Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapter 12 (Tyrion) - Chapter 15 (Sansa)

32) Laughed at Vary's dressing up as a woman.

33) Do you think Tyrion will use the steps in Vary's bedroom to his advantage in the future?

34) I'm thinking Shae will be Tyrion's downfall. Anyone else?

35) Cersei is such a tease. She is doing what she told Sansa she does - bear a different kind of weapon. There is a word for women like her.

36) Here's a thought, after pondering Lisa's thoughts about Tyrion's dad, could he have tried to get rid of his son by framing him? Could he have sent the assassin after Bran?

37) What do you think of Arya's new "friends"? Should she have revealed herself to Harwin? Who the heck is he with?

38) I think Robb just signed his own death warrant. He did a stupid thing. Anyone else agree?

39) Gah! Who the heck is Tansy and do we really care?

40) Seems like we have a bit of a problem communicating our ideas in Kingdom Robb. Wonder how Robb's uncle likes being bossed around by his nephew?

41) Jon is having problems of a feminine nature. Talk about blackmail. Any thoughts on this? Think wedding bells are in Jon's future?

42) Mammoths and Giants! How fun. Wonder if the Mammoth is a Sigil of any houses?

I feel I'm forgetting something. If anyone wants to add a question let me know.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Yesterday and today I have and will be running around like a mad woman. They have a tax free holiday on clothes and school supplies. I'll try to answer Sandy's questions later today. I also have a New parent orientation for my son's school which will last half of today. I just wanted to post the questions before I left so you all didn't have to wait.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s Answers to Sandy’s Questions for Chapter 8 (Daenerys) -- Chapter 11 (Jaime)

23. Do you think Ser Jorah is right not to trust Whitebeard? (Just an observation, since there was so little of Dany in the previous book, I liked how there was a paragraph recapping what she’s been through.)
I don’t know who to trust and who not to trust in this book, but I’m thinking, for the most part, that Ser Jorah is right. I’ll qualify that with saying that he may be just a tad jealous.

24. We now know that Dany enjoys feeding her dragons in the nude (ha ha!). What a visual: the dragons roasting their own meat! That would come in handy at barbecues. Did you expect Ser Jorah to make a move on Dany? Do you think she will accept his proposal? I think she will be like Queen Elizabeth I and be only wed to her country.
I was wondering, what with all that bare skin flashing, if Ser Jorah was going to act on his urges (not that he doesn’t really care for Dany; I think he does love her). What is that expression about cooking a steak in front of a hungry man? I think Ser Jorah is doomed to a long stent of unrequited love. Well, Dany loves him, but I don’t think in “that way.”

25. Sounds like Bran is really getting the hang of using his third eye. I am unclear on why they are traveling beyond the wall. Who are they looking for (a person who can teach Bran)? Do we know specifically? I wish we could see how Rickon and Osha are faring!
I believe there was someone mentioned in one of the first two books, but I can’t remember his name or where he resided.

26. More confusion: Davos believes that Melisandre sent the fire on the battleships, but it was the “wildfire”, right? Or did Melisandre just add to it?
That confused me, too. I didn’t think she had anything to do with it. I didn’t think she was even in the vicinity.

27. Do you think Salladhor Saan betrayed Davos? Will Davos live to get his revenge on Melisandre?
I did wonder! Otherwise, Melisandre is more “all seeing” than realized.

28. Did anyone else think, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” when the Kingslayer was allowed to get on a horse? Even with wrist chains, the man is crafty!
I’ve had that feeling since they set out, LOL! He’s always figuring the odds and thinking of escape.

29. Bit of a digression…in this chapter Elia of Dorne is mentioned (wife of Rhaegar). Does Mance Rayder’s song about the Dornishman’s wife have something to do with her or someone related to her?
Funny you should say that, I went back and re-read those songs. I don’t know!

30. So, we learn that Jaime had almost been betrothed to Lysa Tully (interesting!) and that he joined the Kingsguard because Cersei wanted him too (manipulative b-tch!) Do you think Tywin knew about the twins’ relationship? Is that why he resigned as Hand and took Cersei back to Casterly Rock?
I found that "almost betrothal" quite interesting! As well as Jaime’s reasons for joining the KG. Whoa! I hadn’t thought of that as a reason for Lord Tywin to resign; I figured it was something else (what, I don’t know).

31. Thoughts on Jaime killing the King? Sounds like Aerys wanted Jaime to kill his own father. I am wondering about the plan leading up to the assassination. Jaime is called Kingslayer, but many were in on the plot, no?
King Aerys was crazy and I have to agree with what Laura stated in Post #48 about that. True, Sandy, I think there were many people in on the plot. Maybe Lord Tywin was in on it and that's why he resigned (removing himself from the scene, like Cersei did?).

33) Do you think Tyrion will use the steps in Vary's bedroom to his advantage in the future?
Yes.

34) I'm thinking Shae will be Tyrion's downfall. Anyone else?
While I was reading that whole chapter I kept thinking. "damn I really don't like Shae. Who is she REALLY working for??" I know in the TV series I liked her, she was betrayed differently. In the books, she's kinda all about the gold and jewelry. I don't think she cares for Tyrion at all.

35) Cersei is such a tease. She is doing what she told Sansa she does - bear a different kind of weapon. There is a word for women like her.
I can think of a phrase my sister and I use for woman like Cersei...C U Next Tuesday!

36) Here's a thought, after pondering Lisa's thoughts about Tyrion's dad, could he have tried to get rid of his son by framing him? Could he have sent the assassin after Bran? Maybe! He is cold and calculating! and who knows..he did keep Cersei for an awfully long time..for himself!

37) What do you think of Arya's new "friends"? Should she have revealed herself to Harwin? Who the heck is he with? NO she shouldn't have. I'm not really sure how I feel about the men in the woods.

38) I think Robb just signed his own death warrant. He did a stupid thing. Anyone else agree?
See his chapters were interesting , but now I'm like, "Crap, this isn't gonna end well."

39) Gah! Who the heck is Tansy and do we really care?
YES, we care! I can't wait to find out this whole part in the story.

41) Jon is having problems of a feminine nature. Talk about blackmail. Any thoughts on this? Think wedding bells are in Jon's future?
I kinda like Ygritte. She reminds me of Osha.

What does everone think of Tormund? I find myself wanting to listen to his tall tales.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Answers to Questions for Chapter 8 (Daenerys) - Chapter 11 (Jaime)

23.Do you think Ser Jorah is right not to trust Whitebeard? (Just an observation, since there was so little of Dany in the previous book, I liked how there was a paragraph recapping what she’s been through.)

This was an interesting question. I feel that maybe Ser Jorah will betray Dany for love. Just a feeling I'm getting. As to whether or not to trust Whitebeard? I'm not sure yet, but she should be wary.

24.We now know that Dany enjoys feeding her dragons in the nude (ha ha!). What a visual: the dragons roasting their own meat! That would come in handy at barbecues. Did you expect Ser Jorah to make a move on Dany? Do you think she will accept his proposal? I think she will be like Queen Elizabeth I and be only wed to her country.

Loved your BBQ thought. That would be some party. I think Dany is vulnerable right now. She went from a relationship with her husband where they had relations every night to now being celibate. I don't know if she can do casual either.

25.Sounds like Bran is really getting the hang of using his third eye. I am unclear on why they are traveling beyond the wall. Who are they looking for (a person who can teach Bran)? Do we know specifically? I wish we could see how Rickon and Osha are faring!

Since they talked of crows I'm torn between the people Jon is with and those at the Wall. I wish we knew what was going on with Osha and Rickon too.

26.More confusion: Davos believes that Melisandre sent the fire on the battleships, but it was the “wildfire”, right? Or did Melisandre just add to it?

I think Melisandre had nothing to do with the fire. Davos is just upset and blames her. She freaked him out with her shadow baby and so she is the one he puts the blame on.

27.Do you think Salladhor Saan betrayed Davos? Will Davos live to get his revenge on Melisandre?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure Davos is powerful enough to get to Melisandre.

28.Did anyone else think, “I ‘ve got a bad feeling about this” when the Kingslayer was allowed to get on a horse? Even with wrist chains, the man is crafty!

I think he'll keep in line because he knows Brienne will not let anything happen to him. Besides once they reach the castle I'm sure he'll "reward" *cough betray cough* her. She'll end up a prisoner.

29.Bit of a digression…in this chapter Elia of Dorne is mentioned (wife of Rhaegar). Does Mance Rayder’s song about the Dornishman’s wife have something to do with her or someone related to her?

There must be something significant with this song. We keep hearing it. I just don't know how it fits.

30.So, we learn that Jaime had almost been betrothed to Lysa Tully (interesting!) and that he joined the Kingsguard because Cersei wanted him too (manipulative b-tch!) Do you think Tywin knew about the twins’ relationship? Is that why he resigned as Hand and took Cersei back to Casterly Rock?

I don't know if Tywin knew or not. He doesn't seem happy about the rumors though.

31.Thoughts on Jaime killing the King? Sounds like Aerys wanted Jaime to kill his own father. I am wondering about the plan leading up to the assassination. Jaime is called Kingslayer, but many were in on the plot, no?

Jaime states the King was mad as a hatter. Could it be he just wanted him off the throne? Viseries (I think I misspelled the name - Dany's brother) seemed to have inherited that madness maybe. Could Jamie have just been wanting to remove someone from the throne who shouldn't be there? Did he have a hand in getting rid of the King's family?

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapter 16 (Sansa) - Chapter 19 (Tyrion)

43) Should Sansa have left with Ser Dontos?

44) Well this answers my previous question - Arya should not have trusted the band of theives. Do you think Gendry will come to her aid?

45) Like how Sam managed to rise to the occasion and kill the Other. Interesting thing about the obsidian. Weren't the arrowheads and things that Jon found in the buried box also made of obsidian?

46) Looks like the black brothers are no more. Those left are fleeing for their lives. I don't think we know exactly who all survived. Sounded like Sam sent messages when they were first attacked and then let the rest of the birds free. Wonder what those who were warned will think? Do you think they'll believe the Others have returned?

47)Thoughts about Sansa marrying Tyrion? She will freak. Anyone see this one coming?

48) Cersei being forced to marry? That is precious. I think her father is looking to punish her. Do you think she'll marry or refuse?

49) Tywin knows what Robb did. Anyone else thinking we'll be seeing an end to Robb's reign?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s Answers to Lisarenee’s Questions for Chapter 12 (Tyrion) - Chapter 15 (Sansa)

32) Laughed at Varys dressing up as a woman.
That’s Mrs. Varys to you! LOL!

33) Do you think Tyrion will use the steps in Varys’ bedroom to his advantage in the future?
Definitely!

34) I'm thinking Shae will be Tyrion's downfall. Anyone else?
Ditto. She seems smart in some ways, though she doesn’t seem to be getting the bigger picture; is she a little dense?

35) Cersei is such a tease. She is doing what she told Sansa she does - bear a different kind of weapon. There is a word for women like her.
You mean her teasing Ser Osmund’s member like that? Yes. You nailed (pun intended) her character perfectly.

36) Here's a thought, after pondering Lisa's thoughts about Tyrion's dad, could he have tried to get rid of his son by framing him? Could he have sent the assassin after Bran?
You think Lord Tywin is behind the “bad press” Tyrion is getting and hired Ser Mandon Moore? Hmmm. You might have something there, Lisarenee! Whoa, if so, Tyrion’s going to be pissed. But, now Grand Maester Pycelle is back. He’s going to be looking for vengeance too. Drat!

37) What do you think of Arya's new "friends"? Should she have revealed herself to Harwin? Who the heck is he with?
I don’t like these guys. They are outlaws in the making – even if their plans have not yet come to fruition. Nope. She should not have revealed herself, though my throat did get a little chocked up there for her when she recognized Harwin; she so misses home, hearth and family. Can’t wait for Hot Pie’s reaction, LOL!

38) I think Robb just signed his own death warrant. He did a stupid thing. Anyone else agree?
I agree. This cannot bode well. Grey Wind needs to be near him. So, so stupid!

39) Gah! Who the heck is Tansy and do we really care?
Beats the poo out of me. I care, I do. I just wonder how long it will take for her identity to be revealed. I mean, shoot, Martin still haven’t come right out and said who killed Lord Arryn (though I know the Nut Bunny did it!) and we are into the third book!

40) Seems like we have a bit of a problem communicating our ideas in Kingdom Robb. Wonder how Robb's uncle likes being bossed around by his nephew?
I knew Uncle Edmure was mucking it up, I just didn’t know how. Yeah, I wonder why they didn’t explain it to him. Did they feel that didn’t have to? He should just follow blindly? Or was it that communication was only via ravens, and poor at that? I can’t remember. I don’t think Uncle Edmure was too uncomfortable being ruled by King Robb, but now he might get defensive.

41) Jon is having problems of a feminine nature. Talk about blackmail. Any thoughts on this? Think wedding bells are in Jon's future?
Whoa! A bit of a surprise, that! Nope, I don’t think Jon Snow will marry Ygritte, but what do I know?

42) Mammoths and Giants! How fun. Wonder if the Mammoth is a Sigil of any houses?
They were pretty neat, especially the mammoths. I wouldn’t be surprised if the mammoths are put on someone’s.

I feel I'm forgetting something. If anyone wants to add a question let me know.
Nope, I think you covered it all nicely. :)

#23 - From A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin Three treasons will you know… (blood, gold, love)
So, okay, I have to ask: who was the "blood"? Viserys, Mirri Maz Duur, Xaro Xhoan Daxos or someone yet to come? Because that makes all the difference in the world, doesn't it? If Xaro Xhoan Daxos was "gold", then "love" might be next. Goodness, I never would have thought it of Ser Jorah, but then I'm not clear on his past women's troubles; he may be a little twisted there.
#25 - "I wish we knew what was going on with Osha and Rickon too."
Ditto!
#27 - I think you are right, he's not strong enough; but, it's a shame.
#28 - "She'll end up a prisoner."
Eeek! What?! Oh, no!
#30 - You know, the more I think on it, I believe Lord Tywin has lost it mentally since he believes Jaime is lost to him.
#31 - "Did he have a hand in getting rid of the King's family?"
I've been trying to figure this out too. We know what it did to Bran, but that might have been "for love". Does he have it in him to smash a toddler and baby's head in? Or is that baby Jon Snow??

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay Answers to Lisarenee’s Questions for Chapter 16 (Sansa) - Chapter 19 (Tyrion)

43) Should Sansa have left with Ser Dontos?
No. I didn’t trust him. Plus, look how that information leaked about the Tyrells’ “designs” on her.

44) Well this answers my previous question - Arya should not have trusted the band of thieves. Do you think Gendry will come to her aid?
I hope so. But, I doubt it. At least not right away.

45) Like how Sam managed to rise to the occasion and kill the Other. Interesting thing about the obsidian. Weren't the arrowheads and things that Jon found in the buried box also made of obsidian?
I did like it! Yes, those arrowheads were made of obsidian.

I don’t think they will believe it until they see them for themselves. Also stupid of Lord Tywin to think that the Lannisters won’t have to fight them. Idiot.

47) Thoughts about Sansa marrying Tyrion? She will freak. Anyone see this one coming?
Actually, I think this would be a good marriage. However, I know Sansa will freak and I don’t think Tyrion will bed her unless she is willing. And I don't think she will be willing anytime soon -- if ever.

48) Cersei being forced to marry? That is precious. I think her father is looking to punish her. Do you think she'll marry or refuse?
Whoa! What a shocker! Her father is a such a pr!ck. If she marries, she will only do so if she thinks she can control or manipulate Willas Tyrell.

49) Tywin knows what Robb did. Anyone else thinking we'll be seeing an end to Robb's reign?
Oh, yeah. Sad, but true. Hey what did everyone think of all that info about Queen Jeyne Westerling Stark’s grandmother a Maegi? Also, I didn’t get the significance of Castamere, did you?

message 64: by Laura (new)

Laura 47) Thoughts about Sansa marrying Tyrion? She will freak. Anyone see this one coming?

Okay, all last book when Tyrion was so nice to Sansa and everyone was wondering if he was going to help her or if she was going to ever trust him that he was just being nice, I was biting my lip furiously!

I knew you all were such Tyrion fans and that everyone felt so bad for Sansa, so I agree with Lisa Kay, that this is a pretty decent marriage, if only Sansa would look at it that way.

I hadn't seen this marriage coming when I read the book, but it totally makes sense. Instead, I thought they were going to hold onto Sansa until the war was done and then marry her off or promise her to someone who they needed to bring to their side.

32) Laughed at Vary's dressing up as a woman.

Me too! Took me a minute to figure out what was going on.

33) Do you think Tyrion will use the steps in Vary's bedroom to his advantage in the future?
Yes, perhaps to escape?

34) I'm thinking Shae will be Tyrion's downfall. Anyone else?
It's sure looking that way.

35) Cersei is such a tease. She is doing what she told Sansa she does - bear a different kind of weapon. There is a word for women like her.
I don't like Cersei by any means, but I think she uses whatever power she has to escape male tyranny. Women are treated like property, so I suppose I have to sympathize with her a tiny bit. Still, she has made many decisions I don't agree with!

36) Here's a thought, after pondering Lisa's thoughts about Tyrion's dad, could he have tried to get rid of his son by framing him? Could he have sent the assassin after Bran?
That is an excellent theory!

37) What do you think of Arya's new "friends"? Should she have revealed herself to Harwin? Who the heck is he with?
I always thought she should have revealed herself back at Harrenhall when the Stark flag was hoisted. Obviously she didn't because she sensed she was in danger...with that in mind I have no idea why she decided to finally reveal herself to Harwin.

38) I think Robb just signed his own death warrant. He did a stupid thing. Anyone else agree?
Yes. It seems to me that the Freys are better (more powerful) allies than the Westerlings. I suppose it's noble to marry the girl he deflowered, but still, he's the KING for goodness' sake!

39) Gah! Who the heck is Tansy and do we really care?
I do care but I am tired of being teased!

40) Seems like we have a bit of a problem communicating our ideas in Kingdom Robb. Wonder how Robb's uncle likes being bossed around by his nephew?
In a military situation, it's crucial to follow orders and Edmure didn't. I hope we don't see a rebellion on his part later!

41) Jon is having problems of a feminine nature. Talk about blackmail. Any thoughts on this? Think wedding bells are in Jon's future?
Doesn't seem like this society would require a wedding, although Jon is determined not to father a bastard...so, maybe there will be wedding bells after all!

42) Mammoths and Giants! How fun. Wonder if the Mammoth is a Sigil of any houses?
I don't recall, but it wouldn't be surprising.

43) Should Sansa have left with Ser Dontos?

Probably not.

44) Well this answers my previous question - Arya should not have trusted the band of theives. Do you think Gendry will come to her aid?
Isn't Gendry with them? Or did they only take Arya? I know Hot Pie stayed behind to bake.

45) Like how Sam managed to rise to the occasion and kill the Other. Interesting thing about the obsidian. Weren't the arrowheads and things that Jon found in the buried box also made of obsidian?
That was very interesting and probably very important that there is a weapon that can kill the Others. Especially given that it was the self-styled coward who did the killing.

I think the first messages got through that they were being attacked, but not the messages that all was lost. If they don't believe it they will have proof soon enough, I'm afraid. I wonder how this will affect the war. Will everyone band together to fight the others? Can Dragons kill the Others?

47)Thoughts about Sansa marrying Tyrion? She will freak. Anyone see this one coming?
I did not even remotely see this coming but what a clever plot point! This will have to be prevented somehow. I am not sure how, though.

48) Cersei being forced to marry? That is precious. I think her father is looking to punish her. Do you think she'll marry or refuse?
I'm not sure if it's punishment or just Tywin showin her who's boss. I think she will not have a choice in the matter.

49) Tywin knows what Robb did. Anyone else thinking we'll be seeing an end to Robb's reign?
I don't think Robb will go down without a fight. I am hoping the Starks prevail in the end, but we have many more books to go, don't we?

Jaime states the King was mad as a hatter. Could it be he just wanted him off the throne? Viseries (I think I misspelled the name - Dany's brother) seemed to have inherited that madness maybe. Could Jamie have just been wanting to remove someone from the throne who shouldn't be there? Did he have a hand in getting rid of the King's family?

I think the whole crew (Starks/Baratheons/Lannisters) were in on killing all the Targaryens.

Laura Sandy wrote "I think the whole crew (Starks/Baratheons/Lannisters) were in on killing all the Targaryens.

The thing was, the war was the Targaryens vs. the Starks and Baratheons. The Lannisters waited until the end of the war when Tywin realized that it would benefit him more to get rid of Aerys.

I think that final plot, to pretend the Lannisters were coming to aid Aerys and then have Jaime kill those guarding the king and the king too while the Lannisters turned on the rest of the king's men, was all Tywin's idea. The Starks and Baratheons hadn't been in on that (I don't think).

At least, it seems more like it would be Tywin's idea than Ned or Robert's. Robert was all about brute strength, not being sneaky. And Ned was too honorable to pull something like that.

And I definitely don't think it was Jaime's initiative. He was doing his father's bidding. He might have wanted Aerys off the throne, but I don't think he ever would have acted if Tywin hadn't told him to (and plus, the Starks and Baratheons were starting to win the war since Robert had just killed Rhaegar).

Laura I'm glad it clarified and wasn't just rambling! I never seem to be able to explain things succinctly.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments It's great! I didn't realize (or remember?) that Tywin chose a side at the last minute. Now that the Lannisters hold King's Landing, it makes sense that he was after the throne the whole time, although I am not sure why Tywin didn't take the throne after Aerys was killed. Did Tywin realize he couldn't beat Robert's army?

message 74: by Laura (new)

Laura Probably. Robert's army consisted of bannermen from the Baratheons, Starks and Arryns.

Plus, Robert actually had the best claim to the throne. The Baratheons are descended from a bastard half-brother of one of the Targaryens like 300 years ago. So Robert has some Targaryen blood. Although, if you're starting a rebellion, I don't think it should really matter who has the best claim. I mean, you're already going against the rules of succession, who cares at that point?

Kellyflower | 248 comments I really hate that I'm feeling sorry for Jamie..I mean I don't want him to not get punished for throwing Bran out of the window, but I'm just seeing him in such a different light.

I'd like to add that I agree with Tyrion when he said Cersei should not be doing her father's bidding. He should be listening to HER, SHE is QUEEN! it's funny how she used her "balls" before but now when it comes to her father she hides. I wonder why that is..

message 76: by Laura (new)

Laura While, yes, I'm a little surprised that Cersei didn't have the same attitude as Tyrion that Tywin should listen to her now. I think I sort of get it. Tywin is the only person who Cersei truly looks up to. Everything that she's ever done, she did because she thought Tywin would do it (or that he would approve).

Knowing that Tywin is Cersei's role model sort of makes you understand why she's such a callous, heartless bitch.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Questions for Chapter 20 (Catelyn) – Chapter 23 (Daenerys)

50) Well Martin didn’t sugarcoat it, did he? That was quite a descriptive passage of a brutal assassination, IMHO. Did you know who the two young boys were before it was revealed?

51) Book quote: “How can it be treason to kill Lannisters, when it is not treason to free them?” Whoa! No cut-and-paste caricatures here. Did you think this arguing point, made by Karstark, had any validity?

52) Did you believe that King Robb would hold Karstark as a hostage or kill him? Were you surprised he wielded the poleaxe himself? He has a lot of his father in him, does he not? Will this bring about his downfall?

53) Book quote: “Bowmen are fearless so long as they can hide behind walls and shoot at you from afar, but if you come at them, they run.” Seems Jaime is not above teaching Brienne. Comments on this and their forest fight scene?

54) Jaime thinks of returning Sansa, for his own amusement, doesn’t believe Brienne deserves gang-raping, and wants her to stretch the truth about her Sapphire Isle to save her hide. Does he have any redeeming qualities? Sounds like the “methage” Vargo Hoat would send Lord Tywin is a body part of Jaime’s. Any idea what part world make him scream like that?

55) I have long been trying to figure out whose side Lord Beric Dondarrion, of Blackhaven, is on. He was sent out by Lord Stark, when he was Hand to the King, to capture Ser Gregor Clegane. Now Arya finds out Lord Beric was hanged, but Thoros revived him. It appears he is out for himself now – well, and the people in his vicinity – correct?

56) Poor Arya, she (and me) doesn’t know who has switched sides – or when – in all these battles, assassinations, and political power plays. Are you keeping them all straight?

57) I think Gendry thought Arya, after a fierce scrubbing and trimming, looked pretty appealing and didn’t know how to handle it. You? I think this has been asked before, but do you think there's potential for a romantic relationship between Arya and Gendry? Talk about a one-two punch. Now they would have some clout, correct?

58) Was I the only one smiling over Arya’s comment about her Needle work?

59) The slaver, Kraznys mo Nakloz, said “whore” one too many times (IMHO); think he will pay for that bit of jackassery?

60) Book Quote: Tap, tap, tap. Who the hell is Whitebeard?

61) Were you impressed that Dany didn’t consign her “handling” by Irri as a dream, nor her as a bedslave, and told her so?

62) Book quote: Dany did not turn. She could not bear to look at him just now. If she did, she might well slap him again. Or cry. Or kiss him. And never know which was right and which was wrong and which was maddess. So far a kiss and a slap; Ser Jorah did stir up some emotions in Dany. Comments.

63) Man-oh-man! Dany is smack-dab in the middle of a dilemma. We know how she detests slavery. Whatever will her decision be?

Laura Laura’s Answers to Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapter 20 (Catelyn) – Chapter 23 (Daenerys)

51) Book quote: “How can it be treason to kill Lannisters, when it is not treason to free them?” Whoa! No cut-and-paste caricatures here. Did you think this arguing point, made by Karstark, had any validity?

I don’t really think this arguing point was valid (because they were CHILDREN), but it made me really nervous that Karstark was so mad to go through with this and argue so vehemently with Robb. It also made me so angry at Catelyn because how dare she just let Jaime go and not expect it to seriously eff things up? I hate how she undermines her son and then wonders why he doesn’t want her around. He’s supposed to be king, dammit, and he can’t keep his own mother under control!

52) Did you believe that King Robb would hold Karstark as a hostage or kill him? Were you surprised he wielded the poleaxe himself? He has a lot of his father in him, does he not? Will this bring about his downfall?

I was surprised he chose to kill Karstark, but I don’t know what options he had. Although, he should have punished Catelyn somewhat (even if it was just for show) so he wasn’t being so one sided. I mean, Jaime killed the man’s sons. He’s gonna be upset. I’m glad they showed Robb carrying out the sentence, because it shows that although Ned died more than a book ago, Robb isn’t forgetting why he’s there and what started the war.

His penis. Lol. No, not really, I just couldn’t help myself.

I think this whole chapter was GRRM’s way of saying “This is how I’m going to make you like this character you spent two books hating.” Jaime isn’t necessarily a horrible person (although, Bran!). I think he doesn’t think things through all the time. But maybe some of his niceness is stemming from his super fun and humbling stay at Riverrun.

Beric hasn't completed his last order, so he's doing the best he can. The Mountain's men are all raping and pillaging and the poor common folk are suffering. So I think Beric has taken it upon himself to protect them as best he can until he can complete his duty and capture the Mountain and end his rein of terror.

I hope they get together and get married and live happily ever after while riding around the country at night and killing jerks and Lannisters, lol. But I definitely think Gendry was uncomfortable seeing Arya as a girl. And not just a girl, but a highborn girl. I think he’s becoming acutely aware of the fact that Arya is someone, whereas he’s just a bastard and a blacksmith apprentice.

59) The slaver, Kraznys mo Nakloz, said “whore” one too many times (IMHO); think he will pay for that bit of jackassery?

On the one hand, yes, I want him to pay for it. But on the other, GRRM likes to remind us that not all jackasses get what they should. I mean, Joffrey is still king and Cersei is still in charge, but meanwhile all of Tyrion’s hard work has been undone and Ned Stark is dead.

62) Book quote: Dany did not turn. She could not bear to look at him just now. If she did, she might well slap him again. Or cry. Or kiss him. And never know which was right and which was wrong and which was madness. So far a kiss and a slap; Ser Jorah did stir up some emotions in Dany. Comments.

I liked the relationship between Ser Jorah and Dany before. I’m very sad to see it change.

Kellyflower | 248 comments Laura,
I think we're on the same boat with the answers to this last installment of questions.

I couldn't agree more about questions #54. Here we are, hating the Lannisters, then slowly one becomes most of our favorite Character(Tyrion), and NOW we're feeling a little bad for another one(Jamie)!
I think they've cut off his hand or arm or something that is gonna make him less useful. Think about it. He's this great Knight, what do knight's need? something to hold their swords and shields with? wouldn't be almost like getting his penis caught off? He'll be pretty much useless in his father's eyes, not so sure about how Cersei will feel about it. Plus, didn't they say they laid his arm down and pull on his chain? I took that as they were cutting off his hand..

Seriously I haven't liked Catelyn since she called John Snow a bastard and didn't want him saying goodbye to Bran.

I'm also extremely sad to see Jorah & Dany's relationship to change. I REALLY don't want them getting together. (sorta like how I feel about Booth & Bones getting together. I want to think about it,see them giving each other the eyes, but it never really happens!)
I think in the end Jorah is gonna betray her for Love. (damn him!!)

I was very upset with the whole chapter about the unsullied. I mean they had their penises chopped off! Made to kill infants, strangle their own puppies?
BUT at the same time...these are probably the army she really needs to protect her & her people.
I'm still really bothered about the infant killings.

Ugh, I know. I have some serious Catelyn hate. I actually hate her more than Cersei, because Catelyn is supposed to be one of the good guys! 50) Well Martin didn’t sugarcoat it, did he? That was quite a descriptive passage of a brutal assassination, IMHO. Did you know who the two young boys were before it was revealed?

No, I had no idea. So sad, and so cowardly of Karstark!

51) Book quote: “How can it be treason to kill Lannisters, when it is not treason to free them?” Whoa! No cut-and-paste caricatures here. Did you think this arguing point, made by Karstark, had any validity?

Technically, Catelyn didn't free Jaime. She sent him back to Kings Landing under guard to be swapped for Sansa. True, she didn't have permission to do this, but still...Karstark's actions were far worse IMO. There are certain rules to war (aren't there?) and killing little boys certainly falls outside the parameters.

52) Did you believe that King Robb would hold Karstark as a hostage or kill him? Were you surprised he wielded the poleaxe himself? He has a lot of his father in him, does he not? Will this bring about his downfall?

This scene reminded me of the beginning of GOT when Ned killed the man who fled the Night's Watch. I wasn't surprised because this is what his father would have done. He is very much like Ned, however I hoped he has learn something from his father's "be noble at all costs" mentality. I don't know that this will be his downfall but surely it will bring a lot of trouble.

53) Book quote: “Bowmen are fearless so long as they can hide behind walls and shoot at you from afar, but if you come at them, they run.” Seems Jaime is not above teaching Brienne. Comments on this and their forest fight scene?

I kept wondering if Jaime really meant to kill her. I thought he did but I still don't know. Now that they are both captives and "on the same side," I think that his knowledge of her abilities will help them escape.

I fear you are right. I haven't read up to see what happened. What I HOPE is that they chopped the chain and not a body part. It's probably a finger though. :-(

You have summed it up nicely. Sounds like he is not taking sides but is keeping his own counsel. As someone who was loyal to Ned, I hope that he would return Arya to her mother.

56) Poor Arya, she (and me) doesn’t know who has switched sides – or when – in all these battles, assassinations, and political power plays. Are you keeping them all straight?

No, I am not! I just keep hoping I will get hints here and there. At least that is not robbing my enjoyment of the story. :-)

Well....Arya is only 10 years old so I just think eeeewwwwwww when I think of Gendry finding her attractive. I don't have a problem with them getting together in 3- 4 years.

58) Was I the only one smiling over Arya’s comment about her Needle work?

Nope, I was smiling too!

59) The slaver, Kraznys mo Nakloz, said “whore” one too many times (IMHO); think he will pay for that bit of jackassery?

Perhaps someday. These were quite funny passages, though.

60) Book Quote: Tap, tap, tap. Who the hell is Whitebeard?

I have no earthly clue!

61) Were you impressed that Dany didn’t consign her “handling” by Irri as a dream, nor her as a bedslave, and told her so?

Dany is very direct and honest, both admirable qualities.

Comments.

Just some rambling comments: Dany is what, 15? Look at all she has been through. She hasn't had a childhood. She was forced to grow up and be a wife at 13. She is a Queen who has gained and lost quite a bit. She is at war with herself. She must be a strong leader, but she can't help her emotions and must work very hard to control them. She was so saddened by the thought of dead infants and puppies, but she couldn't show this. I'm sure part of her would like to give in for a night of passion with Jorah, but the consequences would be too much.

63) Man-oh-man! Dany is smack-dab in the middle of a dilemma. We know how she detests slavery. Whatever will her decision be?

I think she should buy the slaves then free them and give them the opportunity to serve her as sellswords.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments I don't really hate Catelyn, but she's not my favorite character. She has lost her husband, and thinks her youngest sons are dead. She has no idea where Arya is, and she knows Sansa is in grave danger. I think she had an emotional meltdown when she let Jaime out of the dungeon. It was wrong for her to take matters into her own hands, that's for sure. I feel sorry for her in many ways, but I can't forget her bad treatment of Jon Snow.

Jaime has many good qualities that we are now seeing but we can't forget how he hurt Bran.

Cersei has done some terrible things, but she's still being treated like property, and she certainly didn't want Ned to be killed.

Yes, the author is making it difficult for us to pick a side and stay there!

No. I was shocked.

51) Book quote: “How can it be treason to kill Lannisters, when it is not treason to free them?” Whoa! No cut-and-paste caricatures here. Did you think this arguing point, made by Karstark, had any validity?

Yes and No. Yes, Catelyn should have been punished. What he did, however, was worse.

52) Did you believe that King Robb would hold Karstark as a hostage or kill him? Were you surprised he wielded the poleaxe himself? He has a lot of his father in him, does he not? Will this bring about his downfall?

We are seeing the last embers of a dying spark. I can't see him bouncing back from this one.

53) Book quote: “Bowmen are fearless so long as they can hide behind walls and shoot at you from afar, but if you come at them, they run.” Seems Jaime is not above teaching Brienne. Comments on this and their forest fight scene?

I enjoyed the fight scene and I think Jamie is starting to like Brienne. I am starting to see Jamie in a different light. Kellyflower, I'm with you on my opinion of Jamie is changing, but I do still dislike what he did to Bran.

Now Arya finds out Lord Beric was hanged, but Thoros revived him. It appears he is out for himself now – well, and the people in his vicinity – correct?

After Lord Stark died he probably felt he'd be killed like everyone else. The question is what will he do with Arya?

56) Poor Arya, she (and me) doesn’t know who has switched sides – or when – in all these battles, assassinations, and political power plays. Are you keeping them all straight?

Trying, but it's confusing.

I think this has been asked before, but do you think there's potential for a romantic relationship between Arya and Gendry? Talk about a one-two punch. Now they would have some clout, correct?

I was thinking the same thing. They were cute, but at this point I think Arya doesn't care for boys, at least not in a romantic way.

58) Was I the only one smiling over Arya’s comment about her Needle work?

I liked it too.

59) The slaver, Kraznys mo Nakloz, said “whore” one too many times (IMHO); think he will pay for that bit of jackassery?

I do.

I was wondering the same thing!

61) Were you impressed that Dany didn’t consign her “handling” by Irri as a dream, nor her as a bedslave, and told her so?

Yes. I guess Martin wouldn't be happy until we had a girl on girl encounter. Is there anything we still have yet to see? I'm sure it'll end up in here somewhere before it's all said and done.

62) Book quote: Dany did not turn. She could not bear to look at him just now. If she did, she might well slap him again. Or cry. Or kiss him. And never know which was right and which was wrong and which was maddness. So far a kiss and a slap; Ser Jorah did stir up some emotions in Dany. Comments.

Personally I'd slap him again.

63) Man-oh-man! Dany is smack-dab in the middle of a dilemma. We know how she detests slavery. Whatever will her decision be?

My thought when I read this was that she'd buy them then set them free and gain a very loyal group of soldiers.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapter 24 (Bran) - Chapter 27 (Daenerys)

64) We finally have a Bran chapter where something useful is found. Yay! Do you think the group will continue to the wall? What do you think they'll find?

65) The story the of the Knight and the Laughing Tree - Could it have been about Lyanna and how the Starks became friends with the Reeds (did I get everyone straight?)?

66) Think Davos will allow himself to become a shadow baby? Did she make a good argument for herself? Is Melisandre's offer of pleasure enough to sway him? I cringed at that one. Can't imagine anyone wanting to close and personal with her after seeing her birth a shadow baby. Talk about a mood spoiler. Gah!

67) Do you think Stannis is still alive? No one has seen him for awhile.

68) Now we find Stannis' Hand has been imprisoned for treason. Do you think it's treason?

69) Lord Alester has rings. Could he be the mysterious man Arya saw in the first book? I'm not sure the rest of the description fits.

70) Putting on my fortune telling hat (or would that be scarves) and predicting that Ygritte will die and Jon will step into the role his destiny was supposed to take. Any thoughts? I agree with whoever said they don't like Ygritte. I don't either, and I don't know why.

71) Did anyone else wonder at one time if Ygritte, at the beginning, was being used as a tool to secure Jon's loyalty? After this chapter, however, I really believe she loves him.

72) Did you get upset when Dany offered up Dragos?

73) Did you see the Dragon attack coming? I wondered, but wasn't sure how it'd play out.

74) Thoughts on Dany's statement,"Justice...that's what Kings are for."

75) What did you think of the warning and who do you think the woman was who uttered it? I'm thinking Melisandre.

76) Who is your favorite character at this point?

Laura Laura’s Answers to Questions for Chapter 24 (Bran) - Chapter 27 (Daenerys)

Gah!

Davos is a pretty simple guy and I think he’s probably the easiest character to figure out. So no, I don’t think he’d ever be swayed by Melisandre. He has his beliefs and he sticks by them. I love that about him.

(Although can one become a shadow baby? I tend to skim when Melisandre starts spouting her nonsense).

67) Do you think Stannis is still alive? No one has seen him for awhile.

A bigger deal would have been made if Stannis was dead. He’s just laying low, trying to figure out what to do next.

68) Now we find Stannis' Hand has been imprisoned for treason. Do you think it's treason?

I think it could be considered. I also think it depends on how strict the king is and Stannis is pretty damn strict. He really sticks to his guns and doesn’t appreciate anyone giving him any less than he thinks is owed to him.

70) Putting on my fortune telling hat (or would that be scarves) and predicting that Ygritte will die and Jon will step into the role his destiny was supposed to take. Any thoughts? I agree with whoever said they don't like Ygritte. I don't either, and I don't know why.

I don’t … dislike Ygritte. But I don’t like Jon’s story with her. I think it’s because it worries me that maybe he’ll turn his back on the Night’s Watch. But being in his head sort of reminds me how much like Ned he is. Ned never would have turned his back on the Night’s Watch. Jon’s just as noble as Ned. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself!

71) Did anyone else wonder at one time if Ygritte, at the beginning, was being used as a tool to secure Jon's loyalty? After this chapter, however, I really believe she loves him.

I thought she was actually interested in keeping him safe because he spared her life. I always thought she was doing it of her own volition. If it was part of a plan by the wildings then it had too many holes.

72) Did you get upset when Dany offered up Dragos?

Drogon? No. See below.

73) Did you see the Dragon attack coming? I wondered, but wasn't sure how it'd play out.

I knew she had to have something up her sleeve. She wouldn’t risk giving one of the dragons up to Xaro in exchange for ships. So I didn’t really think she would just hand one over (to a guy she clearly dislikes) in exchange for soldiers. Think about it. One dragon is probably worth all of those soldiers and then some in battle. (Especially a grown dragon)

74) Thoughts on Dany's statement,"Justice...that's what Kings are for."

Well, it clearly explains why she does the things she does. I wonder though if she would think this way had Aerys lived and she grew up in King’s Landing. That might have completely changed the way she thought about things. But on the other hand Rhaegar was supposedly a pretty decent guy. Even Ned sort of admired him (minus the whole, "kidnapped Lyanna" thing).

76) Who is your favorite character at this point?

Arya hands down. She gets into the craziest messes and somehow manages to remain awesome. I also really like Gendry (probably through his connection to Arya). But Sansa is a close second, because of her character growth.

64) We finally have a Bran chapter where something useful is found. Yay! Do you think the group will continue to the wall? What do you think they'll find?
I don’t know as I’m still trying to figure out if they are headed to the same section where Jon is. I think not, as it is a big muther. I hope they don’t find Others!

65) The story the of the Knight and the Laughing Tree - Could it have been about Lyanna and how the Starks became friends with the Reeds (did I get everyone straight?)?
That is the same thing I was wondering. I think it might be.

66) Think Davos will allow himself to become a shadow baby? Did she make a good argument for herself? Is Melisandre's offer of pleasure enough to sway him? I cringed at that one. Can't imagine anyone wanting to get close and personal with her after seeing her birth a shadow baby. Talk about a mood spoiler. Gah!
I hope Davos doesn’t cave, and I don’t think he will, unless she casts a spell over him. Her argument wasn’t good, in my book. I was cringing right along with you! Double gah!

67) Do you think Stannis is still alive? No one has seen him for a while.
Define “alive”. I bet she has him catatonic somewhere.

68) Now we find Stannis' Hand has been imprisoned for treason. Do you think it's treason?
This is a tricky one to answer. I want to say, yes, it is treason. And yet, I can’t blame Lord Alester for wanting what he feels is best for his king and kingdom. That, and knowing what little I know about Melisande. He was a little skewed in thinking about hooking Shireen up with Tommen.

69) Lord Alester has rings. Could he be the mysterious man Arya saw in the first book? I'm not sure the rest of the description fits.
Oh good Lord! I forgot about that. We discussed this b/f didn’t we? Or did I just think it in book 2? Yes, to both the possibility and the wrong fit. When he was first dragged in, I was wondering if Lord Alester was a spy of some kind, come to find out what was on Davos’s mind. What if he is someone in disguise?

70) Putting on my fortune telling hat (or would that be scarves) and predicting that Ygritte will die and Jon will step into the role his destiny was supposed to take. Any thoughts? I agree with whoever said they don't like Ygritte. I don't either, and I don't know why.
I don’t know if she will die, or if something will happen to separate them. I’m still neutral on her, but you ladies could be right.

71) Did anyone else wonder at one time if Ygritte, at the beginning, was being used as a tool to secure Jon's loyalty? After this chapter, however, I really believe she loves him.
I didn’t think that, but yet again, you could be right, LOL! Either way, I think she loves him.

72) Did you get upset when Dany offered up Dragos?
I figured she has something planned. I knew she wouldn’t give up Dragos and she secreted away with her bloodriders.

73) Did you see the Dragon attack coming? I wondered, but wasn't sure how it'd play out.
I knew something was up, I just didn’t know when.

74) Thoughts on Dany's statement,"Justice...that's what Kings are for."
I think she’s right!! I am sick of seeing a misuse of power and authority, from the manager of Denny’s to the leader of a country.

75) What did you think of the warning and who do you think the woman was who uttered it? I'm thinking Melisandre.
I thought she was who she was… What! Melisandre! Whoa, dudette. If it is Melisandre, then I’m troubled over these words a bit more. Of course, she might be on Dany’s side; but, ultimately, she’s serving her twisted self, IMHO.

76) Who is your favorite character at this point?
Jon Snow and his wolf, Ghost. Well, all the Stark children, really. After Jon Snow, it is too hard for me to choose. I truly would love to hear what is in King Robb’s head. I’m loving Arya’s adventure, while my heart goes out to Sansa and Bran. As Lisarenee asked, what’s going on with Rickon?

I agree, Sandy. I don't hate her. I think some of the things she thinks/does are insightful, and others TSTL (and she is getting worse, IMHO). She is a "disappointment" to me, from her beginning interaction to Jon Snow.

#51 - Mind Meld!
#52 - You are probably right.

I'm seeing why you and Kellyflower feel this way, LOL! I enjoyed that scene too.
#54 - **hee hee**
#55 - I don't know what Dondarrion will do with Arya. I don't think he'll harm her.
#57 - Ditto.

#66 - "Although can one become a shadow baby?"
Good question.
#70 - "...it worries me that maybe he’ll turn his back on the Night’s Watch..."
I don't think Jon Snow will do this, but what do I know.
#71 - Yes, I think she loves him now and wants him safe.
#73 - Yes, there were a lot of clues to this outcome. She did clearly dislike the slaver.
#74 - Interesting thoughts.
#76 - Yes, Ayra is pretty irresistible.

64) We finally have a Bran chapter where something useful is found. Yay! Do you think the group will continue to the wall? What do you think they'll find?

I think they will continue to the Wall and find a whole lotta trouble.

65) The story the of the Knight and the Laughing Tree - Could it have been about Lyanna and how the Starks became friends with the Reeds (did I get everyone straight?)?

I kept trying to figure it out but it made my head hurt.

Gah!

LOL! Davos equates her with evil. I don't think he will be swayed.

67) Do you think Stannis is still alive? No one has seen him for awhile.

Yes, I think he is alive and in a zombie-like state where he only answers to Melisandre.

68) Now we find Stannis' Hand has been imprisoned for treason. Do you think it's treason?

He probably said something against Melisandre. OK, changing my answer now that I remember what he did...I suppose it is treason because the result of his actions (if followed to the letter) would be that Stannis would no longer be King.

69) Lord Alester has rings. Could he be the mysterious man Arya saw in the first book? I'm not sure the rest of the description fits.

I don't know. I need to go back and read the description in GOT.

70) Putting on my fortune telling hat (or would that be scarves) and predicting that Ygritte will die and Jon will step into the role his destiny was supposed to take. Any thoughts? I agree with whoever said they don't like Ygritte. I don't either, and I don't know why.

Ha ha! Yep, I don't know why I don't like her. Maybe I just don't like her cuddling up to Jon. I have a feeling she will survive for at least this book and the next.

71) Did anyone else wonder at one time if Ygritte, at the beginning, was being used as a tool to secure Jon's loyalty? After this chapter, however, I really believe she loves him.

I didn't wonder that, but that's a very good theory. I do believe she actually cares for him. He's very different from the lot she's used to.

72) Did you get upset when Dany offered up Dragos?

I was shocked, but I hoped it was some sort of trick on her part. I didn't think she would really give up one of her babies, even for an army.

73) Did you see the Dragon attack coming? I wondered, but wasn't sure how it'd play out.

I figured that she was going to trick them somehow, but I didn't see that coming at all. I loved that scene!

74) Thoughts on Dany's statement,"Justice...that's what Kings are for."

After the dragon scene, it seems she was serving justice to the slavetraders.

75) What did you think of the warning and who do you think the woman was who uttered it? I'm thinking Melisandre.

It was creepy. Could have been Melisandre, or could have been Quaithe?

76) Who is your favorite character at this point?

At this moment, my favorite character is Dany.
