Pam wrote: "Read The Lives of Christopher Chant number 4 in the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, which is set years before the first one, and enjoyed it more - https://www.goodreads.com..."One of my favourite writers, but her first few books were a bit rougher-round-the-edges - by the time Lives of Christopher Chant was written she'd definitely hit her stride.
Elizabeth wrote: "If you continue to like them, you won't run out of Stephanie Plum stories any time soon... "Yes, I noticed there are one or two more in the series.
I don't think I'll ever have enough time to read all the serieseseseses I want to read, let alone all the books in them.
The second in Alice Castle's London Mysteries,The Girl in the Gallery is firmly in the cosy category, being full of observational humour, but it deals with some dark themes. A very good read.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Another 'second in a series' book next. Darren Humphries, I'm delighted to say, took my favourite character from a previous book and gave him his own story. Norris Goes West: A sequel to Spenser Goes North How good is that? This good -http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Yes, I feel like that a lot
Benjamin wrote: "Pam wrote: "Read The Lives of Christopher Chant number 4 in the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, which is set years before the first one, and enjoyed it more - https://www.g..."Yes though I don't remember having the issues with it when I read it many years ago that I did this time. Also, I loved Dogsbody which is fairly early though now I'm worrying I won't enjoy that as much if I re-read it .....
Just finished A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Stories in Our Genes
, which was excellent - a 5 star job. Highly recommended.Just started
Trouble With Europe, 4th Edition: How to Make a Success of Brexit and Reform the EU.
I finished Alias Grace. Solid four stars. Some wonderful prose in it but the story got a bit draggy in places.I'll watch the miniseries.
I've started and am loving The Seven Rules of Elvira Carr.
It's very Curious Incident of the Dog in Night time-ish.
Hard to put down.
Finished Donna Leon's Earthly Remains which was enjoyable enough but somewhat slight, The Thirst which, apart from the daft ending, I also enjoyed, having 'gone off him' with The Snowman. Also finished A Patient Fury which again I enjoyed, though I wish she hadn't bothered trying to shoehorn in an office romance where it isn't really needed. Read another of hers, A Deadly Thaw, which was OK but a bit too convoluted and far fetched. Now started one of my Christmas reads, which was on offer last year but I didn't get round to, Mystery in White
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Not the constant references to the main character's tits?"I'm afraid I agree with Patti re. Artemis by Andy Weir, which I have just finished reading. Most of my review looks like this:
"I felt repeatedly irritated by the author pointlessly sexualising his female protagonist. Frequent references to the likes of condoms, blow jobs and wet T-shirt competitions left me feeling that the author was abusing his own main character. Andy Weir sadly came across as a creepy sleazebag."
Maybe I'll find that harsh later, but I feel pretty repulsed right now. How was Andy Weir not reined in for this sexist nonsense? ... Having said that, I did enjoy the story and being in the moon's sole city.
... And just started Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller.
Just finished
. Meh, TV show was better.Just started a reread of
in advance of the movie next year . . .
Just read The Secret Notebook of Sherlock HolmesWhich is rather fun and currently free for a couple of days :-)

I bought it, no idea why as I have my Kindle Unlimited trial till mid Feb!!
Read two more Morgaine books by C J Cherryh:Book 2 - Well of Shiuan - review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2219441259.
Book 3 - Fires of Azeroth - review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2225417471.
For some weird reason, in My Books, Fires of Azeroth isn't showing up at the top of my read page because it keeps deleting the date read from the list view. Tried several times adding it but then a refresh blanks it again.
Just finished Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. So-so.Just started Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction by Timothy Gowers. Surprisingly entertaining.

Have you told goodreads about the glitch?
I've not been reading much since I finished Seven Rules...I've been picking away at a mediocre mystery that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. It's a fine bedtime book. It's certainly not keeping me up!
Think I'll probably set it aside and look for something more engrossing today.
Hoping I'll find something good in the 398 books I've currently got on my kindle.
Jim wrote: "Just got round to reading A Surprise for Maureen which is my first Maureen story. A gem :-)"I love them all. Maureen's a force of nature!
I just finished "Hell Bay" by Will Thomas. It is part of his Barker & Llewelyn mystery series. Here's my Goodreads review:"Laced with intrigue and foreboding suspense, this mystery leaves the reader breathless to see who will be the next victim. "Hell Bay" can be compared to Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians." I think this is the best book in Will Thomas's wonderful Barker & Llewelyn series."
Just started "Divorce Can Be Deadly" by Emma Jameson
Just finished Horses, Heifers and Hairy Pigs: The Life of a Yorkshire Vet can't remember the last time I finished my books on NYE
My last book of 2017 was The Secret Notebook of Sherlock Holmes by Liz Hedgecock. It's a real bit of fun and I enjoyed it a lot.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Beverley Carter's Sleeping Dogs is the third in a mystery series but reads very well on its own.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

yes I enjoyed it as well, it's fun :-)
Kath wrote: "I think it was your recommendation that persuaded me, Jim."ah well
The boy dun good then ;-)
Just finished Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction by Timothy Gowers. Very well written and a comfortable amount of mind-blowing.Just started Handbook to Higher Consciousness by Ken Keyes Jr.--re-reading this wonderful text for the new year.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Pam wrote: "Read two more Morgaine books by C J Cherryh:Book 2 - Well of Shiuan - review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

Thanks, Patti, I was going to report it to the librarians, but with the NY etc in the way, didn't get round to it. Checked it again today and this time the finish date appears to have 'stuck' and the book has now appeared at the top of my Books Read list.
The final book I completed in 2017 (started another on 31st Dec and completed it yesterday) was The Flesh Eater by John Gordon. Reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2240881340.
The first of 2018 - The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. Reading what others have said, I seem to be in a minority in being underwhelmed by this book - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2241030811.
I read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine almost non-stop on the flight.About 70% in now and very engrossing!
Just finished rereading The Code of the Woosters
which was excellent, of course.Just started rereading (I think)
The Hand of Oberon.
David wrote: "Just finished rereading The Code of the Woosters The Code of the Woosters (Jeeves, #7) by P.G. Wodehouse which was excellent, of course."Laugh-out-loud excellent. Maybe the funniest book I've ever read.
Just started Mrs Bradshaw's Handbook and am hoping to get my miner's pasty with avec and anorankh when I reach the end.

Generally I'd recommend P.G Wodehouse
I finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.Excellent book. Just what I needed.
Apparently, it's one of Goodreads best books of 2017. Well deserved, in my opinion.
I've started a new Minette Walters. New to me anyway. It must be recently published. Set in the 1300s, it's a fictionalised account of the plague years. Only 3% in, but it's started well. Have a link.
The Last Hours
I've requested Eleanor Oliphant from Netgalley. Can't see me paying £7:99 for an unknown author (to me) on kindle. They're having a larf, innit?I loved The Last Hours.
I've just finished The Alabaster Hand and Other Ghost Stories, and am about to start North and South
