vicki_girl | 2764 comments I just wanted to let everyone know that this author "Fred" appears to be an author that only goes by one name.

http://www.goodreads.com/author/list/...

I have weeded out the few others that made it into his profile (for now).

I gave him a brief bio.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Anyone want to tackle these books?

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48...

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54...

The few search results I can come up with, just seem to copy the same info from Amazon.

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Got the first one, vicki_girl. :)

And I'm starting to feel like that second one snuck in from an alternate universe.....

message 155: by vicki_girl (new)

vicki_girl | 2764 comments A couple more troublesome books.

Again, all I can seem to find is carbon copies of the amazon info.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments I got most of the ones listed under "Robert", but again, I've gotten stuck on the last few...

I am also having trouble with the following listed under "McDonald":

Robert is done. I think someone else helped.

And I got the other as well. A general tip: try searching Google Books by title when ISBN doesn't do the trick. Sometimes there are other editions, or listings without ISBN.

message 160: by vicki_girl (new)

vicki_girl | 2764 comments I usually do. I either forgot this time, or maybe there were more than one book with the same title...

I really do try everything I can before pestering the other librarians, I promise!

Lori Ehrman (lorilei) | 42 comments RIVKA!!!

1. On the Johnsons -----Yeh - I know, I'm not at all happy with the Johnsons:( But until I knew what I would end up with I needed to have some handle on who was who. The multiple spaces gets real confusing after a while I think I have toooooooo many to simply use spaces. When I get them all finally separated maybe we can put our heads together and come up with a good final fix. I've tried to put at least something in each of their bio to differentiate them as well.

2. Now about G.K. Chesterton. I have separated and recombined as best as I can do. I don't think I will ever read a "Father Brown" story after this. What I have found is that even books with the same title are no where near the same book. If you go look at him - you will see that I started putting the number of tales in each title and listed the name of the tales in each in the description. The ones without that information I was unable to determine the exact contents, but after finding that what is in one "Father Brown Book" is not in the other "Father Brown Book", I can't in good conscience combine them simple because they have the identical name.

Also I've done all I can with the foreign editions.

So take a look would you and tell me how you want me to proceed with them.

Thanks!

message 170: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments There is a general George Bush profile. I moved most of the books to either George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush, but there are several books I couldn't place, including one in (I believe) French.

There is also one quote attributed to George Bush. I'm not sure which president was to have said it.

Thanks!

message 171: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments Another one. Need foreign language help.

Is Siddharta Guatama an actual author, or is this confusion with the Hermann Hesse book Siddhartha?

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I'm too tired to do this myself right now, so I'm posting it here in the hope that someone else will fix it before I come back on. :-)

It looks like Charles Dickens needs a lot of work, but specifically A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings is combined with books containing Christmas stories by several different authors, like this one containing O. Henry's Gift of the Magi: A Christmas Carol and Other Favorites: A Christmas Carol, the Gift of the Magi , Dick Spindler's Family Christmas. Someone with more clarity of thought than I needs to separate out the 4 or 5 books that don't belong.

message 173: by Vitali (new)

Vitali (vitalinew) | 87 comments I will start a new thread for authors with partial names, as Michael suggested in message #143. Please, continue to post names of the authors here, and I'll update the list regularly (the topic will be locked by the moderator, but I'll be able to edit it.)

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments With respect to the list vitalinew just posted (fabulous work, by the way), how do we want to handle single author names which are correct? Should they be put in their own category or left off the list?

For example, at this point the two books attributed to Q are probably correct, that appears to be the pseudonym of the author.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Also, could a moderator "unsticky" this thread since it is both out-of-date and unnecessary with the new list vitalinew is updating? Let's let it float away to the bottom of the queue (I could just delete it, I suppose...)

message 176: by JG (Introverted Reader) (last edited Dec 13, 2008 11:32AM) (new)

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments So it looks like I'm going to have to take responsibility for my own problem in post #190. :-) In an attempt to make it easier for myself to see what belongs together on the combine page, I added the last parentheses containing the titles of the individual works. Once I did it, it looked wrong. Should I leave the incredibly long title or find some other way to do this? A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings (Penguin Classics) (Christmas Festivities, The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton, A Christmas Tree, The Seven Poor Travellers, The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain, Master Humphrey's Clock)

Edit: I stopped doing that until I get a yes or no, but now I'm wondering how to prevent all the editions of "A Christmas Carol and Other Stories" that contain different other stories from being automatically combined. Oh man, I hate it when I get caught up in classic authors.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments 1. Discourage people from using auto-combine
2. Change the name in some way that will fool the auto-combine issue and hopefully make it obvious to users that they shouldn't be combined (good luck with this, by the way :-)

message 178: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments For instance, always put graphic novel and don't put that in parentheses, and that will keep graphic novels from being combined with their straight text counterparts.

Lori Ehrman (lorilei) | 42 comments I went to the grocery store this evening and I'm like a bear to honey - if a store has books I find my way there. So here I am confronted with one of those revolving racks of books - I stop beside it and take a look at the book at my eye level - sure enough - the author is Rich Johnson. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 182: by David (new)

David Fernandes (azserrata) | 16 comments I just found books by Coe Jonathan that are in fact by Jonathan Coe.

Strangely, the source for those was "amazon.fr" which, in fact, refer the author as being Coe Jonathan.

Yack!

message 183: by Lori (new)

Lori Ehrman (lorilei) | 42 comments David - I've found with the copy of "Readerworks" software that I use for my library inventory at home - which also pulls from Amazon, lots of names come in incorectly from them. Readerworks creates a author list and any deviation is a new author so like:

Kinley mcgregor
Kinley Mcgregor
Kinley McGregor
McGregor, Kinley
mcgregor, Kinley
Mcgregor, Kinley ect

all are different authors even though her name is spelled correctly. I seriously doubt that they ever realy check or validate any of the information.

message 184: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (ssaccoliti) | 601 comments Do you want us to let you know if you can take an author off the list (for example, Olmsted and JK)?

how do we want to handle single author names which are correct? Should they be put in their own category or left off the list?

Definitely not the second. They tend to accumulate other books that do not belong to the genuine one-name author. Instead, I vote for making a note in the author bio, preferably giving some idea of what books are really theirs. And maybe a similar note on the list. Or put them on separately, as you suggested.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments I need some advice on this one...

I was working on the single-name authors, specifcally Adams. Apparently there is a poet who writes under the pseudonym "ADAMS" (all caps). However, I found the following during my googling for a first name.

Paula Adams Tennant, who writes under the name ADAMS, lives in Northern California. She served in the Navy during World War II and studied law after the war. She held various positions as a prosecutor and in 1970 was appointed to the U.S. Board of Parole. In 1983 she was appointed to the U.S. Parole Commission. She is a resident of northern California.

Tennant's published poetry include: Passion of Creation, The Two Headed God, Moon of Reflection, Sheaves of Silence, and Conversations with Keith all published by Lost Coast Press (Fort Bragg, California). [Source (of biographical information): Guide to the "A Few Good Women" Oral History Collection, 1938-2000, Penn State University Archives, Special Collections Library, Pennsylvania State University]

Should I leave the author as ADAMS, or put in her full name?

I vote for full name, with the italicized portion above put in her bio.
