It does? Doesn't seem all that big to me.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 182 comments Compared to a lot of other books it does.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Umm... OK. O_o

No. Not going there."

I wasn't trying to be naughty. O_o But I'll take credit for it all the same.

So started the first Wild Cards.

It's...different.

message 107: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Started Dune a few days ago which I'm quite excited about. Haven't got that far with it yet but enjoying it so far!

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 903 comments I love Dune. I read it again last year.

I just finished The Magician King last night and I'll be starting on The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell today.

How was MKing?

message 110: by Jax (new)

Jax (anti-cato) I'm reading BoneShaker right now. I'm not a huge..like..shambling zombie fan but I decided to give it a go anyway, i'm only 50 pages in and its aight. I'm more interested in the 'steam punk' label that's been attached to it, I feel like I want to like that genre so much, but its probably won't.

I'm also kinda reading Mistborn..but I keep putting it down to read other books...I think that says a lot for it.

message 111: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I absolutely LOVED the Mistborn books. It took me a couple false-starts to get into the story, but I chalked that up to bad timing. Once I really got going, I was really hooked.

Right now, I'm working on an audio of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the last 200ish pages of Perdido Street Station. I hope to have both finished by or on the first of the month.

So i should keep going with Mistborn?

I could NOT get into Perdido Street Station, no matter how much I loved Kraken & The City and The City

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 903 comments I got halfway through PSS and stopped.

Funny thing: I got halfway through Boneshaker and stopped.

I dont know if i'll be able to finish BoneShaker, honestly. I dont like to waste time on books that don't draw me in.

message 115: by Chris , The Kingslayer (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 903 comments Agreed. Boring zombies. If they chased me, I don't even think I'd run.

message 116: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Perdido is... different. That's for sure. I feel like I've been reading it for ages, but I'm finally getting somewhere now. I don't feel like I started to really get it until past the 1/2way point. And still it's... out there.

However, I saw an interview vid with Mieville regarding City, and that made me really interested in reading that one. So that will be my next book of his. Not sure when I'll get to that, I suppose it depends on how PSS ends and whether I angrily throw the book at the wall or not. :P

Regarding Mistborn, I loved it, but I can see why others wouldn't, and that will depend on your reading style and expectations. It's not as gritty as ASOIAF is, and it's definitely more fantasy, and thus it feels a little "ligher", in a way. But it's hard to really categorize for me. If you're not enjoying it and it hasn't hooked you, then you probably wouldn't like the trilogy, and the story really comes together in the 3rd book.

message 117: by Jax (new)

Jax (anti-cato) I haven't even met a zombie yet. Zeke has just gone to the city. I'm sadly reading 3-4 books right now and none of them leave me wanting more.

these are sad days.

message 118: by Chris , The Kingslayer (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 903 comments I thought the first Mistborn had kind of an Italian Job plot set in Mordor thing going for it.

message 119: by Chris , The Kingslayer (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 903 comments With X-Men as the main characters.

message 120: by Jax (new)

Jax (anti-cato) I'm finding it very mediocre. i think i'm jaded cuz i've read so much fantasy :\

That could be... I haven't read very much, at least comparatively with Fantasy Readers.

After a while, like any genre, you get super sick of people with secret magicalness, wizards, special childrens and all that jazz. I think it's much harder now to do fantasy to finding a good series is such a huge score. It's probably also why GRRM has such an incredible following, he breaks all these stupid fantasy tropes that we're so sick of anyway, at least, that's why I love him.

message 123: by Becky (last edited Sep 29, 2011 12:28PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) OK... So, I finished Perdido yesterday... and it was goodish, but had a lot of potential to be great. It just lacked focus. Shame.

Didja figure out what you want to read, Jax?

message 124: by Jax (new)

Jax (anti-cato) Nope. so i'll continue to read all of them and be unsatisfied.

message 125: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 58 comments I am going through Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of Fallen. All ten books are written and GRRM recommended them on his website. Like GRRM Erikson has lots of characters, a lot more middling from gods and demi-gods. Lots of magic, but very gritty. Strong women characters. It took me a while to get into Bk 1 "Garden of the Moons" but I am glad I stuck with it.

message 126: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) I'm re-reading Mistborn: The Final Empire.

Tony | 10 comments Right now I'm reading Doctor Who: Harvest of Time by Alastair Reynolds. I dont have much experiance with the Third Dr but so far am loving the book. It makes me want to check out the older Dr Who and more from Alastair Reynolds. After that I'm going to read Cold Days by Jim Butcher.

message 129: by Joan (new)

Joan (joanofsnark) Currently, I'm reading "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" by Rezan Aslam. Excellent reading so far.

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 58 comments There was alot of readers who recommended Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller series & they were right. Just finished Bk 1 Name of the wind and it was very entertaining.

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 81 comments I just read a new release by Geoffrey Gudgion called Saxon's Bane. It's set in a rural part of the modern English countryside, and winters there are only a few months long, but I loved it. Really engaging and full of ancient lore, too.
