I'm trying to read The Sooner but finding it hard going. Not that it's badly written or anything like that - just that it's not my usual sort of thing so I'm finding it hard to get interested in. Has anyone else read this? I know that Dd loves it...

Just finished! I suppose there were a few odd things that didn't quite add up, and there weren't any twists and turns. I knew something would happen at the end that would surprise me, and read on to find out what it was. I may try Words to the Wise but I just looked at the blurb and it says 'without any recollection of his past'. Deja vu?

I've put aside The Sooner for the mo and have started to read The Blue Suitcase- it's fantastic, I can really recommend it. A slice of history brought alive.

I couldn't even finish the sample Karen. Life's too short.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Susan - Words to the Wise - this book is wonderful. And I'm not the author, his agent or a realtive! One of the impressive things is that the main character is a completely blank slate but the author managed to flesh him out and keep us interested. His character develops and we learn about him only as he does. It's amazing!
PS I like it a bit!

I've just finished Darren Hunmphries' New York City Legend. This is an intriguing fantasy but not in his silly/humourous style. Very gripping and amazing as the action unfolds. I don't think anyone with a heart could fail to fall in love with it.

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments Brought 1Q84 to Paris with me as I have time to read it. Have just finished The Owl Killers which was very good. I am also partially through The Magical Maze: Seeing the World Through Mathematical Eyes but my maths is not up to it. I might still finish it but it could take a while.

Sophie went to see him live a couple of years ago and found him immensely entertaining. She's also read his autobiography. Very interesting.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I just finished Words to the Wise which is amazing I recommend it to all so long as you dont mind fantasy and a lot of twisted goryness. Have now started Words to the Wise: Book Two which has grabbed me by the horns from the first chapter!

message 1018: by [deleted user] (new)

I've just finished The Blue Suitcase and it was excellent. I can really recommend it.

Now I'm reading Hamburg 1947: A Place for the Heart to Kip.

I loved the Owl Killers Mo, have you read her other books?

message 1020: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm re-reading Corenlius Harker's Words to the Wise: Book Two (4th time!) and have started The Definitive H.P. Lovecraft. 67 stores, one or two novella length. So far, I'm enjoying it.

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments I really enjoyed the John Barrowman autobiography (Anything goes) and am now reading Kathy Reichs' Spider bones. I do love her books, even the gruesome bits!

message 1022: by Jane (new)

Jane (beetlejane) | 82 comments I have just finished reading Silver which I enjoyed, and now on to The Honour of the Knights so far so good!

message 1023: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I love Kathy Reichs too Aunty Janet :o) She is what I did at uni (forensic anthropology). I got so excited the first time I read one of her books after I graduated cause I knew exactly what she was talking about!

I even used a quote from one of her books in my essay to get accepted onto the course!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished Tear In Time yesterday. I really liked it. Excellent depiction of war, great dialogue and plausible time travel.
I've not settled into another novel yet but I'm reading some great short stories.

message 1025: by Aunty Janet (new)

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments Wow Jud, that's amazing! Fascinating subject.... have you carried on in that line of work?

message 1026: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments no sadly not Aunty Janet :o( Would love to though! but need a PhD to qualify as a trainee forensic anthropologist and then once you have that you have to find a registered Forensic Anth who is willing to take you on as their protege, and there's only 6 of them in the UK maybe 7 if one of my lecturers is now registered.

message 1027: by Aunty Janet (new)

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments That's a shame. I did my degree with the OU. I did Psychology and Criminology, I fancied a masters in Forensic Criminology, but couldn't afford it. That was many moons ago and I've lost the study bug now.

Roger Cave | 129 comments Just finnished The Doomsday Prophecy, which was good, now on The Detachment , which is even better.

message 1029: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I feel all organised for a change, this morning I had some spare time before I had to leave for work so I decided I would pick a few books to read next. I saw one in my bookcase that i've been wanting to read for ages so I lifted that out and the 2 beside it that I havent read yet so I am now sorted for the next 3 books I am going to read The Help followed by The Old Curiosity Shop and then Small Island. It feels so good to know what I'm reading next

message 1030: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I loved The Help! I've got Small Island here in DTB but I just can't go back to holding a book...maybe I'll give it a go if you love it, Jud.

message 1031: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments those are all DTB's I am determined to read all the ones I have so I can then just focus solely on my kindle

message 1032: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've got probably 40-50 dtbs here I've not read yet. I'd stocked up with two suitcases full just before I got my kindle.

I should have a car boot sale. Well, a bike boot sale, really.

message 1033: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments you should read them! just go on a spree every so often, like I am doing. Read 3 or 4 one after the other then go back to the kindle afterwards

Small Island is a great book Patti. Andrea Levy writes beautifully.

message 1035: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Small Island was recommend to be by a friend reading it cause I have had the book for over a year now and still not read it and I am visiting her at the end of Jan so would like to return it

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Finished Have A Nice Weekend by one of 'our' authors,Ian Ellis. The story of a marriage breakdown from a mostly male perspective.Funny and tragic in turn.I really enjoyed it.
Started Words to the Wise book 2.

message 1037: by Maureen (Mews) (new)

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments The Help was one of the last DTB's I bought just before I got my Kindle, and I haven't read it yet. I've heard it's excellent though and I am sure if I had the Kindle version I would probably have read it by now. I keep putting it off though because it's a DTB. That said though, I still can't pass a charity shop without going in to look at the books. I've bought 4 in the last couple of weeks and they are just lying in the corner in a rather sad unread pile.

message 1038: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh you'll enjoy that Sarah!! I just read an amazingly intriguing part about _______ where ________ and W is like __________ AWESOME!!!!

message 1039: by Kath (last edited Nov 25, 2011 07:01AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The Help was brilliant - very thought provoking - especially considering it was set in my lifetime.
Small Island - wonderful -the Long Song - well I think I liked it more than Small Island but I was the only one in our Book Group that did. They liked it but not as much.

Edit - Yes, Sarah, Jud is RIGHT!

That may pay for getting about a third of them on Kindle format possibly if you are lucky. DTBs are for the bath. I never read in the bath then was told by the doc to wash my hair in a steroid shampoo and keep it on for 20 min , so I use the time getting dtbs read or listening to audible books on my Kindle depends how lazy I feel.

message 1041: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I got a waterproof book free with the Daily Mail recently.
Specially laminated for reading in the bath.I can't remember what it was called but think it was something water related.:@0.

Ros (Shizania) (goodreadscomRozzie) | 10 comments I just finished Take No More I was a little disappointed with it. Just started The Villa Triste so far so good.

message 1047: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished reading Harry's book Hamburg 1947: A Place for the Heart to Kip on the train on the way here! I can recommend it - very well written. Then I read While We're Far Apart which was ok but nothing special. I did some skip reading for bits of it but it was quite enjoyable. Now I'm reading light and silly - some romantic short stories that I can pick up and put down again - The Mammoth Book of Regency Romance.

:0)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I failed miserably to finish The Color of Magic so I started Flash and Bones and so far I am finding it a level way under her previous books. Kathy Reichs is one of my favourite authors but this feels choppy and quick.
