And I still have the Alex Verus series to read to tide me over. I hope to start Fated (Alex Verus, #1) by Benedict Jacka this month.

Julia | 615 comments I finished Things Not Seen (Things, #1) by Andrew Clements and The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester which are middle grade books, but to me had stupid premises. Today I finished Doctor Who Peacemaker by James Swallow which is a pleasant Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)and Martha in the Wild West.

Have started the ARC A Death-Struck Year by Makiia Lucier .

I'll be curious to hear what you think of Beautiful Disaster. I tried to read it, but just couldn't get into it. Right now, I'm reading Blood Bound (Unbound, #1) by Rachel Vincent

Christine | 752 comments I finally finished Uncertain Allies (Connor Grey, #5) by Mark Del Franco and have moved on to Undone Deeds (Connor Grey, #6) by Mark Del Franco so I can cross another series off of my list. It's a good enough series, but it just doesn't have that keep me on the edge of my seat quality that keeps me awake and reading. Instead, I find myself falling asleep after about 15 pages, even though I am interested in the story.

Christine | 752 comments Has anyone else read Undone Deeds (Connor Grey, #6) by Mark Del Franco and could you explain to me what just happened? I was with him up until about the last thirty pages, and then he lost me. Maybe I'm just being dense this week, but I feel like I missed something. I feel very unsatisfied right now.

I think I might start Fated (Alex Verus, #1) by Benedict Jacka next.

I know right! I hated the ending. I read somewhere on a message board that the author was going for a king Arthur kind of retelling and he has gone to that island to heal and be reborn sometime or something like that. I loved the series and then that ending just sucked for me lol.

I'm glad it wasn't just me. And I didn't quite get what happened to Boston and everyone there. Does life just go on like before? Was anything changed? And that bit with Maeve at the end (view spoiler)

message 2467: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I'm reading Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs and can I say how much I detest plot lines where old lovers or ex-spouses reenter the scene and try to manipulate everyone and undermine the new love? The only saving grace is that I like how maturely Mercy is handling the situation.

These Violent Delights (Robin) I'm currently reading NOBODY by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and EON by Allison Goodman

So I can memorize my lines, I'm going to cut way back on my reading. I plan on reading The Goldfinch The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt at bedtime, only.

I think so. It's been over two years since book 6 came out and I haven't heard anything about another book. And it felt like the final book with the way it wrapped up most of the threads of the series.

I love the Eileen Wilks series. The interactions between Lily and Rule make the series for me and I adore Lily's grandmother.

Christine | 752 comments I've started Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells , because I will finally finish this series this year. As "assassins" go I prefer Gin Blanco to Sabina, but I love Sabina's supporting cast of characters.

On audio, I'm giving The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter a try.

Leiah Cooper (leiahingolden) | 332 comments I am nearing the end of The Man With the Golden Torc (Secret Histories, #1) by Simon R. Green . At first I thought it might wind up being just John Taylor in another iteration, but as I have gotten into it Eddie Drood has his own persona, though some of the characters made me say in my head, "Oh, yes, this is so-and-so character from the Nightside." Start here if you haven't tried the John Taylor stories: Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green

Ah well, it is still a lot of fun, excitement, magic, and mystery, with an evil grandmother, an obsessive and a family obsessed, xenophobic clan. Overall? If you love Dresden or Nightside, I will be recommending it in my review...

message 2479: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk With my new work schedule, my reading has really suffered. I just finished The Handmaid's Tale The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and plan on starting a re-read of This Side of the Grave This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress, #5) by Jeaniene Frost .

message 2480: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments After listening to The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter I realized I am clearly not in THAT much of a PNR mood, so I'm going to check out this change of format in Ex-Purgatory (Ex-Heroes, #4) by Peter Clines and see how I like it compared to the first three in the series.

And I'm almost done with Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells and I am really glad there is only one more book left to go in this series.

message 2481: by Mark (new)

Mark | 71 comments London Falling by Paul Cornell this is really good.

message 2482: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I finished Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells and I have to say I am really not a fan of Sabina. But with only one more book in the series, I just know I'll have to finish it.

Ex-Purgatory (Ex-Heroes, #4) by Peter Clines was pretty good. I liked the change in tactic he took with how the story unfolded, but it just wasn't as interesting as the last two were for me.

Now I've been reading/listening to some PNR. Loving Immortals After DArk series by Kresley Cole and slowly getting into Lords of the Underword by Gena Showalter. So far, I hands down prefer IAD. But both are worlds above my current listen Baehrly Breathing (Goldie Locke and the Were Bears, #1) by Elizabeth A. Reeves which is almost painful at times. What was I thinking? She works for three were-bears and her name is Goldie Locke. Really?

I love that series as well. And the audiobooks narrated by Robert Petkoff are incredible.

message 2491: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I finished listening to Redshirts by John Scalzi . Yeah, it's not exactly a new idea and honestly I don't care all that much for his writing style, but the book was just fun. Pure geeky entertainment.

Also finished Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard and I have really mixed feelings about this one. There were some things in it that I really loved and some other things that made me roll my eyes. I think it's the author's first book (maybe?) so I'm looking forward to seeing how her writing evolves as the series continues.

I'm finally in the mood for Kitty again, so next up in print is Alien in the House (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #7) by Gini Koch

I thought it was a good book as well. The world building wasn't my favorite, but it was very unique. What I liked was the main character and the tone of the novel.

I got a book, it was a book of short stories and involved two short stories that I bought from Science Fiction Book Club and forty pages from the beginning were repeated in the middle. I contacted SFBC and they sent me another copy.

I just finished yesterday The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson , I'm also reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt , today I finished The World Outside by Eva Wiseman , it was okay, but Chaim Potok wrote about similar people, better.

thalassic I think you had me at 'archeological thriller' since that's what I studied in school ... well, not the thriller part. My experience was a lot more hot, dusty, tedious, and entirely lacking in supernatural associates. lol

Anyway, complex world building, well crafted and original mythologies, and interesting characters are exactly what I look for in a new series. It's definitely on my list of things to read now. Thanks for sharing the review!

Some of the reviewers complained because there was 'too much archeology' (?!?!)

She DOES talk about the "Hot, dusty, tedious" part, LOL. When this starts she is doing mindless grunt work cataloging site pieces. It is pretty interesting stuff, and I like action, so I was all over it.
