Veronica (readingonthefly) Finished Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson #4) by Darynda Jones and now reading Unsympathetic Magic (Esther Diamond, #3) by Laura Resnick . Also Finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan over the weekend for my real life book club.

Kathy (Kindle-aholic) (kindleaholic) | 192 comments Finished Fury of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #6) by Diana Rowland - still gathering my thoughts. I liked it but missed the demon realm.

Reading Bitter Spirits (Roaring Twenties, #1) by Jenn Bennett and liking it a lot. Also have Iron Night (American Vampire, #2) by M.L. Brennan and Beggars in Spain (Sleepless, #1) by Nancy Kress and Dweller on the Threshold (Beri O'Dell, #1) by Rinda Elliott and more...

Christine | 752 comments I'm reading Dead Spots (Scarlett Bernard, #1) by Melissa F. Olson . I like the premise. The main character is a "null" with no magic who cancelled out the magic/supernatural powers of anyone within a ten foot radius of her. The supernaturals use her as their crime scene clean-up person to keep the regular world from finding out about them. But I wish there was actually more focus on her work and the writing style isn't one that particularly grabs me. But I'm only halfway through and it is the first in the series, so I'll cut it some slack.

Christine | 752 comments I'm almost done with Dead Spots (Scarlett Bernard, #1) by Melissa F. Olson and it's one of those books that seems like such a great premise on the surface, but the more you read and the more you think about it, the more you notice all these things that don't make sense. It's fine if you can just read it on the surface and enjoy the basic story without thinking about it too much.

Al Armstrong I just finished "Whispers Underground" in the "Rivers of London" series. I can't recommend it highly enough! The series has everything I love!

Christine | 752 comments I finished both Dead Spots (Scarlett Bernard, #1) by Melissa F. Olson and Trail of Dead (Scarlett Bernard, #2) by Melissa F. Olson and this is clearly not the series for me. The logic was not all that logical, too many things didn't quite make sense, and I can't say I cared very much about any of the characters.

message 2364: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I also finished Ex-Patriots (Ex-Heroes, #2) by Peter Clines . Maybe not the greatest book I've ever read, but just plain fun. I enjoy the comic book superhero geek vibe.

Up now is Fate's Edge (The Edge, #3) by Ilona Andrews in audio and All Spell Breaks Loose (Raine Benares, #6) by Lisa Shearin in print.

message 2365: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk I finally finished The Mammoth Hunters The Mammoth Hunters (Earth's Children, #3) by Jean M. Auel . Now I'm going to start with a re-read of Halfway to the Grave Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost .

message 2366: by Tiger (new)

Tiger Gray (tiger_gray) | 2 comments I just finished Valor of the Healer

I loved it! It isn't reinventing the fantasy wheel or anything--many of the characters and plot points are very familiar--but it is an immensely satisfying story. Or at least, I thought so!

I'm finally reading some Lilith StCrow, Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow and am reallyl enjoying it! It's dark like the downside ghosts series, but not quite as harsh.

message 2370: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I finished All Spell Breaks Loose (Raine Benares, #6) by Lisa Shearin which I thought was a good wrap up to the series. I'm going to miss Raine. I also finished Fate's Edge (The Edge, #3) by Ilona Andrews , but I have to say Jack and George were the highlight of the book for me.

Now I'm listening to Monster Hunter Vendetta (MHI, #2) by Larry Correia which is really hitting the spot right now.

message 2371: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) finished Stormdancer (The Lotus War, #1) by Jay Kristoff , was pretty good but i ended up rating it only 3.5 stars. mainly being that i went in knowing little about the Japanese culture and had to spend half the book looking up words in google which i found somewhat tiresome. loved Buruu and Yukiko. the world was pretty incredible as well, in a bad way. lol.

also finished When She Woke by Hillary Jordan have to say im highly surprised by how much i ended up enjoying this book, i was concerned i was going to hate it with how much religion is involved in it, but after i got past maybe the first 1/4 - 1/3 i had trouble putting the book down. i love how the characters changes and grows, by the end of the book she was nothing like how she was at the start, and she really was incredible. so brave and considerate of others. i'll deff being looking for more books by thi author.

Christine | 752 comments I am loving Monster Hunter Vendetta (MHI, #2) by Larry Correia on audio! It's like having my own personal action movie playing while I'm walking around doing other stuff.

message 2376: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments Monster Hunter Vendetta (MHI, #2) by Larry Correia was tons of fun, a bit gross a few times, and included the best gnomes ever and some very unique zombies. I went straight into Monster Hunter Alpha (MHI, #3) by Larry Correia but was surprised to find that the author has shifted the POV for this book and most of the MHI team is not in the book. At least not so far. Still, I'm enjoying it, although I do miss Owen.

I tried that first Gini Koch book and was totally expecting to love it (I liked the MIB movies) but even taking into account the over-the-topness of it, Kitty was too much of a Mary Sue for me and by the fourth chapter I was desperate for an 'off' switch for Jeff.

The Monster Hunter books are on my TBR list so hopefully I'll enjoy those more.

If Kitty and Jeff annoyed you in the first book, they would really annoy you in the later books. I have to be in just the right frame of mind to take them, and keep debating if I really want to continue the series or not.

One warning about the Monster Hunter books: they are long and the dude loves his guns and weapons. I once heard someone else describe the first book as "gun porn" because he spends so much time describing different weapons. I read the first one in print, but I'm enjoying them more on audio.

Sue | 28 comments I'm reading Archangel's Blade, book 4 in Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series and I'm a hot mess! I love the way this series is written, lots of references to previous characters and plot lines which just makes it such a rich read. Engaged from page one and will stay up late to finish it (or be finished by it!) tonight. Loving me one hot vampire~

Thanks for the heads up about the MHI books. I don't know the first thing about guns, except which end the bullet comes out of, but I don't think the "gun porn" will bother me too much. Plus, I can always skim those parts if they get too long. ;)

Sharon Michael | 111 comments About a third into Dark Moon Rising by Ashley Dunson (doesn't seem to be listed in the GR listings). Enjoying it a lot more than many of the free downloads I try (I don't think it's still free) but the main characters are interesting, paranormal characters are varied and there isn't (so far) graphic sex scenes or 'sparkly' vampires.

Christine | 752 comments I finished Monster Hunter Legion (MHI, #4) by Larry Correia but now I have to wait until July for the next one. But it might be worth the wait because it looks like the next one might be about Agent Franks. Love him.

Now I'm listening to A Plague Upon Your Family (Zombie Fallout, Book 2) by Mark Tufo

I was thinking of Jhereg (Vlad Taltos, #1) by Steven Brust , but after the Zombie Fallout book, I think I need something fun and a little lighthearted.

Still working my way through Alien vs. Alien (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #6) by Gini Koch in print.

I wanted to go on to the next one, but my local B&N didn't have it in stock, so I have to order it. Now, I'm Currently reading Libriomancer. It isn't what I expected, but it is pretty good so far.

Christine | 752 comments I did settle on Jhereg (Vlad Taltos, #1) by Steven Brust for my current audiobook. I'm about 30% and really enjoying it.

I finished Alien vs. Alien (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #6) by Gini Koch and now I think I'm going to try to finish up a different series and read Shift (Shifters, #5) by Rachel Vincent

message 2393: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) I'm definitely trying to juggle too many books at onece, for me at least. I just finished Goddess with a Blade (Rowan Summerwaite #1) by Lauren Dane , which I liked more than I was expecting. Currently reading The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice , Murder In Thrall (Scotland Yard #1) by Anne Cleeland , and Abducted (The Lizzy Gardner Series, #1) by T.R. Ragan . Also half-way through my re-read of A Perfect Blood (The Hollows, #10) by Kim Harrison .

I hate to hear that, I just started it. Overall I think each book never lived up to the previous books.

Just out of curiousity, and this is an open question for anyone, what are some of the motivations for continuing to read a series when the quality starts to go down? Another situation I see fairly often is people who keep reading a series that they've never really liked. For me, if a series doesn't grab me by book two at the latest, I'm done. Too many other books out there to sample to spend time reading something, hoping that it gets better. But I'm curious what others think.

I do that with new series, but there are some that I have been reading forever and it is hard to give up when you have read 5, 10 or even 15 books. That is a lot invested in and you remember when the books were good, hoping that they will get better again.

I will continue with a series through a couple of books that aren't quite as good as previous books if it is a fairly long-term series that I've liked. I think all long term series have some books that an individual reader will like much less than others. If it gets to a 3rd book that I don't much care for, I will usually switch to 'read from the library' rather than buy ... and if it doesn't pick up again, I drop it. I do tend to be very much a character driven reader so am probably more inclined to continue through a couple of poor plots/storylines because of attachment to the characters than many readers.

I don't continue to read a series that a really don't like. I've been following a couple of series where I liked the first book or two very well but the series has gone in directions I don't like. I will still pick up a book occasionally at the library to see if things have changed, but unless there are changes, I don't actually follow those series.

Christine | 752 comments Veronica G. wrote: "Just out of curiousity, and this is an open question for anyone, what are some of the motivations for continuing to read a series when the quality starts to go down? "

For me, I think it all depends on the series. If I've read six books and there are only two or three left to the end of the series, I'm more likely to keep reading just to see how it all turns out. If I find out it's open ended and there may be many more books, I'm more inclined to drop it if I'm not enjoying it. At the same time, there are different books for different moods. Some books may not be the most well written, but they may just be quick, fun reads that I keep going back to when I need a break from other things. Comfort in the familiar I guess.

Another factor is whether or not I've already purchased the books. Once upon a time I would have five or six books in a series that I hadn't even started yet. Then I felt compelled to read them since I already paid for them. I've learned my lesson on that one though, and don't stockpile series like that anymore. Of course, I still have the backlog of stockpiled books to wade through.

I have gotten better over the years about dropping a series after the first or second book when I realize it's not doing it for me. I think by the third book, I sometimes feel invested in the characters and want to see what happens to them. But if I can cut myself off after the first book or two, I fine with never knowing what happened to them.
