I have found, on occasion, where the book isn't great it can make a good film/TV series. Not always but sometimes. They don't stick with me the same way a good book does though so I will have to have a think to remind myself of an example (maybe that says it all!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished Come A Little Closer yesterday, didn't like the ending. Going to readWhat She Doesn't Know next

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Two Miles Down by David McGowan. I've been reading his books for years (discovered him here, I believe). He usually wrotes sci-fi but this is more futuristic dystopian and I really enjoyed it.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just read Force of Nature by Jane (The Dry) Harper. Didn't find it half as exciting. Didn't care who died!

Shame. I really liked The Dry.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Me too. Maybe my expectations were too high.

message 12909: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've been reading the Bronze Horseman trilogy The Bronze Horseman, Tatiana and Alexander and The Summer Garden.

The first two I really enjoyed and would give 4* to, maybe even 5.

The third book starts way back before the end of the 2nd book which was really weird at first but I soon forgot about it when I got in to the story. I'm at the final section of the book now and it has gone too far, I may not finish it. It's a real shame because I enjoyed the first two so much despite the questionable themes (Alexander is abusive towards Tatiana a fair few times and I would say she was raped several times but she doesn't seem to mind, apparently for her no really does mean yes...).

I loved the first two and I'm so disappointed in this. I bought my books secondhand and it turns out that the author has edited the second book to finish earlier so the third book flows on from it without jumping backwards in the story. Obviously she didn't plan for a trilogy and it definitely shows.

Sorry, this is turning into a bit of a review but I'm really frustrated by the last book.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished What She Doesn't Know - really didn't guess the ending, lots of 'what' moments, think it will be a 4* book. Going to read Twisted next

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick. Lordy, that was a pointless slog. I agree with you, Kath!

Just started The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

message 12917: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I loved The Red Tent. Speaks volumes about the lot of women and the sisterhood they shared.

message 12918: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh the red tent is one of my favourite books!!

message 12919: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished A Man With One of Those Faces A Man With One of Those Faces by Caimh McDonnell , which was very good. I'll be looking for the rest of the trilogy.

Just started Aztec (Aztec, #1) by Gary Jennings Aztec.
Not sure about this at the beginning - very poor start.

But I'll give it a bit longer now it seems to have made a tentative stab at pondering if it should contemplate whether or not it could consider thinking about starting the story at some point in the near future.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished Twisted last night, need to find a new book now, that goes with my colour challenge.

message 12921: by Arbie (new)

Arbie Krae (arbiekrae) I recently finished Little Fires Everywhere which was a different kind of read for me but I did end up enjoying it.

I'm now reading Yes Please on and off, moving through Boundless in Torment pretty quickly, and starting The Gray House for a bookclub read. I don't usually read more than one book at a time but I'm trying to read more.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. Meh.

Just started Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

message 12923: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hmm. They say no two people read the same book. :)
Cloud Atlas is weird.

message 12924: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished (re?)reading The Sailor on the Seas of Fate The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (The Elric Saga #2) by Michael Moorcock and I still can't remember if I've read it before or not.

What I have read a couple of times before and am now rereading is The Return of Reginald Perrin by David Nobbs The Return of Reginald Perrin. If I remember correctly (see above) this is not as good as the 1st book, but better than the 3rd.

David Hadley Just finished The Hero With a Thousand Faces The Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell , which was very good and useful if you have an interest in story and where it comes from.

Just started Enlightenment Now The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress by Steven Pinker Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished The Witnesses - a nice short read that I dragged out. Think I'm going to try and force myself to read the Freddie Mercury book while in the bath, save my M R James Ghost Stories till a bit closer to Halloween

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Finished a PD James, The Lighthouse, and liked it, but found it less artful than before I started writing - but I have to hand it to her: the clues were there, and I missed them. I get a bit lazy when I read mysteries - but I always check at the end to make sure the author did her job providing the clues.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished a book last night! Sai King's Christine.

Of course it was a re-read but I desperately needed a comfort book.
It took me three bedtimes to get through the final 10%!

Yeah, I'm not reading for pleasure much at all at the moment.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Weird indeed. Good weird. Wow.

The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie. Needing something rather lighter than the brain-taxing Cloud Atlas. ...

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Have really enjoyed reading At Hawthorn Time by Melissa Harrison, and All Among The Barley . A real breath of fresh air. I did finish but didn't think much of the v irritating The Girl Before. Girl indeed. Then the even more irritating Last Seen. Felt like shaking one or two of the characters... and far too tortuous and contrived plot twists.
Now I'm reading The Lollipop Shoes which is a delight - and a good seasonal read in the run-up to Christmas.

David Hadley Just finished rereading The Return of Reginald Perrin The Return of Reginald Perrin by David Nobbs , which while not as great as the 1st book in the series is still good.

Just started rereading First Family (Amtrak Wars, #2) by Patrick Tilley First Family. I reread the first in the series a few months ago and still liked it, so I thought I'd try this one too. I know the series goes off in the latter books, though.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Patti, I love Christine. It was the book that first got me into King.

Presently reading The Sundowners, can't recall the writer. Reminds me pleasantly of Roy Clarke and Peter Tinniswood
