Book Talk discussion
What Are You Reading?
Well it has been a long, winding road so far and I need to make sure that I get all the plot threads fresh in my mind.
Poor Jon. I hope he can at least recharge his Kindle somewhere...assuming he got the battery problem sorted out. No power really sucks!
I'm planning to buy Nemesis tomorrow, but I may not be able to read it for a little bit. I've got a group read going for Frankenstein. (It's a re-read for me, but I haven't read it in decades.)
I've got McCammon's They Thirst on deck, thanks to a fellow Kindler who was willing to loan it to me. (Thanks, Chris!)
Then I've got my horror group read starting on Monday.
Whew! Somewhere in there I have to sneak it in. I read Stage Whispers not that long ago, so most of it is still fresh in my mind. I can't wait to see what happens! : )
I'm really getting worried about Jon. I haven't heard from him or seen him posting anywhere since Monday.Hopefully it's just that his power is out. : (

Nope. They need to replace a pole on my street that broke in the storm. I have seen tree trucks go by but no power trucks at all.

And Char, I am sure he's fine! Most of Long Island is without power so it would not be a surprise. I just hope he can go to one of his relative's (if they're in any better shape) because there's a LOT of work to be done.
Yeah, you're probably right, Sharon.Last year they had to replace 3 poles between my house and the last house on our street.
When the guys finally came (the power guys and the pole guys) they all had southern accents because they all came up from one of the Carolinas.
"How y'all doing?"
I can't believe what A-holes people are being. Our power companies actually had to get on TV and ask people not to yell or harass the power and tree workers because it's not their fault. Um, I don't know about you, but when I see them come down my road I do a fist pump and cheer! And in NJ, people are waiting in line for 1 hr 45 mins. There are cops at the stations that DO have power to keep people from fighting. One friend stated that they almost arrested an old lady that zoomed in and cut off everyone, saying she couldn't wait. Then, after that 1.45 hr wait, he was told he could only get $20 worth of gas. All this for a guy who commutes 45 mins to work each day. Oh. My. God. We are LUCKY compared to NJ and Long Island.
The inhabitable biosphere is only a thin layer on top of the planet, and civilization is an even thinner, more precarious slice of that.
Last year during the storm we waited almost two hours for a whopper at BK. They were one of the few places that had power and after a day or two not many people had anything left to eat at home. The grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs were all without power and people were hungry. It sucked.
Just got Odd Apocalypse from the library---gotta love e-book library books. I love this whole series. Odd is such an interesting character.
I hope you enjoy it, Chris!I have Live by Night on hold at the library. I can't wait until it comes in. : )
I still owe you a book, Lee! The Book of Lost Things was awesome. You should tell us about meeting John Connally.
@Chris: brother, you don't owe me anything. I appreciate all your support (and Charlenes!) and encouragement so much. @Charlene: Nice to see you, woman! :D Thank you.
As to meeting John Connelly, it went like this...
I giggled a lot.
He tolerated it.
HA! I would have been the same way. I probably wouldn't even be able to speak. BTW, I was bummed that When We Meet Jesus didn't win the 3rd quarter award. Even though I really enjoyed Puppet Graveyard -I really think you deserved to win.
Just sayin.
It was a really cool time. Got to meet him, Lee Child, Michael Koryta, Michael Connelly. Best money I ever spent on a mini-vacation. Can't wait till the one next year now. Damn it!Thanks on Jesus. I thought it stood a really good chance and regardless I'm very proud of it. I think it packs a strong wallop. Thanks for the support and faith, Charlene!
Your seminars are so much more interesting than the ones for lawyers. So jealous. Jesus is on deck for me.
Wow, that sounds like some weird baseball related religious country song...
I need to prepare myself though because I know that this book is going to thoroughly kick my ass like Collected Songs of Sonnelion did.
Lol. Hey, that reminds me. I forgot you were a lawyer. Can I shoot you an email about something concerning that? And yes, totally sounds like a baseball related religious country song. Haha.
Yeah, Jesus is pretty brutal and touching. I look forward to hearing what you think, Chris!
I do believe Marc has the right of it; we are only one widespread disaster away from a complete breakdown in civilization.Char, It's been forever since I read They Thirst but I remember loving it. I am getting more into The Terror now. Especially since I have power again!!
Hey Sharon! In the dark is the perfect setting to read it, though.Last year during our outage, I read The Yellow Wallpaper by candlelight/flashlight. It was awesome! : )
Actually, I do read it by candlelight, in bed, before I go to sleep. I rarely freak myself out but one book got to me: The Hunt for the Skinwalker, by Colm A. Kelleher and George Knapp. Because it was supposed to be a true story, I fell for it hook, line and sinker. I would walk my dog at night (In my very wooded area) and start getting chills-especially when the animals crunched the leaves in the woods and I would shine the flashlight into the trees and see glowing eyes looking back at me. Of course it was just the deer, but for a moment, just one little moment, I allowed myself to wonder, "What if?" XD
Chris wrote: "I hope that you have a BIG dog....LOL"He was a Papillon, Chris. Not exactly a big dog but he would tear a mouse apart in seconds! :)
Well if the bear runs after you, you don't have to run faster than the bear. Just faster than the dog, right?
If the dog looks like an actual meal, maybe. A papillon looks more like something a bear would pick his teeth with after a real meal, not a meal in itself.
Kealan wrote: "I live for such moments and love to be scared by imagination. Sadly very little scares me anymore outside of real-world concerns."Kealan, check out the movie V/H/S. It's available to rent on Amazon or streaming online if you search for it. It's the first movie in a LONG time to actually give me a chill!
Marc wrote: "If the dog looks like an actual meal, maybe. A papillon looks more like something a bear would pick his teeth with after a real meal, not a meal in itself."Our papillon was actually quite large-he weighed twice as much as a normal 10-12 lb dog. He weighed in at 20 lbs but was full pedigree and healthy. Well, mostly, the poor thing stroked out twice at age 10 and we lost him this year. :(
Aww man, I LOVED it. Seems like it's a love it or hate it kind of movie. I got chills with The Strange Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Young.
Kealan wrote: "That and the last one were the best of the bunch, but overall it was just a bunch of hip filmmakers using tired old ideas to mediocre effect. Ti West, whose films continue to impress me, more or le..."Ti's was definitely the worst of the bunch. I liked them all to varying degrees but The Strange Thing...Emily freaked me out because it ended FAR differently than imagined.
I liked the serial killer in the woods one simply for the way they portrayed the killer, making it clear that there was something supernatural going on.
And while I would have avoided that spooky chick in the first segment like the plague, I can see where a handful of drunk, horny guys would not have cared if she looked halfway decent and was willing.
And Kealan, Ti West's films IMPRESS you? LOL Most people think he's terrible. The Innkeepers only saving grace was the characters-they all were drawn very boldly and it worked.Still need to see House of the Devil, though. Maybe today...
Yup, I found him on Facebook, too. He just got his power back yesterday but he still can't work because the mass transit is still down.
I just finished Alan Ryker's newest The Hoard. It ROCKED. I have to find a way to squeeze in Nemesis here.

The point of this whole site, I guess!
Whatever you do, Kealan, find those two stories in whatever form you can!
I am making this a separate line to emphasize that THOSE STORIES are SUPERIOR!
mightily
