basically does your tbr grows faster than your reading rate? are you trying to reduce it? lets have an heated discussion on this topic!

message 2: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments WELL my TBR is definitely running away with me, and my kindle has made it even worse. I read fairly quickly, but nowhere near Bridette's lighning speed. I read 9-10 books a month at current speed, but if I include kindle and audoi books for the car, I probably have around 550 in total. I'm assuming the "intending to read but have not bought yet" books don't count.

BTW - I'd like to see Steve "fess-up", I'm pretty sure he beats my little list by a long way.

JackieB | 251 comments I refuse to count my TBR mountain, but I estimate it to be in the region of 650-700 books. That's the books that I actually have bought. Like Chris, I'm not counting the books I intend to get sometime, but haven't got yet. I am permanently trying to reduce it, because I am running out of space in my house.
I tried a cunning scheme to reduce it - get rid of 6 books buy one. Unfortunately, I "accidentally" went into a local charity shop and came out with two the other day. I don't feel too bad since I had read two off of my pile, so at least things are not getting worse. I've changed my scheme so that I can buy a book for every two I get rid of. It's going to take years to reduce my mountain this way, but at least i have some chance of sticking to that goal.

I second Chris' plea (demand?). 'Fess up Steve!

I worry about avalanches, especially as my cat likes to use the piles of books as stepping stones every now and then.

well i do not mean to boast or anything but my tbr pile is rather under control atm, but thats until i am let loose in a book shop or a charity shop. hehe but i soon get under control. :)

message 10: by JackieB (new)

JackieB | 251 comments Yeah, but you read about 1,000 books a week. Some of us can't get through them that fast, but we're really good at buying them.
I've decided that I need to read 2 off my TBR pile before I can buy one new book. I was doing really well until the weekend when I was fed up. I bought 3 and a friend sent me another two. So that's 10 book I need to read from my TBR pile before I can buy any more. Plus of course all the books I've borrowed from the library, but let's not talk about them.....

But mind you my tbr pile is actually increasing at the moment because of my coursework for my school subjects. So I haven't had much time to read. Lol.

message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris (calmgrove) What A-levels are you studying for?

message 13: by Bridgette (new)

I am studying photography, media and product design. Last year I did not get the grades to continue to Yr 13 so I have to repeat year 12.

message 14: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) My TBR pile is getting out of control. I don't think I'll ever get caught up but I keep seeing books listed on swap that I really want and I think if I don't get it now it may not be there later so the pile keeps growing.

message 15: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments My TBR is getting really out of control, I managed to slowly reduce the paperbacks over the last few months by 40ish down to 200ish, but the unread kindle books number 480, the amazon and audible wish list is excessive, and I'm hoarding library books too. I've got 10 out on my own membership card and a further 4 on the kids cards. Is there a 12step programme for bookworms?

message 16: by Stephen (last edited Sep 12, 2011 09:12AM) (new)

Stephen | 95 comments My TBR pile is coming down not bought any new books last week only swapped one book this week and got currently 4 library books on loan and further 5 on in transit lol and 13 others on reserved list also decided to put some of my read books either on RISI or onto bookmooch my unread pile of books I own is 700 at last count but that could reduce lol

message 17: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Steve, 700! It must be more than that - you're always at it (buying book I mean)

message 18: by Stephen (last edited Sep 12, 2011 09:58AM) (new)

Stephen | 95 comments no I have been good boy recently the last book I bought was the secret history and since work on house has started cut back book spending hence why joined library lol since joined library nearly 2 weeks ago read 4 books from there

Good luck for this year when you resit AS! Keep at it: our son did photography for GCSE, A level, Foundation at college, then at uni, despite not being very academic; then became a camera assistant and now is a grip (responsible for camera support) for TV shows like Casualty, Doctor Who, Merlin, Lark Rise to Candleford and so on. Even though some people see media studies and the rest as soft options, there may be more chance of you finding and enjoying a job that suits your interests than if you do, say, History or English.

I think tbr pile may increase by the end of next especially if my birthday on Saturday, with the books that I might get and the birthday money that I will spend and also the parents money as well. :) you got to spend some of the parents money. :)

message 23: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments My TBR pile is actually a TBR room - used to be our sons' bedroom, now contains 3 crammed bookcases and pile upon pile of my "treasures"!!Also several piles behind the settee downstairs and a small pile in the kitchen....and there are several more piles in our bedroom! Like Steve, I've tried to stop buying and have several books on loan from the library, but sometimes the temptation to buy is just too much :))

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine is very bad too but I try not to let it get to me or it takes away my pleasure in reading. Goodreads has made me feel very pressured before as I let it get to me and so I deleted my account and quit reading for awhile. Best not to think about it too much!

message 25: by Eric (new)

Eric (beefdurkee) | 122 comments I agree with Lady Alice. My table and bookshelf are overflowing, but I do enjoy reading. Also I try to make a trip to the charity shop to drop off the books I'm finished with. Overall I think that it is a good idea to have a tbr pile, it keeps me interested in reading :)

message 26: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments I'm not at all bothered by all the unread books in my home - they're very much a part of me and who I am. Sometimes, I spend time just sorting through them and trying to rationalise the piles! When I finish a book, I either pass it on to a family member, take it to the charity shop, or keep it if I've really enjoyed it.

message 27: by JackieB (new)

JackieB | 251 comments I was ambushed by the library at the weekend! They had a book sale. I thought it was the previous weekend when I was safely out of the county. Reader I bought two bagfuls.
I did get some real treasures though, including a copy of The Girl in a Swing by Richard Adams, which I've been wanting for ages.

I'm whizzing through books fairly quickly, but, like you, unfortunately adding to the TBR pile even more quickly -- The Hunger Games trilogy, Ursula Le Guin's Orsinian Tales and its sequel, a handful of classics and a couple of non-fiction alone appearing in the last week. Oh, and I forgot to mention a package of books by The Medieval Murderers which will keep me going weeks. Why do I do it?

message 33: by JackieB (last edited Mar 28, 2012 05:02AM) (new)

JackieB | 251 comments Unfortunately, my TBR pile has grown a little bit. I am still trying to bring it under control. I've noticed my reading speed is erratic at the moment though. Some books I expect to whizz through are taking ages. I wish I could say that others are taking very little time, but on the whole, that doesn't seem to be happening much, if at all. Most of the time, I don't notice my reading speed, or worry about it. I suppose it's because I want to reduce my TBR pile and I'm conscious that buying more books is not helping. I'm back on the no book-buying wagon again at the moment, but my local independent book shop is closing (sob!) and the closing down sale is emitting it's siren call....

Haha!! Recently had my sister-in-law to stay, so had to "tidy" the books up a bit. Actually found a few duplicates and several more that could be recycled - all the more space for new acquisitions. Off to Dunstable today with daughter, Anna, to trawl the charity shops:))

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments My TBR is doing quite well right now. I had a big clear out of books that I had "bought on a whim" at various sales, but know that I probably won't ever read. I've also cut down on buying books for my kindle and challenged myself to read 2 actual books from one of my many piles and then get them out of the house every month. I still have a huge way to go, but I'm impressed with myself.

Ice Bear (neilar) It is time for a spring clean round the house, no doubt I will rediscover books to be on my TBR pile, both first and second time around.

message 45: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) Since I count my virtual TBR along with my physical pile, it remains unwieldy and I don't expect it to ever get any smaller. I pile them on much faster than I can read.

message 46: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments Surprisingly, I didn't buy any books on my trip into Hitchin today, but picked up three more library books the other day, all of which I'd added to my TBR virtual, now real, pile. They are: The Lost Book of Salem by Katherine Howe ,
Untold Story. by Monica Ali by Monica Ali and A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr .
