Effective JavaScript: 68 Specific Ways to Harness the Power of JavaScript by David Herman is becoming just a tad turgid, so I am supplementing it with The Comedienne by V.G. Lee.

Tallis should be read with a glass of wine ;-)
Jim wrote: "It's only because they have problems using a corkscrew!"More and more bottles are screw top these days. The one I had with my christmas dinner was, and it was a seriously nice wine.
are cats better with screw tops? I wasn't sure if they'd progressed beyond just pushing them off the counter and licking the wine up off the floor :-)

I was drinking mince pie liquer! No, I wouldn't trust them with a screw top either, Lucy's idea is to push things off the worktop and hope it breaks!
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "I was drinking mince pie liquer! No, I wouldn't trust them with a screw top either, Lucy's idea is to push things off the worktop and hope it breaks! ..."Tallis is very open minded over that sort of thing. But I'm glad you have cats who play to their strengths :-)
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Thanks, I'll go off the pdf, gives me bonus points :)"delighted to be of service :-)
There are also points for books in epistolary format, I think it counts. Thought I better not claim points for having a quirky oddball main character though ;)
Tried the Maigret series, which I know my father enjoyed. The first one really surprised me with the level of racism and anti Semitism - reading the papers you'd think only the UK ever had issues like those. Tried book 4 as well after, and all that was gone: just the dark, gritty detective story left.So a series tip: if you want to read Maigret, don't start until book 4!

Yes, there was. But I expect that penguin insisted that the translation was quite accurate, as they seem to be recently revamped for Kindle

There's a series of 3. Very Jasper Fforde in tone.
Kath wrote: "Can't stand Jasper Fforde. Tries too hard."He's an absolutely top bloke. Gave me an hour of excellent advice a few months ago.
Didn't like to say I feel the same way you do about his books, incl the latest (only the second I've ever bought. And the first was from Poundland! But I felt a bit obliged after he'd spent so long talking with me.)

I thoroughly enjoyed I Claudius, and the sequel too
Will wrote: "I thoroughly enjoyed I Claudius, and the sequel too"It's heavy-going, Will. But I'm enjoying it increasingly as I progress. 34% through currently.
Graves has a very Victorian style, doesn't he? But it is well worth continuing as the storyline heats up

I loved Aberystwyth Mon Amour - I'll have to go and bag the next couple of titles.
