Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments She wrote Brokeback Mountain, I think. Haven't read the book but I loved the film.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments That was one of the short stories

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Is that the one that won her the Pulitzer?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I didn't know that. Yes, the Shipping News apparently. I enjoyed the film too, although it was very different from the book. Kevin Spacey and bizarrely, Judi Dench

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'll have to look for it.

message 11206: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments The Shipping News was great, very atmospheric. Just started The City & the City - heard good things about it and it's going well so far.

message 11207: by David (new)

David Hadley I liked the shipping News and the collection of short stories that includes Brokeback Mountain I think I've maybe read Accordion Crimes too.

Quite liked the City and the City too, but then I like people like Borges, Calvino and Kafka - so it maybe not to everyone's taste.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Great line at the beginning of Barkskins.

'The mosquitos covered their necks and hands like fur.'

I'm really enjoying it.

Wouldn't it be great if we could cut n paste snippets of books in here?

message 11209: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) Just finished a Christmas gift:Murder under the Christmas Tree: Ten Classic Crime Stories for the Festive Season Really enjoyed it. Ten stories from renowned 'Golden Age' mystery writers, all cleverly plotted and constructed and in their distinctive writing styles. About to start A Landing on the Sun

message 11210: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Also just started Tollesbury Time Forever. Just finished The Dungeon House, which was quite enjoyable, and Long Deathly Christmas, where Verity tries her hand at a country house case.

message 11211: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Stop The World by Sherry Mayes. Very engaging and thought-provoking and apparently based on a true story.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, which I found pretty tiring.

Just started Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion by Sam Harris, which is thrilling.

message 11214: by David (new)

David Hadley Just started rereadingThe Day of the Jackal The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth for about the 3rd or 4th time.

message 11215: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Thanks, Kath!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Just finished Are You Sitting Down? - I nearly gave up on it in the beginning due to the formatting, but found it quite interesting, although needs a good edit - basically just a messed up family each chapter written by a different character. Need to see what challenge book to read next

message 11217: by Sam (new)

Sam Kates Struggled for a while with Seraphina and finally gave up at about 25%. Nothing at all wrong with the writing - characters and storyline simply not my cup of tea.

Continuing to struggle with Infinite Jest, but determined to finish it, even if it takes me another year or two.

Continuing my reread of the Discworld series with Small Gods. Been a while but loving it all over again.

John Haines (hainesy) | 8 comments Just finished the second Barry Trotter book - The Unnecessary Sequel, and moved straight on to the final book - Barry Trotter and the Dead Horse. None have been / are really any use, but the obsessive in me ('I've started so I (must must must) finish') means I will plough on. Frustrating really, the bloke can write well, but these parodies are ill thought out.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Going to start The Black Echo

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished the Dark Minds anthology Dark Minds Mostly excellent.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Finished The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1853974891.

message 11224: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've given up on Barkskins.

Not enjoying the new set of characters that's been introduced. I just don't care what might happen to them.

I've started Dying Light, the second MacBride.
Hasn't gripped me from the first page as the first one did. I'm hoping the pace picks up soon.
I'm also getting a bit fed up with being told how incompetent the cops are over and over again. It could do with a humour injection.

Here's hoping.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just reviewed the second of Lexie Conyngham's new historical murder mysteries, Death of a False Physician. Fantastic characters - which always make it for me - I I hope there's a Book 3 in preparation?

message 11232: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Broken Skin Broken Skin (Logan McRae, #3) by Stuart MacBride , the 3rd Logan McRae outing and it was a very good thing.

Just started Dead Girls Dancing (Katie Maguire, #8) by Graham Masterton Dead Girls Dancing the 8th in the Katie Maguire series and it is shaping up to be another good one in what is turning out to be an excellent series.

Thank you very much, Kath! I hope it hasn't put you off the medical profession! Book III is tentatively planned for fourth quarter of 2017 - another Murray in between and a couple of other things, if I get my act together.

David Hadley Patti (baconater) wrote: "Did you read the second MacBride and I missed your post, David?

According to the My Books thingy I read it towards the end of June last year. I gave it 4 stars, so I must have liked it a fair amount.

I read Cold Granite - it says - in 2011 and also gave that one 4 stars.

I do avoid reading books in the same series - & even by the same author - too close together though, mainly because of the dangers of comparisonitis.

message 11237: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Valentina by Susie Lynes. A great psychological thriller that really gets into the minds of a few characters.
