Thanks for getting a head start on the August Endicott read! :)
(p.s. I moved the Riddle-Master topic to a dedicated folder & changed the name to match the other topics titles - hope you don't mind.)

I just read this collection a couple of months ago for the first time and loved it so much that I went out and bought the rest of McKillip's fiction! I have to admit, the first book slightly bored me, then the ending of the first book happened and I couldn't put it down for the remaining two!

No problem. I'm still figuring out how these discussion groups work.
read it a couple of years ago, and thought it was a little too tolkein-esque. it's beautifully lyrical in places, and i get why some people love it a lot, but not planning on a re-read.

I just started last night. I am liking it so far. There were a couple of places where I had to go back and reread a couple of passages as I had missed what was happening the first read through.

I learned early on that Patricia McKillip in not the kind of writer you can read quickly. Great and sweeping plot events and characterizations can take place in a single phrase. I am a fast reader and sometimes to the point of unconsciously skimming the text. But, fortunately, when you slow down and really take in McKillip's writing, you are rewarded with vivid imagery and word magic!

Yeah, I find that almost always true of her writing style -- the imagery is so beautiful and dream like it sweeps me along and then a few paragraphs later I realize I have no idea what actually *happened* action-wise.

I finished the first two books in the trilogy. I have read other Patricia McKillip books and enjoy her writing.

I first read this book in my early 20's, while in college struggling with what it meant to be a physics major and a woman (at that time, in a class of 60 there would be maybe one other woman). The character of Raederle was a revelation- the first time I came across a woman in a fantasy novel who was more than a decorative minor character. Raederle was smart, she acted instead of only reacted to events, she was talented.... (of course she was also gorgeous, but I didn't hold that against her *too* much.)
McKillip continues to be one of the authors I can count on for complex, strong female leads.

Just pulled out my copies of the Riddle-Master series. They are so old they only cost $2.25 each! They have been passed around, come back again and so are well worn and well loved, but still intact.
