Karen Lowe | 1338 comments ... which reminds me, I must download some more. I do love her books.
Just finished Missing Rose which I enjoyed, and now started SS-GB - it has to be better than the TV adaptation.

Phill Featherstone (phillf) | 25 comments Just finished The Fault in Our Stars by John Green ; probably one of the last people on Goodreads to read it. Just started Stronger Than Skin by Stephen May - gripping from the start.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Haven't read much so far this holiday as we've been out and about every day.

I finished The Sculptress

And started My Brilliant Friend on Dave's reccie.
It's not bad so far.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Empire by Paul Dale. Intelligent, funny, satirical fantasy. It's everything I love about the genre. Book three in a trilogy so you need to read them all - really you NEED to read them all!

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Body of Evidence (Kay Scarpetta, #2) by Patricia Cornwell which I found not bad, better, then not bad again, and just started Cruel & Unusual (Kay Scarpetta, #4) by Patricia Cornwell which I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying.

I do like Patricia Cornwell.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I've just finished Jack Daniels Stories - as is typical for a collection of short stories, it was a mixed bag, and I did nearly give up as I hated the ending of the second story. Interesting that it is called Jack Daniel's Stories when she doesn't appear in some of them!! Trying to finish Sycamore Row this weekend

message 11661: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments I'm reading all those we have in sequence and generally enjoying them, but i do find some sections easier to get on with than others. I like pace in my crime and I think Cornwell varies from very pacey to rather slow. That said - overall so far I'm enjoying her.

message 11662: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Night Soldiers Night Soldiers (Night Soldiers, #1) by Alan Furst which was pretty good stuff, maybe a bit of a slow starter.

Just started The Trap (The Butlers #1) by Kimberley Chambers The Trap

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Just finished Sycamore Row, 4* read, some of the court bits dragged on. Well worth the wait though

Jim | 21809 comments Just read

Peter and the Starcatchers

It's a 1p paperback of a £4 kindle I'm afraid. I picked it up from a charity shop for £1, when I had a couple of hours to kill in a quiet town somewhere in the heart of England
It took me a couple of hours to read, it's the 'prequel' to Peter Pan and is well done.
It's actually aimed at children/teen but is great fun. I loaned it to my daughter who is now older than either category and she too enjoyed it immensely. Falls nicely into the ripping yarn category ;-)

Still reading How to Teach Quantum Physics to Your Dog by Chad Orzel.

Oh jeez.

I thought it started out well but it became a bloated mess as it went on.
Let us know what you think.

message 11669: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've not finished a book in ages. I keep setting them aside and starting something else.

I've only got 25% of My Brilliant Friend left. I should make a concerted effort to finish it today.
It well written but not a lot seems to happen in it. Definitely not one of those books you've just got to keep reading to find out what happens next.

message 11670: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) Finished reading 1984. Chilling, especially given recent events, but glad I finally got round to reading it. Just started I Saw a Man. Enjoying so far - beautifully written.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Small Hand: A Ghost Story by Susan Hill. It's a supernatural novella and very atmospheric.

http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I also recently finished Dying Games, Dying Games the new Steve Robinson, due out on May 4th. I've reviewed here but will hold back on my blog until I can put on Amazon too. You won't be disappointed!

As above, my review is at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1961942775. Basically, thought the characterisation and action was good but the basic premise had holes in and as they went along these became worse and worse and the actual story became less and less convincing.

message 11674: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished The Trap The Trap (The Butlers #1) by Kimberley Chambers which was a fairly decent iteration of the East-End villain family tale (yes, they did love their mum). I'll probably give the next in the series a go one day.

Just started Fellside by M.R. Carey Fellside, hoping it is good as his The Girl with all the Gifts, not bad at all so far.

Just finished rereading Double Whammy Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen , which - of course, as it is a Hiaasen book - was very good indeed.

Just started rereading (I think) Sign of the Unicorn (The Chronicles of Amber #3) by Roger Zelazny Sign of the Unicorn. It must be getting on for about 40 years ago, or so, I read some (maybe all) of the Amber books. So I'm presuming this is a reread, but it may not be.

David Hadley Kath wrote: "Oooh, Fellside sounds good. I loved TGWATG so I await your report. That looks rude, now I've shortened the title..."

It is different from TGWATG, but not - so far - in a bad way.

Reminds me of Jo Walton or Christopher Priest to some degree - in a reality slipping sideways sort of way.

I've seen some of her novels in The Works, but I was reluctant to add them to my paperback TBR pile, since it's now both taller than me and wider!

Just started the "new" (okay, so it's a year old) Jefferson Tate on Audible - Kindred (Genealogical Crime Mystery #5) by Steve Robinson

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I just read (in two days) our own Kelly Clayton's brilliant Blood In The Sand: Volume 1. Just bought Book 2, and I don't often do that straight away.

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just started Hornet's Nest (Andy Brazil, #1) by Patricia Cornwell and I'm really enjoying it. The writing style is so much better for me than the first person approach of the Scarpetta series, and the humour is great too. Just finished Unnatural Exposure (Kay Scarpetta, #8) by Patricia Cornwell which wasn't at all bad, but slow moving then I thought ending rather abruptly.

Added to my TBR - whoops another one!

message 11688: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Fellside Fellside by M.R. Carey which was very good indeed, although - I thought - not quite up to The Girl With All the Gifts - but close, very close.

Fellside is I suppose not a ghost story in the same way that TGWATG is not a zombie story.

Just started The Black Ice (Harry Bosch, #2; Harry Bosch Universe, #2) by Michael Connelly The Black Ice, the 2nd the the Harry Bosch series.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Barbara Erskine's Hiding from the Light: I've been going through some of hers for a future blogpost and this one is my favourite so far. Started another but can't remember the title!

message 11691: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Hornet's Nest (Andy Brazil, #1) by Patricia Cornwell & started Southern Cross (Andy Brazil, #2) by Patricia Cornwell . I love the humour in both of these, especially Hornets Nest, and the change in writing style from the Scarpetta style. Also much more pacey which I like.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Armada by Ernest Cline, which I rather enjoyed.

33% through Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. I've long been fascinated by the Spanish Revolution, and this is filling me in well.

Heard good things about The Ghosts of Belfast but Amazon was doing one of those odd things when I went to buy it and the only copy for sale was a used one for several thousand pounds - decided to wait!
