Jim | 21809 comments working collies can do professional contempt better than any body else I've ever met

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments I love border collies. One visited our flat once. My flatmate hated dogs and was very rude about this one on a previous visit. Dog hid till flatmate was standing mid-room, pontificating. Dog crept silently up behind him then shot up to his shoulder-height, shouting 'Wwwoooffff! right in his ear. It was priceless.

And another one saved my grandmother's life.

Just finished The Art of Waiting; just started When the Doves Disappeared

Jim | 21809 comments Lexie wrote: "He was extremely cool, was Moss!"

he would be, he even had a proper Border Collie name.

(No Border Collie should have a name containing more than six letters and four is the perfect number)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments I think there are probably enough Mosses to coat a county or two, though.

And the one that saved my grandmother was called Quinquagesima (though Quink for everyday use). The cat was called Pentecost.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Jim will get that! ;)

message 11458: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) I used to have a border collie - best dog ever: smart, faithful, protective, great fun and great company. I called her Tramp, as in Lady and the... because she looked so ragamuffin as a puppy. She was a lady though. ;)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Journey: Book Two of From The Sky: an alien invasion series. I loved Book 1 and this makes the story more twisty and involved. Really enjoyed it. The only beef was that it didn't really end - book 3 better not be long in coming!

Jim | 21809 comments Kath wrote: "'Tis indeed. The Sunday before Ash Wedesday."

as opposed to Septuagesima sunday which was the 9th Sunday before Easter :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments When is Sexigesima then?

message 11465: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Gingerlily - Mistress Lantern wrote: "When is Sexigesima then?"

basically at one point they extended Lent, started it earlier, rather than at Ash Wednesday
So they added three more weeks and three more Sundays (althrough Sundays were not fast days )
Quinquagesima which was the Sunday before Ash Wednesday
Sexigesima which was the Sunday before that
and Septuagesima which was the one before that

I remember being told of their names as a child in Sunday school but they served 'no purpose' in that nothing happened specially on them. Effectively they remained so you had long weird names to amuse children with :-)

I'm not sure about other denominations or even other CofE congregations :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've never even heard of most of these. Mind you I am a heathen :)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I do remember hearing all those names in my Church of Ireland youth. I don't think they were ever explained to me though.

message 11468: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I suspect that they linger in the 'Anglo Catholic' tradition and probably in the Catholic church as well. So that might explain why I only ever heard about them as a child and I doubt they made Scotland :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well we loved our secessions in Scotland! I was doing some reading recently and I'd got through Burghers, Anti-Burgher Old Lichts and Associate Presbytery before I'd even reached the Wee Frees... So keeping your head around the calendar as well might have been a step too far :)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments That's kind of Judean People's Front vs. People's Front of Judea!

As well as all the different flavours of Baptist.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Almost exactly like, in fact

message 11472: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Scottish denominations are almost as confusing as American ones :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It was Water Tuesday this week. Part of Novrus as some of you know.

The secretary was going round playfully sprinkling water on everyone and got it all over my planning documents. I may have snapped at her.

I re-read the same ten pages every night before falling asleep all week.
My goal is to make it to the end of the chapter this weekend...

Ah, in days gone by when I needed it for work, I had a fantastic diagram showing all the splits and reunifications - and knew some of it off by heart! - no longer though. Not very useful for an Scottish Episcopalian.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Every time I see the Wee Frees mentioned I have a vision of tiny blue figures drinking and swearing up a storm!

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just started (and I shouldn't have, shouldn't have been naughty and bought a new book but maybe book festival purchases don't count) Whisky From Small Glasses. It looks as if it's going to be as funny as the author.

Stitch In Snow by Anne McCaffrey Lovely tale, I really enjoyed re-reading it for the six or seventh time. I have so many waiting to be read, but it is nice every now and then to revisit old favourites.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Finished No Safe House - didn't matter that I'm not sure I've read the first book, I really enjoyed it. Then started my first classic of the year, already 31% in The Secret Garden - I did read this as a child.

Great place to start, it was my third, and the best so far I thought.

David Hadley Just finished Tennison Tennison (Jane Tennison #1) by Lynda La Plante which was very poorly written and very obvious, but still I read it to the end.

Apparently the telly version of it starts this week - hope it is better than the book.

Just started Dead Gone (DI Murphy and DS Rossi, #1) by Luca Veste Dead Gone by one half of the Two Crime Writers podcastTwo Crime Writers podcast. Liking it quite a bit so far.

Just started a supernatural story - I think Pat would love this. I'm half way through and I didn't start it till last night!

I'm surprised you'd read anything purporting to have a shocking twist right in the title.
Just the title puts me off.

Your welcome Elizabeth. I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

Have you read The Kilternan Legacy ? It is also set in Ireland and I think it is one of her best. The Kilternan Legacy by Anne McCaffrey
