Is this a comedy? Is it anything like a Douglas Adams book?

Actually it is a good book but, you have to like Cormier. Cormier is very talented at taking you and twisting you up like a pretzel emtionally. I read a number of his books because I find what he has to say very thought provaking and he writes well. Cormier's major difficulty is that he will never end a book with a nice ending. He always chooses the darkest ending so he is defintely not a comedy. After getting to the end I promise myself not to read any more Cormier till another intresting book of his comes out. Some people don't like Cormier because he does look at the very dark aspects of life but, his also trying to get people to think out of the box and question what is right and wrong. It is always best to read a book on your own and form you own opinion.
Yeah, definitely not a comedy. Nothing like Douglas Adams. I personally think The Chocolate War has the most meaning out of all of his books that I've read so far (although I haven't read close to all of them).
I think you should just read it and decide for yourself what you think. Like what Pandora "Kat" said.
Although The Chocolate War is not a comedy, there are some downright funny scenes in it--the "Room 19" chapter, for example, or the scene where Archie interrogates Goober, or Tubs Casper's thoughts about Rita (and how much he doesn't realize about her). Bits of humor do break through in this dark story. In fact, humor is one reason why the Vigils as a group is allowed to survive. Think about it.
No. It is absolutely not a comedy. It is a very good story and Robert Cormier really has a great way of making his stories truly meaningful from so many angles. If you are looking for a laugh, this book isn't for you. If you are looking for a book that will challenge you emotionally than this is the book for you. It lets you see the problems the different characters face and allows you to understand and feel for all in the book. That is meaningful because usually you would see a book with a good guy and a bad guy and that would be it. This gives you the opportunity to see the "bad guys" in a layered way.
