@ Jonathan - yes, stunningly good. The reader, like Ian, the main protagonist, doesn't know what's going on until very near the end. Wonderful story which, as much fiction does, requires some suspension of disbelief, but I'm really glad I had it recommended - and that recommendation endorsed by you!Alex
I finished off the book I was reading before using my kindle, but didn't like it so made myself Only read on it for a while. I now read one of each all the time to get through the 60ish unread books, which helps make sure I don't leave kindle at home
Just finished Drop Dead Gorgeous. In theory, it's zombies in Belfast, but its extremely bitty, and the zombies don't even show up till 80% through the book, by which time the cast of truly horrid and appalling characters have maimed raped and murdered each other pretty efficiently on their own. The zombies just chomp on the remainder for a bit; the end. Disappointing.
Just finished http://www.amazon.co.uk/Screen-Six-eb... - not on here. I'd add it if it were full length but it's a short story. Really nice idea and well written. Gave it a 4* review.
I should get Ignite to read the books on my wishlist so I can find out whether or not they're worth reading *grin*
I just finished Running the Rift. It was a bit of a weird read, I enjoyed it but the first 80% was mostly just life in Rwanda through a young boy who was training to go to the Olymipics. The latter portion of the 80% had flecks of troubles/war throught out and progressively getting worse. 80-90% was the war and 90-100% was life after the war. It was very moving though, still hits me that so many people went through that and there are people today who will have lost family members to this massacre as is true of so many other countries and ethnic groups. It makes me really sad.
Going to read something a little more light hearted next like The Sittaford Mystery

I've finished The Morganville Vampires Book Five: Lord of Misrule - Rachel Caine. Now I am going to read The Morganville Vampires Book Six: Carpe Corpus - Rachel Caine.
Jud (Disney Diva) wrote: "Well Jim, it would be a close call. At least in Schindler's List he saved some people."I'm sure that Schindler in his prime would have been fun to have around as well :-)
I just compared books with Ignite and there are 66 that we have both read. They are mainly "our authors"
I've started Fake Kate since no one else is in the office and I can do what I like :o) Cloud reader!Gonna start The Sittaford Mystery at lunch on my kindle
Last night I read (because it's a short story so you can) Crowley's Rival by Alex Roddie. He writes what you might call historical adventures which are mainly mountaineering in nature and this little taster sets the scene for one of his full length novels. Still thinking about the review. The writing is more than competent and in places glorious. It might end up on the blog!Next I fear I shall have to read Just Whistle by Alfie Robins for our village book group.
Finished The Immortals, not the best one of the series,no explanation why the killer did what he did.Just starting Life... With No Breaks which i bought in October 2010.
I doubt the latter has improved with keeping. I read it before I started reviewing. Had to have a second go a couple of months later to finish it. :(
I've finished The Morganville Vampires Book Six: Carpe Corpus - Rachel Caine. Now I am going to read The Morganville Vampires Book Seven: Fade Out - Rachel Caine.
Just finished
The Geneva Decision
, an action thriller that doesn't slavishly follow the formula. Its protagonist is a non-Special-Forces woman, her organization isn't some ultra-secret government spook shop, and she's not trying to save the universe. People miss their shots, get in fights they don't win, and bicker. In short, it has more resemblance to the real world than a lot of other entries in the genre. A solid four stars. If you're interested, my review is available at http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....
Struggled to finish The Poisonous Seed, a little disappointing, but am now really enjoying Night Waking
just finished Life... With No Breaks, laugh out loud,i think not,the use of american words doesn't impress me and then he slagged off milton keynes, last book i read by mr spalding me thinks.Just starting Cold Grave.
Have just finished Alex by Adam J Nicolai ,enjoyed very much and might get his other book called Rebecca ,has anyone read it and would like to know if they would recommend it
Finished Night Waking and thought it was terrific. Brought back memories - trying to write while tending two children - never having a minute to pee in peace - negotiation skills worthy of a UN peacekeeper. Back down to earth with a more sedate crime novel now, A Dangerous Talent
Kay (Golden Girl) wrote: "Have just finished Alex by Adam J Nicolai ,enjoyed very much and might get his other book called Rebecca ,has anyone read it and would like to know if they would recommend it"I haven't Kay, but as you can imagine it's on my hit list. I need more time!
Just finished The Mysterious Affair At Styles. Very enjoyable, but perhaps overwhelmingly clever? This was my first Agatha Christie book, so I had had no previous experience of how much information one needs to keep track of. Wow.Also just finished Kahlil Gibran's short book of crazy poems, The Madman.
Now tentatively taking a look at The Rules of Wealth by Richard Templar.
I've just finished reading 'The Silver Mist' by Martin Treanor, it's an excellent and moving read. Check out the full review on my blog:
http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Or just go ahead and read it anyway! Next I'm onto Qualia by Marie Brown.
I started The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language on the recommendation of Patti.
It's funny! Only read a couple of chapter. A lot of information in each one though so not sure if I'll actually take anything away from it
Jud (Disney Diva) wrote: "It's funny! Only read a couple of chapter. A good dipper.
Yep a good dipper, Karen.I wish my memorisation skills were what they once were, cuz there's loads of stuff in there I'd love to throw into random conversations.
Probably just as well. I bore my friends enough as it is. ;)
Started a book last night (can't remember the name), it was supposed to be a sci-fi about two alien races at war who were making peace by uniting the two ruling families.Yeah right!!!
One of the *alien* races had really pale skin, red eyes and - yes, you've guessed it! - fangs!!!
Vampires!
What the heck are they doing in my science fiction?!?!?!
Needless to say that is one book I'll not be finishing!
That strikes me as acute laziness on the part of the author, either that or an attempt to ride on the 'vampire bandwagon'
Karen wrote: "it's more of a 'dipping in' book rather than read it straight through, I thought, otherwise I'd never remember any of it. A good dipper."I agree with Karen. This is how I read it.
I finished Fake Kate which was brilliant although got quite confusing near the end, David brings it all together though and it soon makes sense. I've started Peril at End House
Marc wrote: "...started The Things They Carried"
That sounds well worth reading - tho I doubt it'll enhance my peace of mind!
I have just finished ice diaries, it taught me a lot about adventure and self sufficiency, and had some good battle scenes! It was a lot easier to read thanLolita!
