Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Finished A Grave in the Cotswolds A Grave in the Cotswolds (Drew Slocombe, #5; Thea Osborne, #8) by Rebecca Tope , number 8 in the Cotswold series although a bit of a misnomer as this one is narrated by the protagonist of her West Country series and there isn't a huge amount of Cotswolds in it.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Portrait of a Girl by Will Macmillan Jones

I've posted my review for Will Macmillan Jones's novel Portrait of a Girl - I did have one issue with it, but otherwise it's a damn fine horror read:

But thanks Michael for the lovely comments!

Mid September, Patti. I've been aching to visit New York for the last ten years or so. I made it a 2016 resolution to DO IT.

Have you been?

message 10418: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Many times but not for years. I have no desire to go to the states anymore.

The Thread by Victoria Hislop The Thread by Victoria Hislop

I really enjoyed this book. I've learnt a lot about Crete from being here and reading novels centred around Crete, but this is the first I've read with mainland Greece as the setting. Victoria Hislop, has, as usual, captured my imagination with her very real characters.

I do like Sarah Waters. Her last book left me rather flat, though.

Must do a Google and see if she's got anything new soon...

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "I do like Sarah Waters. Her last book left me rather flat, though."

Anyone who's new to Sarah Waters, read The Paying Guests FIRST. It's excellent, but only if you haven't read her other ones.

message 10426: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The Paying Guests was the one that left me flat.

message 10427: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "The Paying Guests was the one that left me flat."

Exactly. In my extensive research, I have discovered that if you read The Paying Guests first, you love it. But if you read other Sarah Waters books first, then The Paying Guests, you don't like it.

So, my advice is to read The Paying Guests first.

message 10428: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Alternatively, you might think 'meh' and not read the others. I've had the experience of buying 2 books by an author, thinking the first was tripe and only starting on the other one because I'd already bought it - then finding out I loved it.

So if people only bought 'the Paying Guests' they might decide to save their money which would be a shame as they would miss out on 'Affinity' and the others. You can see I gave Paying Guests a two star review - The Paying Guests whereas The Little Stranger rated 4 stars. (I read Affinity before I joined GR but I've kept it to re-read.)

Julie McLaren | 64 comments I enjoyed 'The Paying Guests' and haven't read any of her others, so thanks for the reminder. I often forget to search for other books by an author I've enjoyed due to the pressure of my tbr list. I've just finished "After the Storm' by Jane Lythell but I can't say I'd recommend it. I've just started 'A Kind of Vanishing' by Lesley Thomson and it's got off to a good start.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) I've read
Night Watch by Sarah Waters Night Watch and
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters Fingersmith
And enjoyed both

message 10433: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Pam wrote: "So if people only bought 'the Paying Guests' they might decide to save their money which would be a shame as they would miss out on 'Affinity' and the others."

My point is that people who've already read Fingersmith, Affinity, etc. judge The Paying Guests against those books, so that it falls short. Whereas The Paying Guests is excellent when not compared to Sarah Waters's other books.

I say this because over and over again I have experienced that people who read The Paying Guests first (like myself) love it. But others are disappointed.

message 10434: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments It wasn't so much that it didn't measure up to the other books but that it did a complete genre switch in the middle which a lot of people find disconcerting. Though I think it picked up at that point because I'd found it rather slow/boring before that (deliberately not doing spoilers here). Just my 2 pence.

message 10435: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'd never thought about the genre switch, Pam! You're completely right!

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I think the last book I finished was Slow Death by Quicksilver, loved it! I love all the Letho books and I have started The Passage which I am enjoying so far but still being introduced to all the characters and I also started My Cousin Rachel as an audiobook which was great for sewing at the weekend.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Finished Gray Justice very thought provoking and started a couple of conversations over the weekend. 4* read as I wasn't keen on the ending.

Then started Sleep Tight , 50% in and enjoying it

I saw it was something like 60 pages long.

To Stephen King that is probably equivalent to writing a shopping list.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Hah - someone should write one of those parody books called 'Stephen King's Shopping List' , in his most overdone style!

I wasn't sure about that, think it was because I read it in bits, think it's a book that needs a few hours devoting to it

Loretta (lorettalivingstone) | 419 comments I've just finished re-reading Breach by Heidi Peltier. The author is a friend of mine, but I don't buy books by all my author friends, just the ones that appeal to me. This is very good.
It's the upper age of YA and it has some very exciting moments in it, some unexpected encounters with sharks and a potentially disastrous romance.
Now I'm reading Paw Tracks at Owl cottage, which is about a couple and their cats. Purrfect for me.
