Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The books don't go onto your pc when you archive them.

Hmmmm. Hopefully I can explain in a coherent manner.

Find the delete from device function on your kindle. On mine it's found by left clicking the 5-way controller when a title is underlined.

That sends it to archive which is a sort of collection. On mine the archive is found at the very end of all the pages of books. Click on that and you'll see all book titles in the archive. Move to the book you want, left click the 5-way and it loads onto the kindle as long as the 3G or wireless is on. If it's off it asks if you want to turn it on.

I hope that made sense...

message 103: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 10 comments So - all books must go on to the Kindle first before they can be archived?

message 104: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No. If you send them to kindle for pc when you one click them, they also appear in the archive on your kindle. Provided you've had wifi or 3G on, of course.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Pretty much the easiest way to think of it is when you buy a book it goes into the Amazon cloud in your own little spot called 'DubaiReaderKindle' (or whatever it's called)

All your books can be viewed in the cloud via the archive. If you send it to your computer, although it's technically on there, without actually downloading it to your computer via the manage your kindle bit, it won't be suitable for moving.

If you go into manage my kindle on your amazon account, there is an option to download onto the computer so you can transfer via the USB cable. This needs to be done as downloading it to the Kindle for pc, doesn't download the full book - just the icon for the cloud really.

Does that make sense?

DubaiReader | 10 comments I'm going to bed in a mo as it's 5am!
But I just went and got my Kindle.
Turned it on and then went into Archived items - and found all the downloaded books that had been missing. They had archived themselves! Now, does that mean that happened because I've run out of space or I pressed something wrongly (easy to do with the touch if you touch the screen accidentally!)

message 107: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 10 comments But also I then took a look at the menu for 'Archived items' and found 'Import collections', which said " the following devices are registered to your account. Select the device that has the connections you want to import to this Kindle. Be sure to transfer the content first, then transfer the collections"
What does "Be sure to transfer the content first" mean?
I told it to go ahead - and now the book I wanted to review has disappeared from my Kindle - where it was greyed out AND my PC!!

I'm going to bed, more brain strain tomorrow!
Thanks for your help :)

I'm looking for a Kindle Touch to buy. However, I need to know the SAR or Radiation level of it. Can anyone of you tell me what it is? Thanks so much!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Out of my area but found this in the user guide :

Your Device is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure
to RF energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the United States (FCC).
Information on your Device is on file with the FCC and can be found under the Display Grant
section of http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/ea/ after searching on the FCC ID for your Device,
which can be found on the back of the Device.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Frege, I've had a google and couldn't find anything help, sorry.

I think it might be best if you ask amazon directly. Just click the 'help' on the top right of any amazon page and it tells you various ways of contacting them. Amazon customer support is brilliant.

Can I be nosy and ask why it's a concern?

message 111: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I don't know what it is but I can tell it is safe to work with my part robotic friend.

She needs to ask for everything in fear it'll mess with her electronics and she'll keel over and die.

message 113: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Nope! It messes with the signal or something so she has a special pass to by-pass them!

Anything magnetic is also quite dangerous for her!

Ray Daley | 20 comments "Is it better to turn it off or put it to sleep?
The Kindle is designed to go to sleep, thereby using less battery power."

Completely untrue & way to parrot Amazon's hype.
I proved this was untrue when I got my Kindle back in April of 2011. I personally tested the claim.

After a full charge, used in sleep mode. 30 days reading.

After a full charge, turning off when not used. 33 days reading.

Don't just blindly believe something because Amazon claims its true.

The amount of titles on the Kindle will effect battery life (as it indexes them all every time it's switched on). Load no more than about 600-800 titles (even short ones) on the device.

Otherwise your battery will flatten VERY quickly.
The Kindle may have 3 gig of memory but if you used it all on books the device would probably go flat just indexing all the titles on it.

message 116: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I have to disagree on that Raymond. I have tested it too and it lasted FAR longer in sleep mode.

Also if you don't turn if off, then it won't index it and won't drain the battery.

message 117: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Sep 22, 2012 10:13AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Interesting Raymond. Eink doesn't use power to maintain a page as far as I understand but like any device, standby is not the same as off.

When the kindle first came out I got into a pointless amazon punch up about solid state memory and access times. A full kindle is slower than an empty one and will use more power due to indexing.

message 118: by Alsjem (new)

Alsjem | 18 comments Hi, I don't know if anyone can help but my kindle has developed a harmless but irritating habit.

On my home page the first book on the list would be the most recently read but since last week it now puts the books at the end of the list. I know this isn't a huge problem but because I usually dip in and out of 2 or 3 books at a time its a little annoying paging through to get to the end.

Can anyone think why this suddenly happened and if I can change it back?

message 119: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Hi Alsjem,

Same thing happens to mine every so often. Normally mine goes away when I update it via wifi or a simple reset (holding the on/off button if you have a KK for a few seconds does the job or via the settings menu) will fix it.

It's bloody annoying isn't it?!

message 120: by Alsjem (new)

Alsjem | 18 comments Ha Ha! Thank-you, I thought I might be being a bit anal moaning about it.
I should have tried a reset - the universal solution to every technical problem!

Kath | 1233 comments hey alsjem is your time set right - i had that problem and it was cos my kindle has lost the time setting...

Just wondered if anyone knew?
Thanks :)

message 124: by Alsjem (new)

Alsjem | 18 comments Hi thanks for the suggestions but so far reset and setting the time haven't helped. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

My husband says 'has there been an OS update?' but he has neglected to explain to me what that means.

like i said above, mine generally goes away on it's own. how long has it been like that?

no you do not pay for 3G

the only payable thing for the content or i think maybe sending something over 3G like a document via email. there is a small charge for that..

you can subscribe to magazines and newspapers and it costs for that but it doesn't cost to send it, just your own documents

er.. sorry RJ that you didn't realise this before but you can't. Some books have both (the page numbers show up if you hit menu) but if the uploader doesn't add them, then tough.

It had been about a fortnight but I had forgotten that due to a new router it hadn't been able to connect to wifi. I have now downloaded the new firmware and its working perfectly. Thanks for all your help.

message 132: by Guy (new)

Guy (guyol) | 7 comments Hi everyone - I'm sure this has been answered somewhere, so I apologise if it's a stupid question.

Why can't you do a word count on a Kindle?

I know that you can occasionally get a page count if a paperback/hardback copy exists, but why on earth wouldn't Amazon include a feature as simple as a word count, when you have something like Xray?

For me, word count is the most effective way of telling a books length, rather than having to count the ........ system Kindle uses.

Surely something so simple as this should exist? Have I just missed it? Why on earth would anyone want the frankly weird 'location' system instead?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Ah... now the frankly wierd location system is something I do know about. Pages don't make sense on a kindle as the font size can change. The only way to send someone to a specific place in a book is by using location.

As for word count - I dont't know, but why would you want to know the word count particularly?

Of course you could run your kindle book through Calibre, put it into rtf format and let Microsoft Word do the count. Of course you might need to remove the DRM but that is quite another matter :)

message 134: by Guy (new)

Guy (guyol) | 7 comments Thanks Simon.

I'm familiar with the location system and what it is for, but only after searching for info on it and it isn't particularly intuitive.

As I mentioned before, the reason why I would want word count is to estimate book size.

Pages in a book is not a good guide, as the Kindle page system only goes on how many there were in the original hard/softback. As you said, pages on a kindle don't make sense as font size can change. Font size in books can be different too, along with format, spacing and any other editorial factor. This means that the only way to accurately measure the length of a book is in word count (or character).

Running my kindle through calibre is an option I've thought of, but again, for such a simple thing as a word count, I'm surprised it doesn't exist.

I write myself and like to be able to look at word count for comparison when reading genre, or alternatively to see chapter size for pacing. I can't imagine I'm the only person who would like to see this.

Do you not find it strange, or does having a word count function seem redundant to you?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I can't say I am too bothered with a word count. I never had one on real books. I know real books have a thickness but the kindle does have the progress bar.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Oh, and the dots under the title give a relative size to all your books.

message 137: by Jud (last edited Jul 04, 2013 06:27AM) (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I wouldn't have a clue at how to guess how long a book was by word count unless it was like 5000 (short) words or 100,000 (long).

Authors are probably more aware of the word count than readers so maybe that is why it isn't provided? Amazon is advertising books to readers not to authors (although of course authors are readers too)

message 138: by Guy (new)

Guy (guyol) | 7 comments Simon - indeed, as I mentioned before it has the .....but that's not a very accurate indicator. Indeed books never had them, but seeing as we've upgraded technology, it's nice to have little extras.

Jud - It is standard practice for writing awards to be judged in categories by word count as here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_cou... and it is also the simplest way of knowing the genuine length of a book.

Research has shown that eReader owners are much more likely to read a larger number of books. It has also shown that readership profiles tend to be more highly academic in nature, pointing towards the target market having a higher literary slant.

Surely with this in mind and the fact that eReaders are responsible for a massive boom in self publishing, a thing as simple as a word count function would be common sense?

Without throwing my toys out the pram, but who even uses XRay - really?

I absolutely love my Kindle, but am amazed that this isn't a standard feature.

Hopefully some lovely person at Amazon will be able to spend a small amount of the money they didn't pay in taxes to do an update at some point.

message 139: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments id love a word count feature but only if it showed the word count of the book and the word count if the extra rubbish that some authors tack on separately

message 140: by Guy (new)

Guy (guyol) | 7 comments Me too Patti. Xray is so thorough in it's search functions (which I honestly can't believe many people use) that a simple search function to be able to check word count by chapter, or book minus indices.

This drives me crazy too. Word count is not perfect, but it is so much more accurate than page counts. But when I introduced the subject on another thread, everyone told me that they could not switch. Even though I never suggested replacing page numbers, but just including it!

It means adding another field to the database, which is expensive, but so are all the other changes. And it may not be available for all works - but in that case could simply state, "Not Available" and leave it at that.

I consider it honesty in advertising. Perhaps it's too honest for some?

message 142: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm used to the percentage left bar on my baby kindle now. Can't say I've ever looked for page count. I *think* there's some way I finding page numbers? Have never been bothered to look, really.

I'd quite like knowing the word count before starting a book. One of the benefits of being in our group is that we can ask our authors for the word count before we start one of their books.

I do get a good idea of the length of a book from the percentage bar but often there's a load of extra crap at the end of a book.

Word count would help with avoiding books like that.

Finally. Thank you Victoria. Whenever I mention word count on here, people treat me like I'm completely crazy.

It's incredible - Word count is the yardstick used for measuring all academic works, it's the yardstick for writing competitions and also submissions to most publishing houses. Why on earth people should find it so strange that a Kindle user might want to know how many words a work is I have no idea.

The most important thing being that it really wouldn't be that hard to add. It really wouldn't.

message 144: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I just don't think in word count, I have no idea how 'big' a 20,000 word book would be, or how many pages that would relate to. But I can understand how it might be more useful to someone else.

It's nice when the kindle has the page total as well cause you can see you are x% through the book but that relates to page 123 out of 456

message 145: by Guy (new)

Guy (guyol) | 7 comments Indeed Jud. Not everyone thinks in word count, but most people who have written an essay or thesis for further education usually does (that may included yourself as the exception) and certainly anyone who writes professionally, whether that be as a journalist, author, publicist or PR agent also most certainly does. I'd say that people in these types of career would be largely the target demographic of Amazon Kindle.

The problem with page count is that it regularly includes publisher info pages, contents pages, foreword and extensive follow up notes.

It's not even that a page count is a problem for me. That is a feature I would expect on a Kindle as a bare bones basic. As is a word count. It just makes absolutely no sense. I mean - does anyone even use Xray?

message 146: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3401 comments So, I've spent most of the afternoon on the phone to Amazon and the end result is, they've decided that my Kindle is a lost cause and they're sending me a new one! Now here comes the dumb question. When my existing Kindle decided to play silly devils, Amazon got me to deregister and reregister it. The outcome of this was that all the books I have read and am reading, vanished off the device. Will these reappear when I get the new one or is there something complex I will have to do to achieve this? Help!!
