Just finished - just started

I'm kicking myself because about a quarter of the way into the first one, I had a strong sense that I wasn't going to like it, that the writing was poor and the plotting was pedestrian. But I kept convincing myself that it might be about to get better. If nothing else, I carried on with it waiting for Lisbeth to turn up.
Maybe sometimes we ought to trust our instincts a little more?

Just finished book 1 of Chronicles of Tornor by Elizabeth Lynn - Watchtower

Thanks for that, sounds just my sort of book - the 'sewing' in the title really sold it for me...
Just finished Finding Philippe: Lost in France... which had some charm, was an OK read. Now into Winter's Children - entertaining so far, not sure where it's heading.

So... just read 'Bats' by D H Lawrence!! some great lines, tho he doesn't seem to admire bats the way I'm sure most of us do now.
How times change. Protected species and all that. I loved the line about them 'grinning in their sleep'. But vindictive? Bats?

Four stars for a slow burner which hots up right near the end.

Finished The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, which I loved.
Now reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, which is good fun.

Working on a couple of beta-reads at the moment.

Now started Peter May's Coffin Road - I've loved all his books so far but this one I'm finding very difficult to stick with. Am a quarter through it and very irritated by the bloke's amnesia, rather than intrigued by it! Why do they all have to be handsome and have beautiful women jumping into bed with them? Anyway, persevering for now, but he'd better get his act together PDQ.

I've enjoyed all her books. The latest one was only okay, though.

Absolutely hooked by it.

Yep. I remember you saying about The Paying Guests.
The only one of hers I haven't read yet is Affinity - it is on the TBR list though.

Thanks!
The latest much advertised Kindle update which I finally got around to doing has suddenly meant that I could read Alex Roddie's short story / novella Cold Witness, which I bought ages ago and could never download properly. Hooray! It was gripping - really good stuff, very densely packed.

Also finished Coffin Road which was a bit disappointing, I thought. I didn't relate to the character at all, and felt the 'suspense' was a bit out of proportion, particularly towards the end. But I've loved so many of his other books, I can forgive him.

It was excellent - well worth the wait!

I've not read any of the Bryant & May series, but am now tempted to give em a go

They are wryly humourous, have a lot of London folklore woven in, and the characters are a rum bunch of misfits so there is a lot to like. I just found the basic plots/mysteries not very good in the vols I wasn't keen on.
