Pretty good so far - it was probably you that prompted me to get it way back when I did.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Effective JavaScript: 68 Specific Ways to Harness the Power of JavaScript by David Herman is becoming just a tad turgid, so I am supplementing it with The Comedienne by V.G. Lee.

Tallis should be read with a glass of wine ;-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Not sure that cats are big wine drinkers.

Jim | 21809 comments It's only because they have problems using a corkscrew!

More and more bottles are screw top these days. The one I had with my christmas dinner was, and it was a seriously nice wine.

message 13014: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments are cats better with screw tops? I wasn't sure if they'd progressed beyond just pushing them off the counter and licking the wine up off the floor :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I haven't done much bench testing to be honest.

I was drinking mince pie liquer! No, I wouldn't trust them with a screw top either, Lucy's idea is to push things off the worktop and hope it breaks!

Tallis is very open minded over that sort of thing. But I'm glad you have cats who play to their strengths :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Jim, I cant find a page count, how many is it?

message 13019: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments According to Amazon 67
But as a pdf it has 49

It's about 26,000 words :)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Thanks, I'll go off the pdf, gives me bonus points :)

delighted to be of service :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments There are also points for books in epistolary format, I think it counts. Thought I better not claim points for having a quirky oddball main character though ;)

message 13023: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments what do these points go towards? (other, obviously than points meaning prizes :-) )

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Not quite sure, if I'm honest!

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Tried the Maigret series, which I know my father enjoyed. The first one really surprised me with the level of racism and anti Semitism - reading the papers you'd think only the UK ever had issues like those. Tried book 4 as well after, and all that was gone: just the dark, gritty detective story left.

So a series tip: if you want to read Maigret, don't start until book 4!

Was there a change of translator?

message 13028: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Yes, there was. But I expect that penguin insisted that the translation was quite accurate, as they seem to be recently revamped for Kindle

He's an absolutely top bloke. Gave me an hour of excellent advice a few months ago.

Didn't like to say I feel the same way you do about his books, incl the latest (only the second I've ever bought. And the first was from Poundland! But I felt a bit obliged after he'd spent so long talking with me.)

message 13037: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh I'm sure he's a good sort. I just don't like his books which is all I know of him.

It's heavy-going, Will. But I'm enjoying it increasingly as I progress. 34% through currently.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Graves has a very Victorian style, doesn't he? But it is well worth continuing as the storyline heats up
