What are you reading?

it was a bit odd when i read the Gathering, i new the characters wouldnt be the same as the first series and i doubted they'd be as good, but they ended up being great! and there powers are back-story are just as interesting.

yes I picked up The Gathering and started reading it but like you said the characters wernt the same and it was weird so I put it down.I really want to love it though and I've heard its just as good.

it really is just as good!
once you get past the oddness of reading about different characters, you'll find yourself really enjoying it :)

i cant believe you were disappointed! i was a bit iffy about Maya at first but i warmed up to her pretty quickly, plus a side character - Daniel, was fantastic. and i loved how they lived in that weird town, made it harder for the characters to figure out something was wrong.

yes, im guessing it another bookcover bug.

I NEED to read this! I also thought that I would need more time to warm up to the new characters but they grew on me pretty fast.

It made me pretty sad to be so disappointed. :-( It was just very bland for me. Watching the characters spend the first book doing nothing but trying to figure out what I already knew was just not enough for me. I really should have liked Maya - I'm a huge animal person, but overall I found the characters and the setting really underdeveloped and the story line slow. I'll get to book 2 someday, but I'm on such a book lull I just can't make myself read anything that was mediocre the first time.

Would it be better to read the Darkness Rising series before the Darkest Powers Series ...

i read the darkest powers series first and didnt really have a problem with maya and friends not knowing what was going on but i know where Lauren is coming from - its a bit annoying to know whats going on before the characters do, but i just pretended they where from two completely separate series until at the end of The Calling where maya and friends started to figure things out.
but i think you might be better off reading Darkness Rising first then Darkest Powers.

Based on book 1 of Darkness Rising you can read them either way. By the third book that may not be true true based on some author spoilers.

LOVE the Charlie Davidson series! Can't wait for book 4!! >.<

Let me know how that goes. I've been thinking of starting it, but I'm kinda on the fence. Looks kinda... cliche, I guess.

I thought kindling the moon was a little cliche, but others seemed to have liked it.

Lol. I had the same reaction. I kept wondering how it could be a YA book?? But I loved it.

I feel like I was one of the few that didn't like that one. I think my issue was with the main character. Hope it turns out better for you.

I thought it was okay. I really liked the premise and the basic plot, but it was lacking any emotional connection for me. We're told the main character is a highly trained assassin but she sure didn't act like one. Since it's the first in a series, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and will likely check out the next one at some point. Especially since I already own it. The only good thing I can say about Borders closing is at least I no longer have a compulsive need to go to the store every week to use the latest coupon so my rate of book buying has plummeted.

I thought about continuing with the next book because (view spoiler) But I figured if I didn't like the characters in the first book, it probably wouldn't change much.
I mourn our Borders every time I pass by the empty building. So sad. Those coupons were pretty dangerous though...["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

I've been debating reading this one a long time now.

Maybe try a library copy because judging from the reviews it's either a hit or miss.
GR is buggy again, I'm seeing a different book cover...

How did you like it? I'm currently reading Shadow Reader too. I've read Anathema too, but it wasn't for me...

My problem is that I've read enough series where the first book was just so-so, but I ended up liking the rest of the series, that I feel like I have to give a series a two-book chance. But by then I'm usually caught up in the story enough that I end up continuing to read, just to see what happens. Unless the writing is bad or the characters are really obnoxious.

If I didn't have such a huge pile of books in my TBR mountain, I would probably give more books a chance. I'm sure I'm missing out on some series though... Maybe one day I'll be able to go back and revisit some of those series.

I try to read the first two of a new to me series back to back. For example, I read the first book of the Kate Daniels series and didn't think it was a series I would follow it, crazy eh? Then by the end of the 2nd book I was hooked. Another example would be Nicole Peeler's Jane True series, but that was more of embarassment over the covers.
I came to terms that my TBR pile will never go away, and my habit of buying books when I still have a TBR pile isn't going to decrease anytime soon. If I don't like a series by the end of the 2nd book I know I can eliminate all of the sub-sequent books from the series. I tend to use this tool in rationalizing the purchase of additional book in new series. Shocking, but true. Until of course, I hear that the series I dismissed gets better, that they are amazing etc. and then I'll give book 3 a try, my best example of this would be Lara Adrian's Midnight breed series (oh and Twilight, I should have never wasted that much time reading something I didn't enjoy.) It's just not for me. I might read book 4 since I bought it at a "borders is going out of business sale" but I'm not in a big hurry to crack it open. It'll be there, waiting. My one exception to the one book rule, would be Fifty Shades, I gave up after the first one, partly because reading anyone emulating Stephanie Meyer's writing style makes me get a little cranky. Oh my, what a tangent.
I guess I could have said in a more succinct way, that I judge a series after reading two books, since the first one is the author setting the stage and establishing the world/characters and book two is more of an indicator if this series is worth my time.

I think it depends on what bugs me about the book. In some cases I will continue on. Sometimes I'll check the reviews for the 2nd and 3rd books just to see if what was annoying me is still there. If I really don't like the main character, I probably won't continue, especially if it's in first person, and if I don't like the writing style, I'll probably stop as well. If the story and worldbuilding aren't my speed, I'll usually try the next one. It all depends, and there are random exceptions. I'm afraid my ratings are super subjective. Sometimes I think it depends on my mood at the time and what book I read right before it. I'll also continue on if there is a lot of buzz about the series. (I'm not a huge Mac fan, but I'm continuing with the Fever series, because of all the hype.)
I'm glad you kept on with the Kate Daniels series. That's one of my favorites. : )

Have to get around to this someday! I was so disappointed with book 1 I just haven't even been interested.
