Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments Somehow, I made it through college without having to read the Canterbury Tales. (Although, I loved the movie "A Knight's Tale" with Heath Ledger.)

My Waterloo in college was Eurydice in the Underworld. Ugh. It was from a post-modern literature class, and I was not prepared for the NC17 material in the book (and I do warn anyone who ventures to read it - this book is sick). I still scratch my head over Acker's popularity.

I should probably head over to the 'books I loathed' forum and add this one, lol.

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments What about "Confederacy of Dunces"? That's supposedly a "classic" but I couldn't finish it - it was just to disgusting.

I actually liked Canterbury Tales. But not enough to re-read it or anything. lol.

most people would find it surprising that as a 7 year old i got through the little women series while my mom as an adult couldnt

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I like ancient Greek mythology and books about that. My first experience to Greek mythology was when I was in eighth grade and instead of doing Shakespeare in my freshman year of high school, we did Greek mythology. I didn't experience Shakespeare until my Junior year and I managed to get through school without having to read Romeo and Juliet.

My sister-in-law, whom I consider one of the most intelligent, well-read people I know, couldn't make it through this book, either. I decided if it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't have any luck with it, either.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments I'm reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog and I can't decide if I like it or not. I'm about 1/3 of the way in. Somehow, I keep on reading it.

That book did nothing for me. I thought it was pretentious.

The book, or the residents of the apartment building?

Both, Elizabeth. I finished it because it was for my f2f book club but got absolutely no pleasure from the reading. In fairness though my friend and I, and two others disliked it too! The other ten people did.

I'm like this too. I have so many books in my TBR pile, I don't want to waste time on something I'm not enjoying.

Elizabeth (Alaska) That's too bad, Marialyce. I nearly always "throw in the towel" with books I don't like, but have, like you, finished a few for the sake of others.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments The Elegance of the Hedgehog is going more smoothly now that I realized that there are *two* narrators! Boy, did I feel stupid when I finally figured that one out...

Nancy (Colorado) I am about to throw in the towel for The Forsyte Saga.... school started and I'd rather read books that I want to read and aren't a struggle to connect with (which....since I am reading other books...makes the connection more difficult). I am about a little more than halfway through and feel like I am riding "The Struggle Bus." Oh well!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Sorry you're not enjoying that Nancy. But not every book is for every reader.

message 65: by Nancy (Colorado) (new)

Nancy (Colorado) Yes, you have posted that to me before! Case in point. I liked Elegance of the Hedgehog better than this book! You and I both love reading and we can definitely make good choices that value our time, purpose, and interests!I haven't thrown in the towel just yet-but definitely contemplating it.

Louise I'm persuading myself that 12 pages is too early to quit... But Branded by Fire is really pushing my buttons in the wrong way.
this super alpha leopard woman hates Riley the wolf man so much that she struggles to stay away from him, she really does, but finally she caves in - on page 8?!?! And so far she sounds like a sulking 16 year old teenager/the storyline excuse for a bad erotic movie... I'll force myself to read a few chapters, but I'm sensing this is 6.99 out the window...
