Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments It is that time of the month again - time to decide on a reading challenge for August.

We now have 16 people in this group, not huge, but maybe enough to choose a book that we can all focus on for the month.

Post your suggestions by the end of day Friday and we'll select one or two from there. Don't be shy!

I'm about to start reading 'One Day' by David Nicholls. Anyone else keen to read this?

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) I could be really bold and challenge you all to read my new novel The Spanish Helmet. It is very much a Kiwi book (travels the length of the country and right through our known history and beyond) and can be had for as low as $2.99 on Kindle but is also available in paperback in NZ.

Otherwise, I have just added The Hut Builder to my to read list. It just won the NZ Post Book Awards fiction prize.

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Excellent choices - I hadn't heard of either of them (sorry Greg) but I'm tempted to read them both, especially considering they are set in NZ.
Is this your first book, Greg?

message 4: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Yes, first book. You need not apologise for not having heard of it as I haven't yet done much in the way of marketing.
Copies have just arrived in NZ yesterday and I am awaiting confirmation of retail stockists before I send out review copies and other PR items.
It can be downloaded on Goodreads too ($2.99) and/or ordered from my website at gregscowen.com for $19.95 NZD incl postage. It is sent from Auckland.

No reviews on Goodreads just yet (plenty on both amazon.com and amazon.co.uk) so am happy to 'remember' reviewers when releasing my second book in 2012/2013.

The Hut Builder looks like a really good read. Seventh book from this author, apparently.

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments As you can see, I have chosen Greg's book 'The Spanish Helmet' as the group read for the month of August. Reading back through the July messages, I found a request from another group member to have a New Zealand book. So I'm sure this will keep everyone happy. Would you be happy to answer any questions readers may have Greg? I can set up a seperate folder for that purpose. I'm not sure how many of the 17 members are active, but I'll be reading it!

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Angie (and the group), I would be honoured if you read The Spanish Helmet in August.
I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have and have also provided a website at gregscowen.com which contains some of my research and further information about the themes that are mentioned.
Remember that I am based in Switzerland at the moment so my answers are likely to come during your nights.

Mark (kyb3r) Along with The Golden Spanish Helmet (which I've already had a good headstart on), I'll be reading:

Red Mars for the Sci-fi/Fantasy group

and maybe I'll get around to finishing Neuromancer, maybe...

If not Neuromancer then I'll read Pride and Prejudice :)

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Hi Mark. Thanks for joining the challenge. Just wanted to check if you were reading 'The Spanish Helmet' or 'The Golden Helmet' as you have written above. No worries, if you are reading a different book though.
I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time a month or so ago. Really liked it.

message 9: by Mark (new)

Mark (kyb3r) Ooops. I meant 'The Spanish Helmet', not sure where I got golden from... thanks :P

It might be a bit different for a male reading Pride and Prejudice, at least, my friends told me that. My female friends think it's great, my male friends just look at me funny.

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Don't worry, Mark. We change with age.
10 years ago, I might have laughed too. Now I spend hours watching period drama from BBC and ITV etc. I also enjoy reading historical fiction and literary classics.

message 12: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) 5 from 13... odds are pretty good right now. If only Lotto were like that.

message 13: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments Squee! Looks like I won Lotto a copy!!! Stupidly excited about it. Thank you!!

message 14: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Great news! I have asked my brother in Auckland to send them out. Hope he gets to it tomorrow.

Enjoy.

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Well done Darkpool. Must mean that I missed out. Thanks Greg for giving us the chance to win your book.

Darkpool | 1032 comments The book arrived today - very efficient! - but I need to finish my library book first.

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) It is good news to find out my brother is efficient. Really pleased you have the book already.
