C'mon... You weren't old enough to get in clubs back then, were you?

message 52: by ms.petra (last edited Aug 17, 2011 07:13AM) (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) just barely... and if you knew people you could get in anyway :)

Michael Good song. I don't think I've ever been on a dance floor with balloons and I hope I never am!

"Build Me Up Buttercup" - The Foundations, #3 in 1968. OK, I'm cheating here as the Foundations had a few other hits, but nothing like this one. Covered by ex-New York Doll David Johansen after he went solo.

Janice (jamasc) I loved this song when I was a kid!

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Wow. Blast from the past--love that song, Clark. My friends and I used to dance to it at sleepovers.

Jim | 6484 comments That is a good song.

"Little Bit O' Soul" - The Music Explosion. Mansfield, Ohio's finest hit paydirt in 1967, going all the way to #2. Now that's a hook!

ms.petra (mspetra) HA! love these old videos! and yes that's a hook. I will probably have this song in my head all day.

He looks like he's completely surprised to even be on a stage.

According to Wikipedia, he checked into the Wooden Waldorf in '06. Justice?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments now i gotta find out where he's buried so i can pour some chocola on his grave and sing "lil bit o soul"

Exactly what is chocola?

message 65: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) The lead singer kind of looked like Richie Cunningham's evil cousin.

Janice wrote: "The lead singer kind of looked like Richie Cunningham's evil cousin."

Or the evil twin of Bernie on "Room 222."

"What I Like About You" - The Romantics, #48 in 1980. "Hey, uh-huh-huh" + hand claps + an opening riff that still lights up the room + a Keith Moonish, singing drummer + three knockaround guys from Detroit's east side + Rickebackers + matching leather suits = enough royalty checks to last until the Rapture.

He looks a lot like my husband's Irish Catholic cousins from Chicago.

Hows about
Golden Earring's "Radar Love?"

Only problem is they had another hit in the 80's - "Twilight Zone." But we'll allow you special dispensation so go ahead and post.

I'm outta here for the rest of the week. Talk soon...

janine | 7709 comments Does that mean we can clutter this thread with our own favourite one-hit wonders?

Thank you Father Clark for the dispensation.

Do you see the word "democracy" posted anywhere around here?

message 75: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments I do now :)

Actually, feel free. I don't have much time any more.

"Crash" - The Primitives, #5(UK), #3(US) in 1988. Too tired to explain why I love this song. I just do.

"Smokin' in the Boys Room" - Brownsville Station, #3 in 1973. For a few years there back in junior high and high school, it seemed every other concert I went to featured Brownsville Station as the opening act. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, even after the hit. I think it had something to do with Cub Koda's glasses.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Pretty nice Elvis-inspired jumpsuit on the guitarist/singer dude.

"Working Class Man" - Jimmy Barnes, #74 in 1986. From the Ron Howard film "Gung Ho." OK, Barnes had plenty of hits in Australia but only one in America, the only country that matters.

"Hocus Pocus" - Focus, #9 in 1973. Who woulda thunk the Dutch could yodel? Jan Akkerman rips on guitar but I bet even he can't pronounce the singer's first name.

message 82: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Yodeler looks like he's on some Black Beauties.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

Or amyl nitrate.

message 84: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments HA.

message 85: by Michael (new)

Michael Q: What's worse than the prep for a colonoscopy?
A: Hocus Pocus by Focus.

message 86: by [deleted user] (new)

"I Go Crazy" - Flesh for Lulu, minor hit on the College Rock charts in 1987. There's something vaguely T.Rexsian about that fuzzy Gretsch White Falcon guitar sound, Goth lite for the John Hughes crowd with a hook big enough to hang their hats on. Wish I still had my black leather motorcycle jacket but after I was done with it, the Salvation Army didn't even want it. The blue/black hair? Not so much.

message 87: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments It was on the soundtrack of "Some Kind of Wonderful" by Hughes.
