I liked [book:Just One Damned Thing After Another|29661618], David and I've read one or two of the rest of the series too. Entertaining even if the body count rate is quite high ;-)

I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of them. I was very impressed.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Here's my review for Nearly Dead by Conrad Jones. Gruesome but gripping!

http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

And for Michael J Malone's House of Spines, a gothic-feel Big House story. Very good indeed.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Finished Lexie Conyngham's Jail Fever. Fantastic, and different from her historical whodunnits. Speculative, just a touch of sci-fi - it's superb. The lady can turn her hand to any style!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished Mudbound a few days ago. Was alright. Nothing startling.
I've started Sing, Unburied, Sing, after trying and discarding several books I've had cluttering my kindle for a while.

Don't know how I'll get on with it.

I think I need some happy reading so I've snagged a few what are meant to be humorous books. Might dip into a couple of those today.

message 12258: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) I've just finished Graham Joyce's Dark Sister, and I'm a little torn what to start next.

Tim | 8539 comments Just finished Leviathan Wakes. An epic book and one of very few 5 star reads this year.

message 12260: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The Good Samaritan by John Marrs. You'll love or hate this because of the subject matter but I loved the way it was written. The way we gradually come to realise what's going on.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments A Surprise for Maureen by Jonathan Hill. A quick read, a free read and a funny read. Ticks all my boxes!

Daniella Bernett | 31 comments Just finished "The Inheritance" by Charles Finch. It's part of his Charles Lenox mystery series. The Inheritance (Charles Lenox Mysteries #10) by Charles Finch

Here's my Goodreads review: "Another elegant and sophisticated mystery from Charles Finch. The lovely prose makes the story flow like waves lapping gently onto velvety sands. I think this is the best book yet in the Charles Lenox series. I cannot wait for the next book."

Just started "Black & Blue" by Emma Jameson. It's part of her Lord & Lady Hetheride mystery series about two Scotland Yard detectives.
Black & Blue (Lord and Lady Hetheridge, #4) by Emma Jameson

message 12263: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Just started The Traitor Baru Cormorant, which is a very pleasant surprise so far - it's nice to read a fantasy novel focused on realistic politics and economics instead of the usual.

message 12264: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, which was wonderful. It has been compared to A Man Called Ove by many, and I totally agree. Having given Ove five stars though, I had to give Eleanor 4.5 (well, four).

Just started Artemis by Andy Weir. Six percent in. It's shaping up so far.

message 12268: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You approached it differently, I think, Kath.

Or perhaps we had different expectations. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

I was hoping for a completely immersive experience as I had with The Martian.
When the characters and the plot (especially the crap plot and oh so politically correct stereotypical characters) kept pulling me out of the thin storyline...

Remind me what you found worthy?

Not the constant references to the main character's tits?

message 12270: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments It's in my Audible app. But I've got a queue of 5 or 6 from the recent sales, so I probably won't get to it before Christmas . . .

message 12271: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Truth is not always true by Nick Wastnage. A twisty and unpredicatable thriller. I wish I'd liked the characters more but I did want to know what happened.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Finished two books - Carnacki, the Ghost Finder - not a good classic I'm afraid, I only continued with it as it was a short story collection and hoped they would improve. Then finished Deeper Water which I nearly gave up on, as it has a lot of religious overtones, but glad I continued, it was a good legal drama as long as I skimmed the religious bits. Now started His Third Victim and Web of Deceit: A DI Sally Parker novella.still dipping into The Caller

I have to admit to rather liking Carnacki, but different tastes and all that!

I've just finished The God of Small Things (which proved excellent), and made a start on Rosie Garland's Vixen.

message 12274: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I really enjoyed The God of Small Things. Read it quite a while back.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Kath wrote: "I really enjoyed The God of Small Things. Read it quite a while back."

I wasn't so sure - I remember thinking it was a bit curate's-eggy.

message 12276: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I thought it was hugely thought-provoking.
I like eggy sandwiches!

message 12277: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Me too - but I prefer not to find curates in them!

message 12278: by Kath (new)

Interesting origin.

message 12282: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Mixed praise, at least!
I've finished Vixen, and am on to Ada Palmer's The Will to Battle - been looking forward to this one.

David Hadley Just finished Payback Payback by Kimberley Chambers , the 2nd book in the series.

Just started One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich One for the Money, which is the 1st book - apparently - in a long series.

Also just finished The Talisman The Talisman (The Talisman, #1) by Stephen King , which I thought was a reread, but it turned out not to be. Not the best King - or Straub - I've read.

Just started rereading The Code of the Woosters (Jeeves, #7) by P.G. Wodehouse The Code of the Woosters

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Re-read Charmed Life by the late great Diana Wynne Jones after many years and didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped, as the whole thing depends on a failure to communicate which, on the part of the adults at least, seems inexcusable. Review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1366155155.

message 12287: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Up to date with the Sarah Maas' Throne of Glass series. I was originally put off by the gushing reviews (yes, I know) but found it an adult fantasy series with a heroine I liked very much. I think quite a while ago Jim and Will? were bemoaning the lack of strong heroines but this one satisfied me.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments If you like strong heroines then I have just finished Clockwork Boys which I enjoyed a lot

I think Kath was commenting about lack of decent heroines?

I know somebody said that they were fed up with the lack of strong heroines who were recognisably women and not just men who were anatomically female (That might or might not have been Kath)

message 12290: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Might have been me. I've had a sleep since then. But I agree.

Tim | 8539 comments I'm about halfway through Cocaine Blues, the first of the Phryne Fisher murder mysteries. I watched the TV versions last year and enjoyed them. I have to say though that I'm finding the book kinda turgid and heavy going: the TV version was much more enjoyable!

message 12294: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished One for the Money One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich which was pretty good. Enough for me to look for the next one in the series anyway.

Just started Trinity (Wars of the Roses, #2) by Conn Iggulden Trinity, which is the second in his Wars of the Roses series. Only vaguely remember reading the first one some time ago.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Just finished Will Once's To Know the Dark, which I thoroughly enjoyed, particularly as it utilises to great effect the kind of language play we know he is capable of.
