No problem, Amber. I'm going to post some comments over the weekend, since I'm finished with part 2 and am halfway through part 3. Maybe once I've posted some comments, you might find something you'd like to say.

Sorry for taking so long to post my comments about part 2. Busy busy busy.

Ok...

I find I have this underlying anxiety as I continue reading; I'm expecting something bad to happen to Dominic and/or Danny but life just goes on. Does anyone else feel this discomfort, level of suspense?

Did Ketchum stay in TR only to keep track of Cowboy Carl? I kept wanting him to join the fugitives and provide protection for them.

And what's up with Ketchum letting Six Pack Pam in on the secret! I'm was so mad at him. Yet, what could he have done? Afterall, he couldn't read or write. Distressing....

It's interesting that Danny was given more educational opportunities in Boston than he would ever had if he'd stayed in TR. Do you think he would have gotten out, anyway? Would he have become a writer?

Leary certainly is an unlikeable character with all his prejudices. Funny how he used them to get Danny into Exeter.

If you were to write a book, would you use a nom de plume? I think I would at least go back to my maiden name (I'm divorced) or take my "hubby" Jeff's last name. (We aren't officially married, yet, but plan to someday.) Hmmmm... would I want all those old classmates who know me by my maiden name to be green with envy over my success... what about my current friends and acquaintances who know me by my current name. Choices, choices... lol

Boy does Danny have a fixation on sex! He writes "interesting" stories about what happened in TR; mixing the truth and fiction into bizarre stories. Yet, he still comes off as very naive.

Katie is also a very unlikeable character; another one you love to hate. Perhaps he WOULD have been better off losing a few fingers to avoid going to Vietnam?

What lies we tell to children thinking we are protecting them. I can't help thinking about how Injun Jane would still be alive if Danny hadn't been told the bear story! But, would he have been able to accept the love triangle between Rose, Dominic, and Ketchum? Should we tell our children such things or not?

Fun to see Irving dropping names like Kurt Vonnegut.

Understandble why no one killed Cowboy Carl when he visited the restaurant, but boy did I wish someone had pulled the trigger! Why did Ketchum give the task to peaceful, non-violent folk? He's a violent man; he has the wherewithal to kill someone. And yet, why are we so willing to see an "innocent" man killed? Because he is dispicable and beat his women?

Interesting that Dominic is now attracted to plump women, when his wife was so petite. And Danny wants Dominic's women! Having been a plump person most of my life, I made an observation about the men who were attracted to me. Most of them were thin men. I have my theories about that, but will keep them to myself. lol

Rock on, constant readers!

Only in the beginning of part 2.

My first observation is that it didn't take Dom anytime at all to replace Injun Jane. In fact he didn't even seem to mourn her. I originally thought it was because he was so intent on protecting Danny, but now I wonder.

I know... you will find that Dominic is rarely without female companionship!

Okay, I guessed at Rosie's and Ketchum's love, but I didn't think that Ketchum would betray Dominic's friendship.

Duh.....Thinking with the wrong brain!!! ;o)

What's up with Six Pack Pam taking up with Carl? Well, at least she displayed the gumption to beat Carl up if he struck her.

Logging must be a lonely business. Bed-hopping is apparently an expected entertainment.

In this section, I found switching from memories of the past to present thoughts of the older writer, from one sentence to the next, without warning, irritating.

Yeah, Pam is a formidable woman! I just don't understand why Ketchum trusted her, and also WHY did she betray him by telling him about Injun Jane's death? Can't trust anyone!

The use of flasbacks becomes quite prevalent and VERY confusing at times. Yes, I find it irritating, too. It happens alot in Part 3 and I had to backtrack several times and re-read text to figure out what was going on!

Carly Svamvour (faganlady) | 14 comments I too tend to think that Irving had a few stories in his notebook and chained them all together for this book.

Debra ... if you're thinking of taking a nom-de-plume, choose a name and stick with it. Even if you remarry.

It's too confusing to change your name with your marriage - I had a hard time with my resume. Kept feeling I had to put the name from my first marriage on it, so lawyers would know who I was when they got a reference request.

When I got married the first time, one of the tellers in the bank advised me to continue to use my maiden name. I think I should have done that - but, of course, back then it wasn't the thing to do.

Hmm, This is where that old comic exercise would come in handy:

Merge the name of your very first pet with your grandmother's madien name...

Tinkle Golden (my cat)
Feisty Golden (my dog)

Of course the joke was that this would be your stripper name.

Thanks for the tip, Carly. I too, wish I'd kept my maiden name. It's kind of irritating to have lived my life with my ex's last name. Except for my son, there is really no tie to it.

It's probably a moot point, anyway... lol

I thought it had something to do with the street you grew up on... now I can't remember. I can't remember my first cat's name... I guess I'd go with the one I had when we moved to Michigan and lived in our house on Connaught.

So, that would be Peaches Golden
Dog would be Prize Golden

And yep, that would be your stripper names!
