Quantum-like properties in Fantasy Story [s]

I have vague memories of a fantasy (I think) book where experiments were being done on something (fairies, I think?) what exhibited some quantum-like properties. For example, observing them and recording the observation would "lock in" a property like height which was normally continually fluctuating.

It's possible. I know that I've read at least part of that book, but I honestly cannot remember a single thing about it.
