Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments just finished the red tent by Anita Diamant, possibly one of my favourite books ever. have started Autumn Rose, think my taste in books has vastly changed in the last few years because this is tripe but I remember enjoying the first in the series. the author starts by not explaining who the protagonist is which lead to much confusion seeing as it is a different girl (took me a couple of reads of the first page to work out if it was a girl or a boy) from the first book. she then proceeds to spend the majority of her time looking at the ground and away from other people, I'm not sure how she manages to avoid walking into things.

not sure why I'm still reading it

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Put it down, Jud. Make the most of the bit of reading time you have before the new baby comes.

I recall I enjoyed the Red Tent, too.

You'd probably enjoy Birds Without Wings

And Henna House

I am skim reading it, skipping most of the descriptive bit. She has gone from hating and ignoring the Prince to pretty much dating him without actually dating him, it happened in the space of one weekend. It's really not predictable at all.

David Hadley Just finished Blacklands Blacklands by Belinda Bauer which, like all the other Belinda Bauer books I've read, was excellent stuff.

Just started See How They Run by Tom Bale See How They Run which is not bad, so far.

David Hadley Just finished The Shock of the Old: Technology and Global History Since 1900 The Shock of the Old Technology and Global History Since 1900 by David Edgerton , which was quite interesting.

Just started Why Is Sex Fun? The Evolution of Human Sexuality (Science Masters) by Jared Diamond Why Is Sex Fun? The Evolution of Human Sexuality, which judging by the first chapter is going to be more than quite interesting.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments So....

The new Stephen King is pretty shit.

I'll finish it but I'm very disappointed.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Maybe you need to try David's Sex book.

Not when you are the one left in the bath full of cold custard holding the watermelon while your bobble hat is covered in pickled beetroot stains.

It's in chapter three of the book, so you must be doing it wrong.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, #1) by Ann Leckie

I've posted my review of Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice - I had a few minor issues with it, but on the whole it's good science fiction:

The first was a bit disappointing compared to my memory of the series, but it picks up in book 2.

I accidentally read book two first and it has remained my favourite - pleased that you think it's holding up, because it's time I read the series again, and there's nothing worse than remembering a book with pleasure and not being able to regain that on a subsequent reading. That happened to me recently with Heinlein's Glory Road.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Finished Autumn Rose I don't recommend it, although I sort of enjoyed it, the grammar and phrasing made it quite difficult.

Started Cellar Door which I've had for years and never got around to. It was actually an accidental touch of the screen that opened it. Who am I to say no to fate? It's not at all what I expected but I'm enjoying it.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Currently reading THE COUNT OF THE SAHARA: Historical fiction at its best (wow, what a subtitle!); Ship of Magic, still, taking me ages; The Art of Staying Dead (excellent thriller); The Summer Book (lovely) and The Third Rule (another fine thriller). As usual, too many.

message 10728: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Same here, Lexie, always have at least 3 on the go. Summer Book is on my list.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Oh, and Half of a Yellow Sun. I like it but because I know it's all going to go pear-shaped I'm almost afraid to engage with the characters.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Finished Footprints today, enjoyed it. Think I'm reading The Collectors by Ron Sewell next, not sure after reading reviews

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just reviewed a couple of book I've read in the evenings while the grandkids were here. Two for Netgaley - one of which I didn't finish (it was the sixth in a series and was sent out as a thank-you for a previous review - how mad! I didn't know the characters and I didn't care) and one, a Booker long-listed book which shouldn't have got that far, to which I gave 3*.

My favourite, by a long way, was the third Edward book by Craig Lancaster Edward Unspooled. You need to have read the other two to follow his progress but it's one of the loveliest series I've read for a long time.

David Hadley Just finished Why Is Sex Fun? The Evolution of Human Sexuality Why Is Sex Fun? The Evolution of Human Sexuality (Science Masters) by Jared Diamond , while it was a good book, it could have lasted a bit longer and gone a bit harder and deeper in order to be really satisfying.

Just started Why People Believe Weird Things Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time by Michael Shermer Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time.

Also just finished See How They Run See How They Run by Tom Bale , which was okay, readable but a bit meh.

Also just started Human Remains by Elizabeth Haynes Human Remains.

I think it is long - perhaps too long - it does tend to sag in the middle.
