Carolyn F. I finished Dreadnought (The Clockwork Century, #2) by Cherie Priest and as I was listening to this book I was thinking, "Oooh, that's the guy she ends up with, oh wait nope." Then, "No, I was wrong, this is the guy she ends up with." Nope, this is not a romance book at all unlike the first one and I didn't mind. I loved, loved, loved the ending. Can't wait to see what happens to them next!

Julia | 615 comments William, maybe some short stories and novellas you've been meaning to catch up with, for me that'd be Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, Unexpected Stories by Octavia E. Butler or 1959 Short Stories: -all You Zombies-, Flowers for Algernon, the Vane Sisters, Transfusion, Obituary, Anniversary, which has the wonderful short story "Flowers for Algernon."

Carol, how is it? Have you read anything else by her? I'm trying to decide which series to start with of hers.

message 2758: by Carol (new)

Carol The book was good as for which of the series I like best by Cassandra Clare it would be the mortal instruments series HOWEVER that being said There's a sequence to each series and each series crosses over characters so of ur in it for the Long haul then read the series as following first read infernal devices series then move on up to the mortal instruments series and then follow up with dark artifices which is still in progress I don't know how many books in dark artifices there will be but after finishing lady midnight i was left with the impression there would be more on the way.

Currently Reading:

Julia | 615 comments I recently finished Rumble by Ellen Hopkins.

I'm currently reading Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama for my RL book club.

message 2764: by John (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments I'm reading The 14th Colony. While it's not typical urban fantasy, Steve Berry is quite a good author and I can see how some of his concepts could be enhanced with a more fantastical approach.

I love reading thrillers because they keep me inspired and excited and I love Dresden stuff and that genre because magic is not so far from science.

Just think about Back to the Future when Michael was playing Jimmy Hendrix music in the fifties. It would have seemed like magic to those people...especially the Doc's car!

message 2765: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brookeluvsbooks) Im reading/listening to Calamity (Reckoners, #3) by Brandon Sanderson and so far it is as good as the first 2 books Mr. Sanderson always delivers :)

message 2766: by John (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments Just finishing the 14th Colony. Not liking it quite as much as usual. It seems a bit slower paced than usual or something. I can't quite put my finger on it. Usually Mister Berry's stuff really zings along and has lots of cool information. Maybe I'm just not that interested in the historical aspect of the novel. I can't say.

Still worth a read though.

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments I'm reading The Traveler now byThe Traveler

I love his prose. It is always very interesting. Not as fast a read as a Cussler, or Jim Butcher, or Andre Norton's old Witch World series, but always imaginative and thoughtful.

His characters are always fun to root for; and you always get plenty of opportunities to be doing that!

message 2768: by John (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments Just finished reading Nightsiders the Orphan Army by Jonathan Maberry.

His reads are like Cussler's. Fast and furious. Love them all to death.

Give this one, a YA series, a five stars. The Orphan Army

message 2769: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd In a hugely unjust move, I finished The Name of the Wind and then picked up Dead Until Dark. Poor Dead Until Dark is a totally different tone and end goal than The Name of the Wind, and it is proving difficult to judge it on its own merits. I am being a bad book parent right now.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) Stayed up till almost 3am finishing In the Skin of a Monster by Kathryn Barker . What a great book!! unsure what I'll be rating the book somewhere around 4-5 stars I imagine.

message 2773: by John (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments Reading The Traveler by David Golemon.

It's gotten much more interesting as it develops. Time travel in the Nazi times combined with psychic phenomena and a touch of fantasy which is nicely blended.

Loving it.

Just biting my nails until the new Dresden book comes out from Jim Butcher. Gotta be the best urban fantasy stuff I've ever read. Though there's lots of great stuff out there.

message 2774: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brookeluvsbooks) A Trail Through Time (The Chronicles of St. Mary's #4) by Jodi Taylor I'm almost done with this one and already have the next one downloaded and ready for me to start :)

message 2775: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) only a few pages into The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1) by Chloe Neill so not much of an opinion so far, like most of what I've read, except a bit iffy on the MC, she doesnt seem super bright.

listening to Rot & Ruin (Rot & Ruin, #1) by Jonathan Maberry took a little bit to get into it but I'm really warming up to them now.

listening to [bookcove..."

I thought this series from Neill was mediocre at best. I do plan on checking out the second book when it's released, but it will be a make or break book in the series for me and I plan on getting it from the library. That way the only thing I out of is my time.

Susan (ofearna) | 18 comments listening to [bookcove..."

I've read Rot & Ruin (and the other novels, the shorts/collection and the graphic) ... how does the audio compare, I wonder?

message 2778: by John (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments I'm only a few chapters from finishing the Traveler by David Golemon. I hate putting it down, even to write, but...

It's a thoughtful mix of politics, Nazi hatred, time travel, love and friendship. About surviving the odds and coming out on top, even when you lose.

I can see what you mean. Personally I really enjoy the setting - the whole New Orleans vibe, the para prison, the corrupt system thats mean to be keepin everything in check - some of the powers, the old lady is interesting - but otherwise there's not much separating this book from a lot of other UF. I feel very meh about the characters, they're not bad but they're also not spectacular. An the two MCs keep drooling all over one another, not sure how they get anything done. lol.

message 2780: by John (last edited Aug 01, 2016 01:50PM) (new)

John Pirillo (johnpirillo) | 60 comments If you haven't seen it yet, check out the new Netflix series, Stranger Things. Speilberg and King produced it.

It's a great sci-fi, fantasy blend which pits several families against a group of scientists using wrongful technology on innocent people and several families who lose their children as a result of some kind of occult creature that has been loosed.

Othewise, I am just several chapters from leaping into my next book, which I'm hoping to be one of the Simon Green ones from his series, of which I've read about a half dozen. I love his blend of science fiction elements with totally off the wall occult and fantasy stuff like dead gods, demons, vampires, and so forth. The Nightside Series and his other...the Drood series.

Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green
