Ebooks VS. Printed Books
Tanecia Tanecia Aug 06, 2011 10:54PM
i just wanted to get you guys feed back on which do you think is better the Ebooks or the all original printed books. the Advantages or Disadvantages of both

printed books!! there's nothing like the way books feel when you hold them. especially compared to ebooks/ereader.it's the weight, the sent of the paper etc...i just love my books!!! :D

Until they can make ebooks smell like real books then I won't settle for anything less that a physical book.

I have a Kindle and enjoy reading books on it because it is so convenient to carry around 127 books (and counting) in your hand.

There are very good reasons not to read books on the Kindle, however:
-new books are cheaper on the Kindle, but library books are free. Borrowing ebooks from libraries is not widely supported...yet.
-ebook authors and publishers often do a terrible job of translating the printed book's pictures and charts into an ebook format. I always come out wanting illustrations of the quality of the Kindle screensavers, and charts that are not pixelized graphics or microscopic.
-Free and inexpensive ebooks are also often of poor quality. For example, I am reading Edgar Allan Poe's Complete Poems on the Kindle, and the poems are formatted like prose, not into real stanzas. I've also seen lots of ebooks without proper chapter, index, or footnote links.
-Like others have said, sometimes it is just nice to have the tactile pleasure of holding the book, turning the pages, etc.

I love both. I continue to buy paper books if it's a book to a series I already have or if I love the author otherwise everything goes on my kidle.

I love my Kindle. It makes reading easier and more convenient. With it being easier and more convenient, I find that I read more than I would with printed. It's cheaper too. More easy to switch back and forth when I'm undecided on which book/genre to read. Also, it's a lot easier to just turn it off and not worry about bookmarks falling out of my book somehow when traveling or having to ruin pages by bending the corners. It saves trees and saves room in my cluttered house :0)

I do miss the smell of real books. I think with books I truly love, I will buy the hardcover and limit it that vs. buying every book I'm interested in via print. I've always wanted a library, but I just can't imagine the cost! But this seems like a nice compromise.

Oh as for the charging and reading a screen concerns - as long as the device is not back-lit, it shouldn't be a problem. I read approx. 8 hours per day, every day and it does not hurt my eyes. E-ink is literally like looking at a page from a book. You can buy a little reading light to shine on the e-reader at night if you'd like to read late at night in bed (like I do from midnight to sometimes 4 a.m.) No, that doesn't hurt my eyes either. As with charging, it's not constant charging. I charge about once every 3 weeks. But then again, my kindle is fairly new so we'll see in 2-3 years when the charge starts wearing down.

i love them both!!i've been using a nook n' it's true that u can read it wherever/wherever u are, that u can save money as u simply download the book...but i don't think that any of these can compare to the smell of a new book or the sense of making ur own bookmarks!:]

i love print books. holding it in my hands, turning the pages, browsing the book store. but e-books are so easy to buy on line just pick and click. my reader holds three hundred books! so i can have my whole collection with me all the time. i prefer the real books.

This is hard

Printed books all the way. There's nothing better than the awesome smell of a new book's pages turning. *-* *in heaven*

regular books just make life so much better. sure, a hardback can run 20 bucks, but compared to the whatever fee to buy online books and the multi-hundred dollars you have to spend to buy another ebook if something happens to it, it pales. I personally don't want to see the end of books, and with it libraries and bookstores (not to mention countless lives will be disrupted, to look at the economic side of things.)

I have to say that I like both of them I love books but I do find it much easier to carry my ereader on the public transport and I like reading books at home so I'm in for both of them ;-)

Ebooks, it's pretty handy especially when you are travelling. I like the fact that you can buy your copy through your device(kindle) and also so many books are a lot cheaper in ebooks.

Definitely printet books... especially the ones from a library or something... all crumbled and used.. then you have the real feeling of reading..:)

Printed books there is nothing like holding the book in your hand and snuggling up somewhere to read. I do read some ebooks on my phone but I find it not as comfortable as a real book. When they make electronics smell and make them more pliable i might reconsider.

Finally, I published my story for free as an ebook, and there's no way I could have done that in print.

Prinred books because i like to look at them when their on myshelf and it feels like a traditon;going to a book store and getting a cup of coffee while looking at what i got

Ebooks all the way now. Just being able to carry several hundred books around with me everywhere, and in my kindle that just fits in my pocket is amazing. I can't go anywhere without it

printed book im sorry but i need to hold it, smell it, check it out of the library! :)

e-books. surprisingly the economy made me make the purchase - with library hours decreasing and storage space at a premium in my house - I got an e-reader. i can and do borrow from the library, as well as purchase books, change my font and buy, borrow & read at my convenience. it saves on space and pages are always fresh. readers other than kindle have been supporting the libraries for quite some time.

I totally love my Kindle, it's one of my favorite gadgets so far. but there's no replacement to printed books. I'll always try to buy my favorite books and Special editions of them in printed form. Sometimes the price difference is so minimal that I'll buy the printed version anyway. I just love books, and take pride in knowing my decoration, it's a creative way of having a conversation topic when I have visitors. The ebook is so versatile and mobile and that's beautiful in its own right, besides saving some trees.

Printed books definitely. but ebooks are just so convenient :(

I prefer real books ! ready the actual thing doesn't make me feel so.. modern day kid? i love the smell and the amazing feel when you flip the last page.

I like them both i love the feel of reading a book but not all novels are in book form now so an ebook would be hand and also books take up sooooo much space.

I've always been a printed book purist but started eReading on my iPhone and then got a Kindle. I read up to 10 books a months and it really piles up. If I started a series that was paper, I'll continue to buy the hard cover until the series is over.

I must say though...I still grieve the loss of paper and ink.

Printed books! I love the way they smell, I always have a book with me, doesn't matter if I'm at college, home, friend's house you never know when you can get time to read and the smell of the pages is just awesome!! I've read ebooks I don't deny it, yes it's more comfortable to carry them cause you can read in your phone but there's nothing like the pleasure of having the book in your hands

i love my ebook but i steal need my print books

I love having the actual books! There's just something about the feel of anticipation to actually flip to the next page to see what happens and the smell of a books pages omgosh! there's just something so comforting and pleasing about it, but as for like ebooks/reader, kindles, etc. I see a plus with them if your traveling and such. But that's just how I feel personally.

i like the printed books cuz I kinda like to feel the book in my hands, but the disadvantages are that if u get to much books, u re gonna to give some away, cuz u need a larger space to store em.
the good thing about the ebooks re that they re cheaper, and u just need a memory card to store them.
the bad thing is that when u read at a ereader is not that good for ur eyes, and u need to charge it, what means it can shut down in the middle of ur reading,
but what u guys think?

I have a Kindle and it lasts for about 15 books before needing charging. It also gives plenty of warning when the battery starts getting low. I've never, ever had it shut down on me whilst reading.

Also, it is an e-ink screen, which is the same on a lot of Sony readers and some others. Basically e-ink is just like reading a book, not even remotely like a computer screen and is not bad for your eyes at all.

it's also very light which makes reading comfortable, is easy to fit in my handbag and if I am reading a book on the bus that I'm not really getting into I can switch books easily without carrying several around with me. They are brilliant for holidays, no more cases full of heavy books!

I wasn't sure about ebooks either at first but now I love them, and when I read a book I really like in ebook format I buy the paperback or hardback to put on my bookshelf as well. That way, I don't waste my money on "real" books that turn out to be rubbish!

You can also get free books. Who wouldn't want free books?

I live in on an island in the Caribbean and it is very hard, almost impossible to find the books i want to read. Even though i really like to read regular books, Ebooks are so much more easily accessible and takes up much less space in my home

Printed books! Technology is good, but nothing can compare the feeling of holding a new book in your hands.

I feel like having an actual book in ur hand is better. With ebooks u have to make sure ur device is charged. If I was on a deserted island I woudnt be able to do that. But ebooks are easier to store.

i do really prefer both...i bring with me a printed one once i go out since it's also hard to read some ebooks while travelling...both are great!:)

I love the smell of books. I'm odd, I know. But at the same time, I hate breaking their bindings, and having to put in a bookmark everytime I have to put the book down (sucks pretty bad when you fall asleep reading and lose your place >_<) and I don't have a huge bookshelf.. so it's overflowing.

I wasn't sure if I'd like my Kindle before I got it.. but I'm in love with it. No really. :( I can sit in bed and read with it plugged in so I know it's always charged for when I go out, or if I feel like sitting at my comp instead I can just sync it up to my Kindle for PC and read from there. Super convenient. Love it! :)

I prefer Ebooks because I can put it on my phone and it's compact and portable and you can even read in the dark because it has lighting.

Printed, i love being able to take printed books anywhere.

I don't actually have any ebook reader but I might be getting one. Personally I love the real books and I wouldn't be able to go without. The reason I would consider an ebook reader is simply for trips. Usually when I go somewhere I pack a bag of books. How convenient it would be to not lug those around.

I love both. I like having the acual book in my hand, but most ebooks are cheaper than printed books. I have Kindle and really like it, but miss when had to manually flip the page or even making my own bookmarks..

And also, I couldn't get books delivered to where I am now, and books in english are super expensive

of course printed books! cause printed books are already translated to bahasa indonesia but that's not the point.printed books come with covers and paper pages.and every book has it's own smell,do you realize it? have you always try to smell a book? i do.and i like thick book,i just like it.in ebook how many pages the book is,it wouldn't be thick!(of course).printed books,we can have it in our hands,we can put in on the shelf,we can give it to our friends,if they wanna borrow it,and if someday you want to throw your books away, you can sell it on ebay or if you don't wanna have it anymore, you can save it on your shelf and someday you will give it to your children!!
printed books win!

I have to say both, I don't have an e-reader yet but download alot of PDF's which I love to read whilst on lunch at work so much easier to read online whilst eating that trying to turn the pages of a book......however I love books, the feel of them, the smell of them (yes I am one of those people who can get lost in the local library for hours):)

I have a Kindle, and love it, but only use it if I can't find a book I want to read. I love the noise of a hardcover library book's plastic cover (when you crinkle it) for some reason. I know, thats really weird =)
Overall, I would say that I like printed books better, even if they arent from the library.

PRINT FOR LIFE, hahaha, i just love the sensation when i flipped the pages of my books :D

the whole vampire academy series i read it on my phone with ebooks!Since then i read everything on my mobile phone because it's easier to carry and you don't need to have the actual book with you and i also like the fact that i can read at night without lights when i go to bed!(i now read pretties in printed book and after 22 ebboks i read this year i feel it difficult to read it because i have to carry it around with me in order to read it and i also can't read at night...So i prefer ebooks!!!:)

normal book because there is nothing like the smell of a new book

I prefer regular books hands down. Always will win for me, but I am not opposed to ebooks. I think that ebooks make things like travelling a whole lot easier. Probably the only reason I would get one is for a reason like that. I can't really carry 4 or 5 books around with me all the time.

Real books - I love the feel of having a book in my hand, and I love the smell of new books and I also love looking at the covers in colour. The only problem is hardbacks tend to get heavy and are awkward to handle if you are lying down. Paperbacks are also quite easy to damage and the spines sometimes become creased easily especially books published by Mira >.> <.<

Ebooks - I love that I save on storage space, its faster to buy an ebook than a physical book, it also makes traveling with more than one book easier. And with my kindle if I accidentally turn it off it doesn't lose my page even if I didn't bookmark it. If you accidentally close your book before bookmarking it, it won't be impossible to find the page but it'll take a bit longer to find your spot.

However if you finish a book or just want to reference back to a scene it would be much easier to flip through a book because by looking at it you can remember the general area of the place your looking for. With ebooks unless you marked that spot before hand it would be really hard to find it but then again you can actually search the book.

With physical books you can also return them, lend them to friends and resell them. With ebooks you can lend them but you're friend would have to have an ereader device or software on their PC/phone/tablet and they might not actually like reading ebooks too so that's another thing to think about. I mean you can lend them your ereader but that's not really something I'd feel comfortable with.

Also not all publishers allow all of their ebooks to be available in every country (I'm in the Cayman Islands) which can be frustrating at times. I don't understand why they do this, because if the physical book can be bought in my country why can't the digital copy? And even if its not sold here I can always go on a site like Book Depository that does international shipping and just get the physical book. I guess its a need for the law to catch up with technology but they need to speed that process up.

I have a nook and absolutely love it. I also love printed books.

If I have started a series in paperback I continue it that way. It also helps me when I've lenses someone my paperbacks they get to finish them that way as well.

As for new series I start them on my nook. It's easier that way and sometimes they are just cheaper to to buy them as an ebooks. Also sometimes some writers only have ebooks and have never had the paperback published.

So I love both!

ebooks are just soooo much more preactical. I've changed countries 3 times in 10 years. I left books behind, before I had a kindle.
