wth? I found one with the list of all the authors, and the cover, to boot...I was updating it, and got the message "book could not be found."

Edit: And now it's back. ::banging head on the wall::

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Which one?

I am having issues with a Japanese edition now.

message 505: by Krystal109 (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments I can't find any authors for this book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...

Should I leave it as unknown?

I think you and I were working on the same one...you found another entry, combined, and deleted...it didn't occur to me to look for a duplicate on such an odd book...something about Roadkill. I moved to the other end of the list, so we won't cross purposes.

It translates to "Infernal Boys 1," according to Google Translate, if that helps. Which it doesn't appear to. I'd vote for "Various," since we're pretty sure it's an anthology...

message 508: by Krystal109 (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments I'm stopping after American Story. I need sleep, 5:30 am

The roadkill one I entered all the names... and it was like. THIS EXISTS and I lost all the info. Had to merge them and reenter the names.

message 509: by Krystal109 (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Pretty sure this book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10...

is totally incorrect. Everything I find for that ISBN is a POD for Sir Evelyns Charge Or a Childs Influence

message 510: by Yossarian (new)

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments I put this http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/94... to "Various" because I cannot find a thing about it. I found it mentioned on some Russian site, I think in some sort of reference list, on 2 different pages there, and I can find some references to Raduga Publishers, but they seem to have gone bust or something since, and yeah.

Yeah that's another of these Russian ones that the same user has. No idea where the ISBN came from.

message 512: by Krystal109 (last edited Aug 23, 2012 05:53AM) (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments I suppose I should input it correctly at least and combine it.

I thought you were going to bed, so I added the authors, and I'll take out the isbn.

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/93... This one is also by the same Russian company, Raduga Publishers, with no info anywhere that I can find. There is a list of [some of] their stuff here: http://isbndb.com/d/publisher/raduga_... but neither of the two above are listed there, of course.

Ah, you have more skillz than me lol. Okay, fixed with the name "Aleksandr Livergant" because I wasn't entirely sure that the "middle" name there was formatted/typed 100% correctly (and also he seems to be listed as "A. Livergant" a bunch on there as well).

message 518: by Krystal109 (last edited Aug 23, 2012 05:59AM) (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments I agree. Most of his stuff is listed as A. Livergant anyways.

As for the other Russian book, I messaged the person who added it. If they reply I will see what info I can get for it.

EDIT: BED I SWEAR NOW

message 519: by Yossarian (new)

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments hahaha. Several more of them are from her also. Maybe they're in her collection and she can provide more info. I got another author name from WorldCat for another one of them, but most don't have any ISBN listed so they're more trouble.

message 520: by Krystal109 (last edited Aug 23, 2012 06:13AM) (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Send her a mass email... asking for ISBN's or they are gonna be deleted mwahahaha.

(I'm waiting for the lawn sprinklers to go off so I can put my pages of donations on the curb without them getting soaked).

Edit: you know you're sleepy and spend too much time on GR's when you say pages instead of bags.

message 521: by Yossarian (new)

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/82... This one was in WorldCat with the author Lloyd C Douglas, any idea if that's the same as Lloyd C. Douglas in the system already? Clicking his name on the isbndb page for Nursing Stories goes to http://isbndb.com/d/person/douglas_ll... "Lloyd Virgil Douglas," which isn't a "C" name, so I'm perplexed.

I doubt they are one and the same but Worldcat has Lloyd C. Douglas.

Disambiguated to Lloyd C.^^ Douglas

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments Alrighty :)

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12... This one was all in Cyrillic, so I added the author names in it as well. Should their translated names (Efim Kurganov; N. G. Okhotin) be included somehow also, or...? I'm still not entirely sure about how the whole -name written in another language- deal works...

message 524: by Paula (last edited Aug 23, 2012 06:37AM) (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Are the books published in other languages?

If the book has been translated from the original language to a roman language then the roman language name goes first then other language names secondary. If the book has never been published out side of the original language then the primary author name stays in the original language

Edit: So if a book is published only in Russian (original) and Bulgarian then the primary author name is in Russian and the bulgarian editions can have the Bulgarian author name in the secondary position

message 525: by Yossarian (new)

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments Ah okay, I see. Yeah I don't think that one is translated. The translated title would be like "Russian literary anecdotes" or something similar, and there's no other editions. So I'll leave it as-is with the Cyrillic names. :)

I'm not very good with magazines. Here's a link to the book on OpenLibrary.

message 527: by Krystal109 (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Contacted Inna about those Russian books. Here is what she said:

Dear Krystal,

If you have read the info on the book attentively, you have certainly noticed that the book has a title, the publication year, the type of the cover, and the publisher which is Raduga Publishers.

The book was published by Raduga Publishers which was a publishing house in the Soviet Union. ISBNs were non-existent in the Soviet Union, and the first ISBNs ever used in the territiry of the country appeared in the early 1990-s.

That is why ISBN is not available for the book now, and will never be available in future. It is almost the same as asking for ISBN of an Oxford collection of verse dated 1912.

As for the list of the authors whose short poems were included there, I'll try to provide the full list by Monday next.

What other info are you interested in? I'll be glad to help.

Best wishes,
Inna

I messaged her back and asked her to add the authors for any of her anthologies that are not currently listed correctly and fill in as much info as she can get from her books (she is a GR's Librarian).

So a lot of those Russian books should get taken care of with more info. Thanks, guys.

Yossarian (polymathicmonkey) | 169 comments Well I fixed them with the info I could find from WorldCat, and they do have ISBNs, though I guess assigned later? Oh well, we've done what we can! lol.

Now this one http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11... is in the isbndb: http://isbndb.com/d/book/old_mother_h... and WorldCat: http://www.worldcat.org/title/old-mot... but has no author anywhere...?

Yeah, I've fixed a few that had ISBN's assigned retroactively (not entirely sure how that works, because once a book has been released it can't really be recalled...)

Oh, I would assign that to Various. It has all the hallmarks of that "author" (or if you can convince someone better versed in classic fairy tales to change it to the Grimms.)

Yep that's another one of those I won't pretend to understand it things, lol.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11... This one I looked all over the site provided, and can't find anything about this "306 best poems published of the year" thing it's talking about. Nor do I find it elsewhere. Anyone with more skills got anything?

See http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/... for the book in question. On the whole, www.ozon.ru is one of the best online bookshops for books in Russian and can be used as a reference source, as it's very accurate.

We have dozens of authors named Rivka. More if we count alternate spellings like Rifka and Rivkah.

Not to mention Rebecca, Rebbecca, etc.

Well, some of them are dead. Most have credentials I don't, like being published authors.

Keith (kgf0) | 377 comments MissJessie wrote: "Maybe since you have pointed this out, more people who had not thought of doing this, due perhaps to lack of time or inclination, will begin doing so."

That would be awesome. :) It would even be good if fewer new Librarians "helped" by merging the author record with diacritics into the one without, though that does seem to be less common lately.

Beth wrote: "And, as rivka pointed out, sometimes it's an issue with imports. If I'm not familiar with the author, and the import is wrong, chances are not good that I'm going to catch it."

Yeah, the imports probably will always be problematic (which is why I had previously thought it would be better to use their orthography, until I was roundly corrected). We just need to be careful, if we're going to merge them, to do so into the one that is most correct/inline with policy. I've been trying to stay in the habit of either doing the research, or leaving it alone, when I'm not sure what something obviously wrong should be. And if it's really wrong and I'm really clueless (or out of time), I bring it here to you helpful lot. :)

But even without diacritic issues, we will probably always have Twain and Samuel Clemens waiting to be merged into Mark Twain. 'Tis the nature of the beast, and the reason why Sisyphus is our patron deity. -shrug-

This author has a lot of Unknown books and books that are not written by them, such as a bunch of manga that I have already cleaned a bit out.
