Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I heard an interview with Donald Ray Pollock today, so now I'm itching to read THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME.

That looks like a really interesting collection, Jon. Right up my alley. I like a lot of the loneliness and sadness in Dennis Etchison short stories.

That book gets fantastic reviews, Chris. Let us know what you think when you're done.

I highly recommend it, Marc. I have a couple of Etchison's short story collections, myself.

Will do. Check out the interview he did on Fresh Air. Such a humble guy, you'll wanna buy 10 copies of each of his books :)

Char Jon Recluse wrote: "I got an autographed copy of Through the Eyes of Strays today!"

Nice, Jon! That's pretty cool. : )

message 1107: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I want one too!!!

message 1108: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman Chris wrote: "I heard an interview with Donald Ray Pollock today, so now I'm itching to read THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME."

That's a definite must-read.

message 1109: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I just finished FULL DARK, NO STARS. Absolutely loved every second of it. I started SHUTTER ISLAND earlier today and am enjoying it so far.

I always read one real book and one ebook (that way if I don't have my real book with me, I can read the ebook on my phone), and I'm digitally finishing up THE ROAD, with THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME on deck.

message 1110: by Char (new)

Char I loved Full Dark, No Stars too.

message 1111: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments About a third of the way into SHUTTER ISLAND. Pretty killer so far. First time out with Dennis Lehane.

message 1112: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'll second that.

message 1113: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely be reading more of his stuff. The best part is I've made it this far without seeing the films of SHUTTER ISLAND or MYSTIC RIVER, so I get to go in un-spoiled.

message 1114: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Have you guys read THE GIVEN DAY? It's cheap on Kindle.

message 1115: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I haven't gotten around to it yet.

message 1116: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Maybe I'll skip the Horror section at HPB and go for Crime/Mystery :)

message 1117: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I never would have found John Connolly if I stayed in the horror section. ;)

message 1118: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I know of Connolly but don't know if I've read anything of his. I'm pretty sure there are a few on my bookshelf, too.

message 1119: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments His Charlie Parker series is highly recommended.

message 1120: by Glen (new)

Glen Krisch | 38 comments Connolly's Parker series is outstanding, as is his solo effort, The Book of Lost Things. Honing his skills as a journalist, the mixture of his economy of words and depth of detail are admirable.

message 1121: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Don't forget Bad Men, Glen.

message 1122: by Jon Recluse (last edited Aug 31, 2012 09:35AM) (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Eventually everything is predictable, Kealan.

message 1123: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I think THE GIVEN DAY and STAGE WHISPERS are gonna be my Kindle buys today (I get a couple every payday).

message 1124: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Excellent choices!

message 1125: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Kealan wrote: "Yeah, I didn't like it.

I have THE GIVEN DAY on deck. Hardcover though, not digital, so I expect carpal tunnel by the time I'm done with this monster."

Okay.

Kinda wimpy for a Stephen King fan, Kealan.
You should have bulked up by now......

message 1126: by Chris (last edited Aug 31, 2012 10:59AM) (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Again, that's a big reason I love my Kindle. Every book is less than half an inch thick :)

I started a Dean Koontz book, YOUR HEART BELONGS TO ME, last night after finishing SHUTTER ISLAND. I think I'm gonna put it aside for another Lehane, though. The first couple chapters of the Koontz are surfers talking in surfer slang, even in the narrative. It's kind of annoying.

message 1127: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I can't stand Koontz.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis, Kealan. My mom, uncles and sisters suffer from it.

I'm off to the ER.
Catch you later.

message 1129: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments There definitely are a lot of misses anymore. Sure miss when you could count on something like TICK TOCK or WATCHERS every time.

message 1130: by Char (new)

Char You're going to the ER, Jon? Are you ok?

Sorry about your arthritis, Kealan. I have it in my wrists as well, but don't type as much as I assume you must. That sucks.

Chris, so what did you think of the ending of Shutter Island? Did you see it coming?
I loved it, but I think the ending of Mystic River might have been even better.

message 1131: by Chris (last edited Aug 31, 2012 03:37PM) (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Charlene wrote: "Chris, so what did you think of the ending of Shutter Island?"

*****SPOILER ALERT*******

Yes. As soon as they started talking about the "nonexistent" Patient 67 and they said Andrew Laedis wasn't there, I guessed that Teddy was Andrew. When they saw the calendar with "Patient 67" written across the same days Teddy was on the island, that was kind of a dead giveaway, too.

In the next 200-ish pages, I went back and forth a few times, though, and the writing and other story events were so good I didn't care about not being surprised. I also thought the fairly graphic depiction of his wife killing the kids made up for not being shocked by the ending, too. Some of that was pretty tough to read.

message 1132: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'm back.

I burned myself last week. 2nd degree, across the back of my fingers. It's been sort of healing, but the pain is getting worse, so I went to have it checked out.

I'm okay.

message 1133: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Hey, I just noticed, KIN is #59 in horror on Amazon!

Movin' on up, Kealan!

message 1134: by Char (new)

Char How did you manage to do that, Jon?
I'm glad you're ok.
*HUGS*

message 1135: by Char (new)

Char Chris wrote: "Charlene wrote: "Chris, so what did you think of the ending of Shutter Island?"

I didn't guess the ending at all. Are you going to try out Mystic River? I think that's my favorite.

message 1136: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 363 comments I want to read Mystic River

My mom thought her dishwasher wasn't draining. She overfills it and stuff flips over while the machine is running and fills with water. When she opens the door, the stuff shifts and the water pours out. We've discussed this before, but.... Anyway, I went over to check on it. She ran it for me, and it drains fine. She asked if I was sure, so I reached in to see if the bottom was dry....and made contact with the heating element under the bottom rack.

message 1138: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Glad to hear you are ok, Jon.

message 1139: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Thanks, Chris.

message 1140: by Char (new)

Char Ouch.
On the bright side, you get good guy points for trying to help your mom. : )

message 1141: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Do they balance out the stupid points I got for sticking my hand in there?

message 1142: by Char (new)

Char Almost. : )
I'm glad you're ok.

message 1143: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Charlene wrote: "Are you going to try out Mystic River? I think that's my favorite."

I almost bought a copy at Half-Price Books, thought that I had one at home, then got home and couldn't find it. Next time I'm at HPB I'll pick up a copy, then I'm sure I'll find the one I thought I had :)

message 1145: by Char (new)

Char I just finished a novella by Lee Thompson, one of my new favorite authors.
When We Join Jesus In Hell. It was unbelievably good.
I think I'm going to start Bethany's Sin.

message 1146: by Jon Recluse (last edited Sep 02, 2012 08:57AM) (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'm gonna check Thompson out.

I'm reading Picking the Bones and The Midnight Road

message 1147: by Char (new)

Char Both by authors I'm going to look into soon.

message 1148: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments How's your mom?

message 1149: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Finished THE ROAD last night. Wow.

Started THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME. So far it's great.

message 1150: by Char (new)

Char Thanks for asking, Jon. My Mom came home Friday night. We've got her settled in and she seems to be doing well. She can't drive yet, or lift anything over 10 lbs, but aside from those things, she's doing well.
