Jalilah I am reading the 2nd book of the Mortal Instrument series City of Ashes. For some reason I like it slightly less than the first book. Or maybe it is just because I read Beauty just before and that was soooo good.

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Just finished Right Hand Magic and found it difficult to put down. Golgotham was an intriguing city and found the characters interesting and well developed. I'm not a fan of the dark/grim urban fantasy that seems to be so prevalent in urban fantasy so was delighted to find this entertaining UF title.

Have already downloaded the second in the series and will start on that tonight.

I enjoyed some of Nancy A. Collins early stuff and was intrigued when I saw this one. The reviews have not been great though, so I've been putting it off. Glad to see you liked it. Admittedly I liked the darkness of her earlier stuff, so I don't know if I'll like her fluffy side.

I ended up buying Right Hand Magic (Golgotham, #1) by Nancy A. Collins at Border's going-out-of-business sale. (So sad. I miss our store.) I tend toward the lighter UF as opposed to the dark/grim UF, so I'm looking forward to getting to this one.

There are those books that I just can't stop thinking about after I've put them down and can't wait to get back to. But, not with this one - I have to work to remember what I'm reading each time I pick it back up. But, I couldn't say that I don't like it, I'm just not invested in it for some reason.

I always feel guilty not finishing a book - I rarely give up. But, I'm kind of feeling like there are just way too many books on my TBR pile that I would rather be reading and I discover more every day. So little time and soooooo many good books. Maybe I should come back to it in a few months.

I don't feel guilty, two reasons ... one, as you say, so many books and obviously some I'd rather be reading ... second, I read to be entertained and if a book isn't entertaining me, I don't feel guilty if I quit.

A bit like the people who turn off a TV program they don't like ... only for me it's books, not TV.

Christine | 752 comments Just started Ceremony in Death (In Death, #5) by J.D. Robb . These are usually nice little breaks from my immersion in urban fantasy and paranormal romance, but what's this? Eve investigating a mystery involving Wiccans? Witches and magic and maybe shape-shifting cats? Knowing Eve, I guess it will all have logical explanations in the end, but for now I'm loving it.

This is one of several of my personal 'favorites' in the In Death series. There aren't quite as many logical explanations in this one as you'd think there might be.

There are several other situations in the In Death series that are or border on paranormal ... one I particularly remember is her first meeting with Peabody's father.

Oh, yeah! I can't wait to meet Peabody's family! I wonder how many more books I have to read to get to that one?

message 595: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom I used to suffer from the 'had to finish' syndrome. Then my TBR monster got to over 500 books, ARGUH ! I started the 100 page test, it works for me. I open a book and read page 100, if I like the page I will start the book. If when I get to page 100 and it sucks I throw it to the curb. It really has shortened my TBR list and gives me a good look at the authors style without a huge commitment. I have not had any problem with spoilers doing this.

I'm really bad about titles and with so many in the series can't remember which one this scene comes in.

It's interesting to see how some of the characters in a book will continue on in the series. Jamie, from "Ceremony" is one of them.

You mean you can't keep 30+ books straight? I'm only on the fifth and already can't keep them straight. I haven't met Jamie yet. I'm hoping that at some point Peabody will have the hots for somebody who doesn't turn out to be one of the bad guys.

That sounds like a pretty good test. My TBR monster is scary and I am actually a little stressed about it(odd as that sounds). I might have to try it. :)

I want to try some JD Robb, but see previous comment about TBR monster...though I think a friend of mine is going to push them on me soon.
Currently taking a short break from UF and trying a new author to me Julia's Chocolates by Cathy Lamb - we will see.

message 599: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Christine wrote: "You mean you can't keep 30+ books straight? "

Not really ... have trouble with most of them over 5 or 6 ... I'm doing good to remember the authors!

You'll meet Jamie in Ceremony and you're in for a treat with Peabody's love life, which is actually an ongoing theme for 2 or 3 books and drives Eve right up the wall!

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Elisa wrote: "My TBR monster is scary and I am actually a little stressed about it(odd as that sounds). I might have to try it. :)"

I've NEVER had a TBR of more than 4 or 5 books in my life until I got my Kindle. I sort of 'overdosed' on the free for Kindle lists and think I now have 50-some books on my TBR list. I've kind of backed off and gotten a little more selective ... not just everything that sounds 'kind of' interesting but trying to cut back.

I also got kind of 'overdosed' on DNFs as well, got tired of half a dozen DNFs in a row and then just one 'okay' ... so went back to re=reads from my personal bookshelves for awhile.

Incidentally, the In Death series are all there ... that's one of half a dozen series that I go back to often.
