Depends if the bookcase is in someones bedroom and they are in bed at the time. for some reason they think its creepy, I just said well shut the front door then and it won't happen again.

Sorry, I digress.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments but did you then grave their Kindle?

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Artemis Fowl and started Greg Jones' The Sword, The Book and The Stone. About 20% in and enjoying it.

message 357: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Okay, Ingnite. Back on topic then.

I'm at 53% of Artemis Fowl and I've also been reading a few short stories I've recently downloaded as I didn't feel like putting them into a collection.

message 358: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Don't mind people being off topic Patti - that's why this group is as much fun as it is. It's just that, occasionally, I want to talk about the topic and feel like I'm rudely interrupting!

message 359: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments To be honest I think its a very good thing that you interrupted when you did Ingnite, if you could call it interrupting when we were the ones off topic (badly)

message 360: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lol, Ingnite! We are terrible, aren't we?

Never mind, we do usually get back on topic, even if we need a bit of a push.

Have got Before I Go to Sleep on my kindle tbr at some stage. Just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns which was great and just started Snow Angels, a bit of scandi crime set in Finland.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Just finished Ten Second Staircase which was great. I've read others in the series and they've all been very good. They're about two ageing detectives, Bryant & May, who work for the PCU (Peculiar Crimes Unit). They have worked together in London during the war to the present. They solve crimes in some unusual ways and the books are smattered with bits of London history.
Kult The Kult is now going to be started tonight, thanks to Shaun who donated it as a prize for our quiz, and I'm looking forward to it.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Bryant and May? Groan. That was a match made in heaven eh?

With your user name you would be the one to notice that!

message 369: by Sharon4 (new)

Sharon4 | 20 comments I've finished The Doll. It's very early du Maurier so not of the same calibre as her later work. However, the title story is macabre and shocking and contains hints of My Cousin Rachel, especially in its flawed, vulnerable narrator. I enjoyed it enough to go back for another read. The final story, The Limpet is also worth a mention. I didn't know that du Maurier had a comedic side, but the voice in this story is hilarious.

I've moved onto The Warsaw Anagrams and so far, I think it's great. It's certainly not an easy read - as if the Warsaw ghetto wasn't bad enough, a family becomes the victim of a terrible crime. But weren't they that already? What does crime mean when the state itself is criminal? The setting is dreadful, but Richard Zimler's writing is beautiful and hard to put down.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No one can hold a candle to you, Ingnite.

Sorry, all.

Sharon, please let us know how you get on with the Warsaw Anagrams. I've seen mixed reviews. It's not far down my TBR list.

message 374: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) Warsaw Anagrams is fantastic

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Well I have just finished reading Tempt the Devil for the second time in seven days. Now that romance batteries are fully stocked up, I am starting on Six Seconds...

message 376: by Linda (new)

Linda | 33 comments I've just finished reading Broadmoor Revealed: Victorian Crime and the Lunatic Asylum, which was quite an interesting look at the history of Broadmoor and some of the archives. I've also just read Lilies, a short story by which I was really impressed. It's beautifully written. I'm just about to start The Boys from Brazil. I have read it before, but many years ago so I'm looking forward to it :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just finished Artemis Fowl. I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I'll write a review tomorrow as I now want to get stuck into The Kult before I get too sleepy. I hate having to reread the last few pages I read before I fell asleep the next time I pick my book up.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Good God Linda and Patti, you guys really get through books. I'm in awe.

I downloaded the Broadmoor book the other day when it was advertised as a freebie. I love books like that.

Anyway, I'll carry on plodding through the Chrysalids. Linda's at 25% of In The Blood. Will I never get my lovely Kindle back?

message 379: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'd count your losses Geoff and buy a new one

message 380: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Linda's soon going to get really stuck into In the Blood, you're not going to see any of it when the action picks up !

message 381: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You'll be making your own dinner, too.

message 382: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments too right Patti !

message 383: by Linda (new)

Linda | 33 comments Geoff, I bought my OH a kindle of his own and that way he doesn't have to "borrow" mine :)

message 384: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I did too, but sadly hubby doesn't seem to enjoy it as much as I do... he's read In the Blood but nothing else since... oh well guess that'll be a backup if mine breaks cos I'll sure give it more love than hubby does !

message 385: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments poor wee neglected Kindle, how can your hubby be so cruel

message 386: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I know, I am so annoyed ! Obviously my power doesn't work anymore... He got it for me, saw how much I loved it, I keep praising it again and again, I made mine all nice and pretty, and he's still got the big bear attitude about it :(

message 387: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think I sold another one yesterday. One of the other expat ladies here stopped by to borrow tree books (I really don't mind lending them anymore!) and I was extolling the virtues, as you do. She was stuck here over the summer and had to reread a bunch of books as she had nothing new. Her next leave isn't until November. Bet anything she'll be bringing a kindle back.

message 388: by Linda (new)

Linda | 33 comments Probably he secretly loves his kindle but doesn't want to admit it! My husband has read quite a few books on his although for someone who could build a computer if he had to, he seems strangely unable to do anything for himself on the Kindle other than switch on & off or turn pages!

message 389: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I know that feeling, Linda! Dave actually expected me to sort his collections for him! I showed him how and told him to get on with it.

message 390: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Showed hubby the tricks, but I am somewhat limited by my knowledge and laziness at reading the manual lol. No need for collections yet, he's only loaded like 4 books (and one was only a test one I think) !
Guess maybe he's got too much on his mind at the moment, with doing up the trike, sorting out the new heaters before it gets really cold, and as I found out yesterday, painting the lounge and the bathroom walls !

message 391: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh I hope he's not the type who is great at starting jobs but never finishes!

message 392: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments No, I am lucky, he's quite good at getting things done :)
Not like my dad lol - when he bought his house in 1988 he started by doing the bathroom. Ten years later it still wasn't done... Then I moved to the UK... Four years ago, they decided to re-do the bathroom. It's still not finished lol... It's not much, this time they only need to finish the painting, but for some reason he just won't get round to doing it. Mum's not saying anything but I bet she's fuming inside...

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Patti (P E) wrote: "Oh I hope he's not the type who is great at starting jobs but never finishes!"

My ex was like that...I once bought a new bathroom suite and the new loo was sat in my living room for over a year. My dad used to joke asking if I was going to put flowers in it!
He did used to get around to jobs eventually so I didn't moan too much...lol.

message 394: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments hahaha Vanessa, there's a house we go past on the way to pre-school, and there is a loo and a wheelbarrow outside, both with flowers in them !
Thought it was a bit weird, but is it some kind of British custom then?

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I suppose you've got to use old loos for something. I think it must be our sense of humour...lol.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Many years ago my brother owned a gentlemen's drinking club in central Birmingham called The Odd Spot. Used to be the haunt of lawyers and accountants, so always profitable.

The entrance had a toilet either side of the doorway, much like elite clubs would have lions rampant in front of theirs.

The inside was like going back 100 years in time. Each of the members had a caricature done by the cartoonist of the Birmingham Sports Argus, indicating the members hobby. My brother's had him sitting on top of a bi-plane. There was wood panelling everywhere, decommissioned muskets, german army helmets from WW1. It was a wonderful environment. I used to call in from school and spent many a happy evening absorbing the atmosphere.

That sounds a great place. What happened to it and did the toilets have flowers in them?
