Just curious - what would you pay?

First don't sell you work short! It is a bit high for a new author, but it is longer... If I wanted the book, for it's size, I would be ok with $18. Really it is not that much. If you are worried, look at other companies.

Ok so I have been racking my brain on what might help. Here are some of the possibilities I came up with.
1. depending on your printer, you might be able to change the size of the book, if a 600 page book was set as an trade paperback, you might be able to go a larger size. I know you would have to reformat it. Depending on the program you use that might not be bad.
2. do you need all of the index? I should say this comes from someone that almost never reads anything other then the book. just a thought.
3. I was guessing you would be self-publishing. If you are going to get the ISBN yourself, another idea may be to go directly through lightning press. I know most POD publishers do use them. Depending on your needs, this might be a good place.
I know it is not much, but I wanted to try to help. Best of luck!

Just curious here--why 146 pages of appendix for a novel?
Mari

Reformatting my book would be a bit of a headache at this point. Though I probably could do it. The main problem is the Appendix. The Appendix cross references entries within the book, and I'd much rather keep it to a single format in order to insure the appendix has the right page numbers for all printings of the book.
The Appendix isn't necessary, however, I've found many of the people who read my book get lost without it. I created the appendix mainly for myself, so I could make sure I don't leave any major loose ends, or forget about characters I use. I found though that those who've read my book really do use it out of curiosity if nothing else. A number of things which cannot be written in the novel without boring the reader (such as minor background information) are explained in the appendix for those who want more information. I have everything in here, political layout, dance of creation (a major part of the alien background), governmental structure, character listings (age sex etc...), minor technological information.
This is for regular soft back, however I will look into hard back. My pdf file is formatted for 5x7 but apparently that would be translated and printed onto anything ranging from 5x7 to 6x9.
If this local publisher falls through I'll be forced to use create space I think. I don't think lightning press does automatic ISBNs, but Create Space does.
anyway, thx for your help ^_^

You are right, Lightning source is actually a very large printer. They do not provide ISBN, but for self published authors it is another way. You can also use Lulu if you are looking for a no cost publishing company. I actually used them on my last book because they fit exactly what i wanted.
I wish you the best of luck, if you ever need anything drop us a line:)

(434 actual story content + 146 page Appendix/supplemental information. The rest is white space or what not)
It looks like the cheapest I can publish this book would be for $8.026 cost. Since bookstores like to take a minimum of 40% profit from the cover, I'd need to charge $18 in order to make $2 profit.
$18 seems a little steep to me, even if it is for a 600 page sci-fi novel.
Or am I overthinking it?
