Mary (marybt) | 336 comments I couldn't freaking believe it!

I'm seriously going to quit writing Amazon reviews - this is obnoxious.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2FIWRO2...

It was a review I wrote about a children's book.

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments Well he/she has also reviewed: troll dolls, jelly beans, and brocolli soup. So perhaps I should take being called an idiot by this person with a grain of salt. lol.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I have never written an Amazon review. I have never wanted to. I *have* wanted to comment on one occasionally.

Kiana Davenport | 51 comments Dear Mary...you have to remember that the digital age has opened doors to everyone across the globe, including those who are angry at life, or even unbalanced. Writing reviews is chancey, because often someone with nothing to do will review YOU.

I, too, have been 'attacked' by people reviewing my novels, or someone reviewing MY book reviews. You have to let these insults roll off your back. Its the digital age. Take the high road, look at the beautiful life you have ( I see a cute child in your photo) and remember there are a lot of unhappy people out there looking for ways to vent their anger, and frustration at life.

Happy Reading! And alohas from Hawaii. Kiana Davenport, author of HOUSE OF SKIN and CANNIBAL NIGHTS, Pacific Stories.

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments Very true, Kiana. Plus the anonimity of the internet gives cowards a little false courage. I've seen in a lot but it still always takes me by surprise. Out of curiosity, I checked out to see if anyone commented on the other people who gave the book low reviews. One person told the reviewer that her "children must be retarded." It was crazy the ugly things people said! I just reported each and every one to Amazon. That's cowardly and uncalled for.

Elizabeth, I generally only review if I feel very strongly one way or another - either I loved it or hated it. I usually don't bother with mediocre products.

Viola | 1014 comments My new goal for 2011 is to write a review of every single book I read in the year. I think I'm only missing 2 or 3 books right now.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments Yikes!! That's terrible. I post all my reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari, etc. and usually, I don't have a problem. Although, a while back, I did have an author and (presumably) her friend question my review (although not as meanly as your troll apparently did!)

As an author, I am concerned about posting reviews of books since I worry that it will reflect poorly on me. But I try to be as gentle (yet honest) as I can. I appreciate other people's reviews so much when selecting books, that I feel like I want to put in my $.02 as well!

Kiana Davenport | 51 comments @Michelle...I agree with you. As a fellow author, I often hesitate to write reviews. I never write them as 'favors,' but when I read some-thing I love, I know a good review might help an author. Also, I never give 1-star reviews. I know how hard authors work. If I don't like a book, I don't review it.

Still, its all a delicate balance. And, as Mary says earlier, there is always unexpected backlash. My ebook, HOUSE OF SKIN PRIZE-WINNING STORIES has gotten 18 5-star reviews, and I have been accused of 'planting' friends to write those reviews. I fact, I don't know a single one of those reviewers!

I think we can only trust our conscience and our higher natures and write our honest thoughts, and let the 'nutcases ' of the world fade away. And please, Michelle, don't let yourself be muzzled just because you're an author! That would be an ironic tragedy! You are allowed to have your say.
Happy Reading, and reviewing! With alohas from Kiana Davenport,
author of CANNIBAL NIGHTS, PACIFIC STORIES, Volume II

That is my goal, too. Some books I don't have a lot to say, but I want to memorialize my impression in case I ever want to go back to a book.

So true!

I think there are some authors who pose as readers and then write excellent reviews for their own books. (sock puppets). I was reading about Edgar Allen Poe the other day, and apparently, this was something that happened back in his day as well.

Wow, Viola that is impressive. I might do that for 2012.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I have written a review for every book I've read since becoming a member here.

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments I have kept a journal since 2000 where I've written down every book I read, when I completed it, how many pages it was, what it was about (just a short paragraph), any quotes I liked out of it, and whether I liked it or not. Well, it's actually several journals now, but you know what I mean. lol.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments Lol, Mary. That's one of the reasons why I joined GoodReads! I love looking over my list of books because it reminds me of other things I was doing while I was reading.
