Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I'm not laughing! Some of that artwork is great!

Haha, yeah I only wish I drew it! If there was one talent I could have I'd choose drawing.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I'm assuming a lot of them are from DeviantArt?

message 104: by Emily, Merfreak & Tribute (new)

Emily (emilimcg) | 251 comments Mod
Yeah. Or from random google searches. There's not a lot of ingo fan art out there.

message 105: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) YOU GUYS!!! I was in Barnes & Noble earlier, and guess what?!?!?!? They now have a Mermaids section! I literally almost squealed in the middle of the store! The mer-revolution is here!

message 106: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Wait seriously? I might have to slip into Barnes and Noble soon.

Yep! I was browsing the shelves and noticed Daughters of the Sea, then Sea Change by Aimee Friedman, and when I started wondering why all these mermaid books were together, I noticed the sign "Mermaids" next to its name. The section was shelved near the Angels and Werewolves, sections, too, so I'm glad mermaids are now being listed as one of the main paranormals. The other mermaid books in the section were both of Tera Lynn Childs's books, Tempest Rising, the Mermaid's Mirror, and the two listed above.

I've been listening to STORM by Lifehouse about 100 times a day as I write book 2 of The Sea Monster Memoirs. It fits the mood of the story PERFECTLY.

Oh my god, I LOVE Storm by Lifehouse! I've listened to it a bajillion times! It really has a mermaid-y feel to it. :)

message 113: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenhooper) | 101 comments Storm is SOOOOOOOOOOO good. On my really emotional days I tear up as I write some scenes. I'm such a sap.

message 114: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I do too Karen. Especially when I'm writing drafts where I might have to kill a character. It's so hard. I'm so attached to the little world I've created I hate for anyone to die, but it's illogical for a fairy tale happy ever after.
When Tangled Tides is released you should create a playlist for the group so we can listen while we read. I always love it when authors do that. Melissa Marr did a really good one for Wicked Lovely. In fact, I might make a folder for that.

message 115: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenhooper) | 101 comments Ooh I will def do that. I created one for the first book I wrote (not Tangled Tides). The player is at the bottom of my blog but I always forget about it. I did love looking at Melissa's playlist for Wicked Lovely. I will have to get the Tangled Tides playlist ready. :)

And *sigh* killing off characters is so so hard. Poor darlings.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I can't imagine the mental state of J.K. Rowling when she killed off some of hers. I wept throughout Deathly Hallows movie and film.

Karen (karenhooper) | 101 comments Oh my gosh, I know. And how about when Rue died in Hunger Games? I was a sobbing mess.

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) You guys...The biggest project I've ever done in school is due tomorrow. I'm stressing out. This speech determines if I pass or fail high school, there's that much weighted on it. So, yeah...you can understand my reaction. But I did the project on Creative Writing. I actually finished a book! This one's not about mermaids, but gorgons, and I'm thinking of self-publishing it. Of course, that will be years from now, because it needs alot more editing!

message 126: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Especially if you spelled a lot like that every time you used it, lol. Just kidding, don't kill me.
I hope it works out ok Garrett.
But in other news, I won a spelling bee today. It's pretty much the last cycle of spelling bees I'll ever get to do, so my mum is pretty adamant I give it one last shot. But winning ain't all that bad :)

message 127: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Awesome, GC! Congratulations! I finished my speech and I can't wait to find out what I made. I feel like I did pretty well, but I'm not sure. One of the judges made me kinda mad because it seemed like he was trying to tell me I got some of the Medusa mythology in my story wrong. Of course, there's such a thing as "creative liberties," so I don't know what his problem was.

message 128: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Well, some people are snobs. Nothing you can do about it but wait and pray I guess :)
And thanks on the spelling bee thing :) They gave me a gift card to Coldstone Creamery for winning, so I may be on a sugar high later on, lol.

message 129: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Lol! Well, I just found out that I passed! Guess I'm officially graduating in the spring! :D

message 130: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) So I noticed today our group has already passed the 100 mark. That's awesome, guys! Maybe by the end of the year we can double that. :)

message 131: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Oooh, congrats to our lovely group!

message 132: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) So the new school semester has started, and I'm the librarian's assistant, and I love it! Getting to be around books for an hour and a half a day? And plus, it's third period, and the library is generally empty then, so I can sit there and go through bookshelf after bookshelf if I want. I'm, literally, in heaven. :) Too bad our library has NO mermaid books whatsoever... sigh ...

message 133: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) A lot of school Libraries kind of suck. I never use ours. Granted, I'm at a Christian Homeschool Academy, and while I love Jesus, the "Wholesome" books in our library make me want to gag.

message 134: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) So today's my birthday, and guess who's on the cake? I'll post pictures later! :D

message 135: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Ah, my birthday is in two days! Happy Birthday!

message 136: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Thanks! And happy early birthday to you, GC!

message 137: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Yesterday was the first time in a long while I've checked the group (been busy with senior year and all), and I noticed the new group banner. It looks awesome! Did one of you make it, or did Goodreads somehow change the layout? It looks really good, so kudos to whoever changed it! :)

message 138: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Pretty sure goodreads did that. I'm not talented in that area at all.
Don't worry Garrett, I got the blog and group under control. I mean, obviously, they're a rough and rowdy bunch, but I'm up for it ;)
Good luck with school! But if you could send me your questions for Carolyn Turgeon, that would be fantastic. I've been meaning to do that for a while :)

message 139: by Garrett (last edited Apr 27, 2012 09:34AM) (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Thanks, GC! Oh yeah, those questions. I need to write those. I think I'll send some later today, when I'm able to get my hands on the book and come up with some specific questions. I really do want to start getting back into the group and blog (even then, there hasn't been much mermaid news to report about lately), and since the school year's finally winding down, I'll have more downtime to get more involved again. :)

Oh haha I just slapped that banner together in photoshop, if someone wants to make a nicer looking one, be my guest! I've been quite busy this school year, but it's summer for me now and I'm ready to dive back in as well :)

message 141: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Emily, as I said before, Photoshop does not like me.

Garrett, I completely understand. I've been sniffing around for mer-news, but there has literally been nothing . Quite sad. So yeah, interviewing Carolyn will definitely pump in some life. All I've been doing is spotlighting some upcoming books. I have however gotten my hands on some ARCs and things lately. I'll definitely keep a look out, but oh my goodness it has been hard lately.

I know right? I've been in need of a good mer-book for a while now since that I've finished most of the recent releases. *tear* Mer-book withdrawal....

message 143: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Man, I've read two or three ARCs and I'm having withdrawals. It's just sad.

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Today I was in Barnes & Noble, and they've already shelved The Vicious Deep! I was so excited. The cover's even more beautiful in person, and if you look carefully, on the trident there's mermaids carved into it. I can't wait to start reading it; now I know what's going to take up my time for the next couple days!

message 145: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) The Vicious Deep comes out Tuesday correct? Or did I miss something?

message 146: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Yep, it does, GC. But it's already been released at my Barnes & Noble. :)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) This week, I'm in Denver, as I'm relocating there very soon. I thought you guys might like to see a bakery that's in downtown Denver that a local I know told me about. I haven't been there yet, but I plan to check it out soon. Here's a picture I found of the outside of the bakery:

description

I've seen another mermaid on an advertisement for a sushi restaurant as well, although that last one I found kind of morbid...

message 148: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Whoa! Oh and good luck with the move! I love the neon mermaids, very cool.

message 149: by Garrett (last edited Aug 24, 2012 11:30AM) (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Thanks, GC! I actually went by the bakery yesterday, but they'd closed an hour before I got there. Sigh... But I plan to go back one day when it's open. I'm hoping the inside has a mermaid theme. Guess I'll have to wait and find out. :)

message 150: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Try and get pics if you can. It looks interesting.

On the other hand, I got the Doctor Who-cover of Entertainment Weekly the other day and they were talking about having Ariel cast on Once Upon A Time being a possibility. Are they ever going to hurry up and do it?
