I like(d) it when my daughter's basketball team won their tournament at St. Valentine's on Saturday.

There was this sequence with about 1:20 left in the fourth quarter - my daughter's team up by six - where they ran about 40 seconds off the clock by playing keepaway around the perimeter until St. James was forced to foul. I nearly wept. It was a thing of beauty...

On the other hand, my other daughter didn't fare so well in her cheer competition but she got to wear makeup and get her hair fixed up real purdy so the day wasn't a total loss.

Christ... From drinking myself silly every weekend, making fun of the goth kids with Coop and Jonesy at Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus shows at St. Andrew's, and living like a vampire to this? How?

You're a wise woman, Cat.

Truth be told, I wouldn't have it any other way. I just like to PRETEND I'm not going down without a fight. Don't tell anyone, OK?

Watching your kids do well is the greatest thing in the world, Clark. Beats the shit out of sticky smoky clubs any day of the week.

It is a good feeling, but I tend to lean more towards Adams ethos ;):

The pants would have stayed on, because the top button still works. But they would have gaped open along the zipper.

I'm sure you still want to imagine me without pants, however. I can't stop you.

I like it when I can save an animal's life. Today I saved a honeybee that had been flying around my living room for 3 days.

And yet it made me so happy to save it. I was dreading the moment when I would find its little lifeless dehydrating body. I had even put out sugar water for it.

We'd be in a world of hurt without honeybees!

message 179: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Millions of honeybees in our yard this year. They've been swarming every blossom on the flowering plums, the almond trees and the pear trees. My entire yard has been buzzing.

Yea!

message 181: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Exactly! I left early today for a doctor's appointment, and I suspect that when I get in tomorrow there will be something piled up waiting for me. On the one hand, it's nice to feel a bit of job security. On the other hand, I want to have stuff added to my to-do list only when I know it's getting added.

This is so weird. In this Norman Mailer Hitler novel, Hitler's father Alois moves to a farm and takes up beekeeping. One of his colleagues says, "Come, Alois, they are only insects." And Alois says no, they are one of the wonders of our universe.

message 185: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments That is weird, considering what followed.

I believe honeybees are wondrous. I learned that from my dad, who kept bees for several years and continues to be fascinated by them. One of his favorite books is The Life of the Bee by Maurice Maeterlinck.

I once got an email from my (not so great) uncle that showed the aftermath of someone's discovery of a honeybee hive under an outside grill cover. It made me sick. Bees annihilated so that grilling could resume.
