Recently finished a stonking short story Empire of the Hare: A short tale of Queen Boudicca's rebellionhttp://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
and another fairly quick read, A Very Coco Christmas (Prequel Short Story) which was light and funny - and sometimes you need that!

Patti (baconater) wrote: "Oh, good choice, David. How are you getting on with it?"I haven't... yet.
MiL has been in hospital so with visiting times etc, I've only managed the 1st sentence so far.
But we took her home yesterday, so maybe now I can get back to the book.
Just finished Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality
, which was interesting, but unconvincing.Just started

Just finished tech book Resilient Web Design by Jeremy Keith. A good read for web developers.Have been struggling through A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving for a month. ...

Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Finished In Stitches not sure what to read next"A very dangerous confession to make on this group :-)
With so many well read people you'll be deluged with advice from perceptive readers and writers alike
I'd recommend the back of a breakfast cereal packet ;-)

Good point - I have about 900 books on my kindle and about 100 paperbacks, so enough choice!
Finished All about Strange Monsters of the Recent Past: Neat Stories and posted a review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1851060669
Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippy DreamThat's the book Dave read yesterday.
Just finished The Vizard Mask by Diana Norman. For anyone interested, she was the wife of Barry Norman, the film critic.Anyway, fascinating plot, packed full of obscure historical detail, including the distressing ignorance of the way the plague was dealt with in Restoration London, and the cost of disposing of the body parts following the Bloody Assizes in the West Country.
Just started Brotherhood in Death by JD Robb. A very welcome Christmas present!
Just finished Tallis Steelyard, shower me with gold and other stories. and The Satanic Mechanic, somewhat different books! Tallis' biographer was on fine form, with some telling analyses of the literary marketplace in Port Naain. Tannie Maria has again usefully provided recipes. Will review in due course.
I finally finished the fourth Odd Thomas.Gonna read some short stories until I'm ready for another novel.
Just reviewed Duplicity by Sibel Hodge. Really enjoyed this. http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

She also wrote a cracking series under the pen name Ariana Franklin, the 'Mistress of the Art of Death' series,, which was set in medieval England, and beautifully written

I shall look for that.
Finished The Beat Goes On. I'm not usually a fan of short stories as they don't give me the chance to really understand the central character, but as these all feature Rebus, that didn't apply and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Just started Kathy's That Still and Whispering Place

Thanks, Pat!
Writers and Readers of Sri Lankan BooksI am interested in contacting writers and readers of books with Sri Lankan backgrounds.
I heartily recommend Stuart MacBride, group! Not if your delicate constitution is offended by swearing, though. It is set in Scotland, after all. ;)

More specifically Aberdeen - and yes, a bit of a rough sense of humour but very funny as well as very dark. He's a good bloke to talk to a group, too. He's friends with James Oswald who writes Edinburgh police procedurals with a supernatural twist, and has named a character after Stuart (fun fact for a Thursday morning).
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I heartily recommend Stuart MacBride, group!"Funny you should say that.
Just finished Odd Thomas
- which was very good indeed. Much better than the film, of course.Just started
Broken Skin, the 3rd in the Logan McRae series, and I thought the first two were excellent too.
I've grabbed every MacBride I could find. Pleased I have, too. I think I'm going to enjoy the lot.Is he an indie author, Lexie? Would be great if he'd pop into the group.
Pleased you enjoyed the Odd Thomas, David. Will you continue the series?

Sadly no, he's not indie - I think he got lucky just before being indie was really viable. He says that he first received a copy of his first book with that usual thrill everyone gets, rather tempered by the fact that it was the Swedish edition which for some reason came out first, and he doesn't speak Swedish. Should have gone indie there and then.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Pleased you enjoyed the Odd Thomas, David. Will you continue the series?"I will. I've always liked Koontz and I like Odd. Dunno when I'll get around to the next one though.
I've enjoyed the next three Odds but not as much as I did the first one. Perhaps I should have waited longer between them.Well, indie or no, I'm pleased Rosemary reccied him, Lexie.
One of the best books I've read this year Close Your EyesIn fact, this year, Robotham has become one of my favourite authors.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I've enjoyed the next three Odds but not as much as I did the first one. Perhaps I should have waited longer between them.I am finding the same with Odd Hours Patti, in fact have stopped for a bit to see if when I go back it will be better.
Just finished Cold Granite. Five stars! It was excellent.Gonna give Barkskins a whirl next, I think.
