What??? Considering the horrible situation he was in, I think he was incredibly resilient. Yes, I most definitely liked the book.
I was just reading a review and it said that he was really whiny and never investigated. It may be due to the fact that she got 50 pages in. :)
Nah, don't mind the reviews- the book is awesome. The author is a gamer and he said his goal was to wtire a book that kids would want to put down a game in order to read.

If I had to complain about the character is that he's almost unbelievably strong and sure of himself, even in the darkest of moments. Klavan's intent was to create a teen action hero who is not not powered by magic but just by his own upbringing and faith. I think he more than succeeded in that part.

He was absolutely NOT a whiner. I loved his character, the strength of his convictions and his ability to think through situations. GREAT book for teens.
Im a teen and he was not whiny because if i was him i would have freaked if i was in a traped room but i have not quite finished it yet so, he may turn out a whiner. :)
Lol. Okay. I didn't think he was but someone mentioned it and I haven't read it in a while. I agree. I loved that he had standards even in that terrible situation. I also think that anybody would be hard pressed to act as calmly as he did.

I think I would have just stopped trying in jail. I would have never had the courage to do the things he did. But then again I think that all the things he went through changed him and made him able to do a lot more than he thought he could. Maybe that would happen to me?

You never know what could make you stronger until it happens and it very well might be in the worse way possible. Good life lesson.
The thing about Charlie was that he had very strong faith, so he never felt alone or desperate enough to give up. It made all the difference in the world for him, more than the physical skills that he had. That's what makes him a truly heroic character and a role model.My favorite part in the whole series is when a bad guy tells Charlie there is no help coming, and he replies, "I'm not alone. I'm never alone." That's all we need to know about who Charlie and his view of life.
Ha. Yup. I guess that would definitely grow my faith. I love that that seemed to be the only thing he was sure about. I think the author kind of intended it to be that way.

Yeah at some point he says he was repeating Lord's Prayer to himself like a broken record when you just know 90% of people would just be cursing their heads off instead. Great role model for teens, esp. boys.By the way I just finished Crazy Dangerous a few days ago and it's not quite as amazing, but still good, also with a great MC. I'm really torn because I love Klavan's adult novels but he's SO good at YA, I don't know what I would want him to write more of.

I've only read the first book in this series and I'm already in love with Charlie. He's such an all around good guy...definitely not a whiner. I wish there were more guys like him in the real world.
