Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hi Tui. Just yell if you're lost - and someone will rush in and confuse you further! It's what we do!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments You're doing well Tui, you found this part of the Group. Anything is exactly what it means. Basically it's everything that Simon and Patti couldn't make sense of, so don't be surprised if you don't understand this part of the forum, I don't think it's meant to be understood, just enjoyed.

Just finished An Irish Christmas Janet and I did enjoy it.The story of a mother and son's flawed relationship told from the point of view of each. There is an underlying family secret. It is set in the early 60's.
Not very atmospheric or Christmassy but a nice light piece of escapism. I've paid for worse HeHe.
Edit...Forgot.Starting The Night They Nicked St Nick tonight.

message 1223: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 112 comments Just started reading "The Spanish Helmet" by Greg Scowen. It's pretty interesting. So far it's about people tracking down leads to alternative histories of New Zealand, my home country.

Just started (literally, about 3 pages last night) Carl Ashmore's Bernard and the Bibble. I've enjoyed all Carl's books so far so I know this will be lovely too.

message 1231: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Just finished The Coldest Fear by Rick Reed & Starting Tom Fleck this afternoon. I really enjoyed the Kings Speech Sarah, hope you do too. I am looking forward even more to starting Tom Fleck after seeing your comment Ignite, you always give good recomendations to me, thank you.

Janis Moore | 22 comments Just finished An Irish Christmaswhich I really enjoyed, perfect Christmas book and just started Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley. A light-hearted easy read for Boxing Day.

message 1233: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments gave up reading that R J Parker book. Rubbish. Bit raging. AVOID it. I like my crime books not speckled with personal commentary about how stupid people are for not catching them sooner or how sick the perps are. I know they are disgusting human beings, that is why I read about them.

Started another one by Trinidad Giachino. Someone needs to take that thesaurus off them. Eurgh. Gave up on that quickly too.

Next book? 3 Minute Murder Mystery

message 1234: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks for those avoids, Louise. They are just as useful as recommendations, in my opinion. Especially when it comes to some freebies.

message 1235: by Elle (last edited Dec 26, 2011 10:09AM) (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I've begun the daunting task of wading through freebies and I am taking no prisoners. I feel a bit guilty giving bad reviews for indie books especially but eurgh, some are awful!!

message 1236: by Pat () (last edited Dec 27, 2011 12:24PM) (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Still on my space wars series with finished and started Courageous
Valiant Still enjoying them but will need a change of mood soon. Am I the only one to read
this type of book?

message 1237: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Hi Pat - I'm a fantasy and sci-fi fan myself but haven't read much of it lately. You are definitely not alone

message 1238: by Pat () (last edited Dec 27, 2011 12:31PM) (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Louise-Lesley Thats good to hear, I was beginning to wonder if I was out of step again with everyone.
Well I have finished Valiant tonight. Still a good read but this one had a scattering of spaces in words (format ?) not enough to spoil the thread but enough for me to notice. Now starting Relentless
I have Victorious left in this series to read after Relentless. Time for a spot of leave then.

message 1239: by Jay-me (Janet) (new)

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Just finished The Kult - and I need to read one more book to reach my target for the Goodreads 2011 challenge. I can't decide which one, but I'll not start reading tonight - I know it is early but I'm tired & I have to be up early again tomorrow as I'm on dog walking duty. Smiley

You see, I don't class it as horror really. More psychological thriller.

message 1243: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments No it is not pure horror IMO either, but it does have some "horrifying" bits don't you think? wouldn't like to find myself in front of one of those bodies I tell you !

My eyes were totally covered with a pillow near the end. I'm a complete wimp.

Word to wise: DO NOT READ ANYTHING I'M READING AT THE MINUTE. Eurgh. What is with these freebies I'm choosing?

I'm just going to quote you something from 3 Minute Murder Mystery said by a SWISS walking tourist and then well, you might understand why I wasn't exactly impressed by this MODERN-SET book.

"How terribly bad mannered, we haven't introduced ourselves, I am Frederick Volspur and this is my girlfriends Gertrude Heinze."

Then there is other jewels like;

'I am pleased to make your acquaintance'

Who in the sweet hell speaks like that?!

Next freebie attempt? Em... no idea. 22 Inches of Rain is technically next in line but I am thinking maybe go for a book next in a series I like.

Pat - I'm very much the same as you. I love paranormal romance/fantasy novels which seems to be a rarity in non-specialised groups like this.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments After 30minutes of trawling I've settled on A Dark Kiss of Rapture

message 1250: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Louise-Lesley if you like paranormal romance/fantasy you should like Terri Reid's books The Ghosts Of New Orleans - A Paranormal Research and Containment Division (PRCD) Case File
Darkness Exposed
Final Call
Never Forgotten
Good Tidings
Loose Ends
I have really enjoyed them. Hope you do too if you try them.
