I'm sure I didn't pay that much for it. It must have gone up in price.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I like Minette Walters. Am really enjoying my Rachel Abbott book, struggling to put it down

Got it from the library today. Two chapters in, a promising start.

This one Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I saw it on the shelves right after you mentioned it, and picked it up for that reason alone :-)

Will do. I've dnf'd three so far this year but I know I'll be completing this one.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah, I've looked at and deleted a load of books over the holiday, too.
Should probably do more of that.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good grief. That's a title and a half, Pam.

message 12363: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Obviously from the same school that gave us Fairport Convention's "Sir B. McKenzie's Daughter's Lament For The 77th Mounted Lancers Retreat From The Straits Of Loch Knombe, In The Year Of Our Lord 1727, On The Occasion Of The Announcement Of Her Marriage To The Laird Of Kinleakie"

message 12364: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Montague Summers was a character and a half. Good to see he included Vernon Lee and Amyas Northcote in the anthology, though.

Jim | 21809 comments Just out of interest, if he avoided Lovecraft did he include Clark Ashton Smith?

message 12366: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished (for our village book group) Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver. I always enjoy her work. This one felt like the ending fell of a cliff, but it's so detailed and delicious, I still felt it was a great read. 4* from me.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Jim wrote: "Just out of interest, if he avoided Lovecraft did he include Clark Ashton Smith?"

No, he wasn't in it either Jim. Mind you, I read someone else's long detailed review and their copy had about five or six stories mine lacked, although mine was nearly 700 pages. But they didn't mention Smith either, so I don't think he made it in. Possibly his material was a bit too baroque fantasy rather than supernatural. The majority were 19th C but there were several dating from the 20s and a lot were what you'd call traditional ghost stories.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Finished a science fiction novel yesterday which I'd mean to get round to for years, having read the first chapter as a Nebula award winning novella: Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntyre. Review follows - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1367354168.

Loved Dreamsnake. Bought it via the SF Book Club way back when. Fed it to my kids. They loved it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I was a member of the SF book club back in the day, too. The hundreds of hardbacks should still be in a basement in Canada. I wonder if they're still readable.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Finished Stranger Child - had to be a 5* read, I really struggled to put it down at times. Now going to read the sequel to it Nowhere Child

David Hadley Just finished Sharp Objects Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn which was all right, but teetered on the brink of being abandoned at times.

Just started Mr Pye by Mervyn Peake Mr Pye mainly because I just downloaded it.

Daniella Bernett | 31 comments Just finished "Divorce Can Be Deadly" Divorce Can Be Deadly (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries, #2) by Emma Jameson

Here's my Goodreads review:
"Divorce Can Be Deadly" is a page-turning delight. All is not what it appears at first glance. Spies, ancient local lore and murder meld together seamlessly in this engaging second installment of Emma Jameson's Dr. Bones mystery series set in World War II Cornwall. Sparks fly as Ben and Lady Juliet put their heads together to track down a ruthless killer. I eagerly await the next book.

Just started "The Lover's Portrait" The Lover's Portrait An Art Mystery (Adventures of Zelda Richardson, #2) by Jennifer S. Alderson

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Finished Nowhere Child yesterday, another good one. Can't remember the title, but started a Mel Comley book last night

Same for me too, Kath. Really enjoyed the story, but the main character just lacked total believability.

David Hadley Just finished Mr Pye Mr Pye by Mervyn Peake which I quite liked in the end.

Just started The Coven (Beatrice Scarlet, #2) by Graham Masterton The Coven, which is the 2nd in a series. The first one was pretty good, but maybe not as good as his Katie Maguire series: https://www.goodreads.com/series/9898...
