Reading

Love this series as well, about halfway through "Whispers"

Up now is

I loved it! It isn't reinventing the fantasy wheel or anything--many of the characters and plot points are very familiar--but it is an immensely satisfying story. Or at least, I thought so!

I liked this series ... except for the last book, which completed the series and was truly awful.
I'm finally reading some Lilith StCrow,
and am reallyl enjoying it! It's dark like the downside ghosts series, but not quite as harsh.

how was kiss of steel its on my ebooks to buy list?

In print I'm reading

I tried that first Gini Koch book and was totally expecting to love it (I liked the MIB movies) but even taking into account the over-the-topness of it, Kitty was too much of a Mary Sue for me and by the fourth chapter I was desperate for an 'off' switch for Jeff.
The Monster Hunter books are on my TBR list so hopefully I'll enjoy those more.

If Kitty and Jeff annoyed you in the first book, they would really annoy you in the later books. I have to be in just the right frame of mind to take them, and keep debating if I really want to continue the series or not.
One warning about the Monster Hunter books: they are long and the dude loves his guns and weapons. I once heard someone else describe the first book as "gun porn" because he spends so much time describing different weapons. I read the first one in print, but I'm enjoying them more on audio.

Thanks for the heads up about the MHI books. I don't know the first thing about guns, except which end the bullet comes out of, but I don't think the "gun porn" will bother me too much. Plus, I can always skim those parts if they get too long. ;)

Still working my way through

good author good series I am really burning through it fast. but am glad I discovered this gem of a series so late in the game because I am not good at waiting for new-releases/pre-orders. LOL.

I finished

I hate to hear that, I just started it. Overall I think each book never lived up to the previous books.

I will hopefully finish A Clash of Kings and Violet Tendencies today and hopefully my re-read of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone before feb 1rst.

Just out of curiousity, and this is an open question for anyone, what are some of the motivations for continuing to read a series when the quality starts to go down? Another situation I see fairly often is people who keep reading a series that they've never really liked. For me, if a series doesn't grab me by book two at the latest, I'm done. Too many other books out there to sample to spend time reading something, hoping that it gets better. But I'm curious what others think.

I do that with new series, but there are some that I have been reading forever and it is hard to give up when you have read 5, 10 or even 15 books. That is a lot invested in and you remember when the books were good, hoping that they will get better again.

I will continue with a series through a couple of books that aren't quite as good as previous books if it is a fairly long-term series that I've liked. I think all long term series have some books that an individual reader will like much less than others. If it gets to a 3rd book that I don't much care for, I will usually switch to 'read from the library' rather than buy ... and if it doesn't pick up again, I drop it. I do tend to be very much a character driven reader so am probably more inclined to continue through a couple of poor plots/storylines because of attachment to the characters than many readers.
I don't continue to read a series that a really don't like. I've been following a couple of series where I liked the first book or two very well but the series has gone in directions I don't like. I will still pick up a book occasionally at the library to see if things have changed, but unless there are changes, I don't actually follow those series.

For me, I think it all depends on the series. If I've read six books and there are only two or three left to the end of the series, I'm more likely to keep reading just to see how it all turns out. If I find out it's open ended and there may be many more books, I'm more inclined to drop it if I'm not enjoying it. At the same time, there are different books for different moods. Some books may not be the most well written, but they may just be quick, fun reads that I keep going back to when I need a break from other things. Comfort in the familiar I guess.
Another factor is whether or not I've already purchased the books. Once upon a time I would have five or six books in a series that I hadn't even started yet. Then I felt compelled to read them since I already paid for them. I've learned my lesson on that one though, and don't stockpile series like that anymore. Of course, I still have the backlog of stockpiled books to wade through.
I have gotten better over the years about dropping a series after the first or second book when I realize it's not doing it for me. I think by the third book, I sometimes feel invested in the characters and want to see what happens to them. But if I can cut myself off after the first book or two, I fine with never knowing what happened to them.
