lot going on and everyone may not be able to participate every month or every 2 months. But it is fun talking about a particular book that we have all read. For me, since I am new to audio, it would give me ideas on new books to listen to.
I'll piggyback on Linda's comment and say that I am also new to the group. I would join in a group read only if I was ready to read the book, but think someone should start a GR poll and determine the level of interest. There are a lot of members in here, it doesn't take many to make a group read go.
I do have another group where I do group reads (any format) but I'll commit to joining in the first group read here if it happens, whatever book it is, providing I can get it.I like this group, there aren't that many specifically for audiobooks around :)
If it starts it just might take off, if not, nothing lost :)

What about if one of the two book choices was available from librivox.org? Then the cost and availability wouldn't be a factor. With the thread already here listing good ones, there is quite a choice and it could end up a valuable resource while promoting a good cause?
hmmmm
I am up for a monthly group read. I think I'd only do one a month b/c I have a lot of things I am listening to/reading. Maybe you could rotate the group read so the topic is different each month, S/F, Mystery, history, biography, recordings that have the best dramatized reading... ect. I think that way you are mixing it and offering different options each month and if people don't care for one of the genres they simply skip that month. I have doing the group read without groups, I found that they introduced me to books I otherwise might not have read and found that to be a positive experience. But, there are some group reads I I just could NOT do and skipped them all together.
Well every time I've committed to participate in a group read I've dropped out or never started so I am a sorry partner in such an endeavor!I see no reason why this group shouldn't have a Group Read topic, however if folks want to do so.
Enjoy,
Linda J

Think it sounds like a good idea. - Agree with others that the more available the book is, the better its chances of success.
- I would suggest rotating the genre for each book discussion poll. (Fantasy one month, romance the next, NY times best sellers, etc. This group has a huge variety of interests and that way genres don't have to compete).
- Also, I would make sure a month is long enough to cover most peoples listening habits, (I generally down one audio a month, but that's with an ~ 12 hour listening period).
Susan wrote: "The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. This is a wonderful series and it has so much stuff!"As much as I love Outlander and will listen to it any chance I get, I don't think a 32 hour audiobook would be a good first monthly read it may be a bit much and might better be saved till we see if this gets off the ground first.
As others have said if it is something I am planning on listening to I may join in. In November on another site we are doing a Neil Gaiman November and maybe something like that would work for a monthly listen?
I think it's an interesting idea. If the book sounds interesting and the library has a copy, I might participate...I was also thinking that we don't really seem to use the group's bookshelf much. Maybe we could utilize that more by adding our favorite audiobooks (our 5-star listens) to the shelf as we come across them? Perhaps we could make additional shelves like mystery, science-fiction, fantasy, romance, nonfiction, etc. so we could find audiobooks others have loved in specific categories. Seems like it would be a good way to share.
I am not a moderator and therefore can't create pools (no permission) otherwise I would do it as question before I started this thread.
I am new as of today but a list of top audiobooks sounds great as well as a suggested audiobook for every month. Those who want to join in and others go with the months when the selection appeals to them. I think there are enough members here that there would be enough taking part each month that it could succeed while being strictly voluntary. Just my thoughts.
I think a group listen and discussion is a nice idea, but maybe there should be two audiobooks in a month to provide a main book and an alternative, this would go some way to allow for the fact that, in addition to us having different tastes in books, we also look for different qualities in the reader.

I would be interested in an audiobook of the month. However, I could probably only keep up with one a month.
It seems there is an interest for this so if anyone would like to organize and lead the group on this topic please feel free to do so.
No volunteers huh?! If there is still interest, I am willing to set up nominations / polls etc. Please note however, I am in the UK which could present the occasional delay in communication. Also, I cannot easily tell if something nominated is readily available for everyone. If anybody more suitable wants to take on this task, I will step down.
I am a vey picky reader..... If I liked the book, I might join in. The thing is, my tastes may not be what others want to read and vice versa.
I think if we nominated books and then had a poll, that would work. And the library could be a good place to start as far as getting the books. And if you don't like the book, you can always skip that month.I for one am willing to go outside my comfort zone and try a new book once a month.
Have people nominate books, then pick the top 10 or so through a poll and then people can pick the book we want to read from that list. That way there's a bigger choice of books to read from. Then have discussions for the books chosen. I've seen this done with BOMs from other groups. It's nice to have a few to pick from especially when there's a book/genre you like or what's available at the library etc.
Depending on the type of book I am open to trying it. I am willing to stretch my comfort zone if the book sounds appealing.
Chris wrote: "Gosh yes, stick to listening to one, but have the choice of two, and have two discussions running."I think this is a GREAT option!
I am for a group read myself. Most of the books I listen to I acquire through my town's online library- they use Overdrive- OFTEN there are long waits for the books, so if a list went out in advance of what was upcoming that would allow for us to plan better in terms of getting the books.
I would be willing to try every now and then if it sounded interesting. I think we should throw a young adult book in there every once in a while because they tend to be shorter and popular. They also tend to be easy to find at libraries from the digital catalogs or CDs. I prefer the digital ones myself. I would nominate any that have recently been made into movies or will be soon since some people like to read and watch. :) Any ideas?
I like the idea of a group audio listen. I also appreciate the idea of rotating the genre from month to month. If one book were picked per month and it was determined at least a month in advance (say list January and February picks now), it would allow time for people to request from libraries and listen to then jump in on group discussion. If someone happened to read rather than listen, he/she could still pipe in with comments about the plot, characters, etc.
I also agree with comments on being particular about what I enjoy reading or listening to and would be most likely to join in discussions on books within my TBR or that sound interesting to me. Cost is also a factor so I'd additionally stick with books either in my audio library already or books I can quickly gain from my local library.
My other thought is there is no harm in trying. Pick a book, start a discussion, see how it goes. If it seems to take off, excellent; then pick another one. If people don't use it then the group has lost nothing.
I like this idea as well - so to start off are we picking a genre to start with or just picking books???
