Finished A Grave in the Cotswolds
, number 8 in the Cotswold series although a bit of a misnomer as this one is narrated by the protagonist of her West Country series and there isn't a huge amount of Cotswolds in it.

I've posted my review for Will Macmillan Jones's novel Portrait of a Girl - I did have one issue with it, but otherwise it's a damn fine horror read:

Michael is too careful a reader and has spotted a hint for the ongoing series. Rats.
But thanks Michael for the lovely comments!
Just finished The Thread by Victoria Hislop. Really enjoyed it.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Just finished 'The Winter of Frankie Machine' by Don Winslow which I really enjoyed and started 'Paradise Sky' by Joe Lansdale. My third book by both authors and I always start off a little apprehensive in case this is the one where they drop the ball!
I needed cheering up and went outside of my usual loops with Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and I'm really enjoying it. Light heaviness.

Finished Affinity by Sarah Waters, which had a very slow start, but a fantastic end.Two thirds through Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote, which I'm really enjoying. Booked my flight to New York last night!

Nice! When are you off to New York?
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Nice! When are you off to New York? "Mid September, Patti. I've been aching to visit New York for the last ten years or so. I made it a 2016 resolution to DO IT.
Have you been?
Many times but not for years. I have no desire to go to the states anymore. Will do Broadway and all the touristy stuff? You'll enjoy it.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Will do Broadway and all the touristy stuff? You'll enjoy it."I've got such a long list, my head's swimming. Have read the whopping Lonely Planet guide and taken notes. ....... :-)

The Thread by Victoria HislopI really enjoyed this book. I've learnt a lot about Crete from being here and reading novels centred around Crete, but this is the first I've read with mainland Greece as the setting. Victoria Hislop, has, as usual, captured my imagination with her very real characters.
Just started
Few Are Chosen by M.T. McGuire
I've just finished reading Drew Wagar's novel Emanation, and while I had a few issues with it, it was a fantastic read - well worth checking out!

Finished another in the cosy crime Cotswold series - Malice in the Cotswolds
and a children's historical, A Pistol in Greenyards
.

I do like Sarah Waters. Her last book left me rather flat, though.
Must do a Google and see if she's got anything new soon...
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I do like Sarah Waters. Her last book left me rather flat, though."Anyone who's new to Sarah Waters, read The Paying Guests FIRST. It's excellent, but only if you haven't read her other ones.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "The Paying Guests was the one that left me flat."Exactly. In my extensive research, I have discovered that if you read The Paying Guests first, you love it. But if you read other Sarah Waters books first, then The Paying Guests, you don't like it.
So, my advice is to read The Paying Guests first.
Alternatively, you might think 'meh' and not read the others. I've had the experience of buying 2 books by an author, thinking the first was tripe and only starting on the other one because I'd already bought it - then finding out I loved it. So if people only bought 'the Paying Guests' they might decide to save their money which would be a shame as they would miss out on 'Affinity' and the others. You can see I gave Paying Guests a two star review - The Paying Guests whereas The Little Stranger rated 4 stars. (I read Affinity before I joined GR but I've kept it to re-read.)
I enjoyed 'The Paying Guests' and haven't read any of her others, so thanks for the reminder. I often forget to search for other books by an author I've enjoyed due to the pressure of my tbr list. I've just finished "After the Storm' by Jane Lythell but I can't say I'd recommend it. I've just started 'A Kind of Vanishing' by Lesley Thomson and it's got off to a good start.
Pam wrote: "So if people only bought 'the Paying Guests' they might decide to save their money which would be a shame as they would miss out on 'Affinity' and the others."My point is that people who've already read Fingersmith, Affinity, etc. judge The Paying Guests against those books, so that it falls short. Whereas The Paying Guests is excellent when not compared to Sarah Waters's other books.
I say this because over and over again I have experienced that people who read The Paying Guests first (like myself) love it. But others are disappointed.
It wasn't so much that it didn't measure up to the other books but that it did a complete genre switch in the middle which a lot of people find disconcerting. Though I think it picked up at that point because I'd found it rather slow/boring before that (deliberately not doing spoilers here). Just my 2 pence.
Just finished The Third Rule
, which was very excellently great indeed.Just started
Somewhere to Hide which is shaping up quite nicely.
I think the last book I finished was Slow Death by Quicksilver, loved it! I love all the Letho books and I have started The Passage which I am enjoying so far but still being introduced to all the characters and I also started My Cousin Rachel as an audiobook which was great for sewing at the weekend.
Finished Gray Justice very thought provoking and started a couple of conversations over the weekend. 4* read as I wasn't keen on the ending. Then started Sleep Tight , 50% in and enjoying it
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I'm in the midst of In the Tall GrassIt's great! Thanks for the reccie, David!"
I haven't read that one... yet.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "It's a novella. I'll read one of his novels next, I think."
I saw it was something like 60 pages long.
To Stephen King that is probably equivalent to writing a shopping list.
Hah - someone should write one of those parody books called 'Stephen King's Shopping List' , in his most overdone style!
Just finished His Kidnapper's Shoes by Maggie James. Interesting story looking at a child kidnapping from a different angle. I didn't empathise with the characters much, though.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've decided to read Doctor Sleep next. Until I completely recall the story and set it aside, anyway. It's not ringing any bells yet, but I'm sure I've read it before.

I wasn't sure about that, think it was because I read it in bits, think it's a book that needs a few hours devoting to it
I read some of it alone in bed last night before Dave came up and completely freaked myself out, Desley. I had to put the light on and everything!Fabulous!

Sounds good.
I've just finished re-reading Breach by Heidi Peltier. The author is a friend of mine, but I don't buy books by all my author friends, just the ones that appeal to me. This is very good. It's the upper age of YA and it has some very exciting moments in it, some unexpected encounters with sharks and a potentially disastrous romance.
Now I'm reading Paw Tracks at Owl cottage, which is about a couple and their cats. Purrfect for me.
