Just finished - just started
I'm the opposite with Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. I wish I had listened to my instincts and given up on it. As it was, I finished it (and got a part of the way into the second book). Wish I had that time back again.
That's very true. I know some people who absolutely adored them, and others who really didn't like them.I'm kicking myself because about a quarter of the way into the first one, I had a strong sense that I wasn't going to like it, that the writing was poor and the plotting was pedestrian. But I kept convincing myself that it might be about to get better. If nothing else, I carried on with it waiting for Lisbeth to turn up.
Maybe sometimes we ought to trust our instincts a little more?
I'm thinking that about that Llandor trilogy Will, where I was spitting feathers at the end of it, so annoyed (links to my reviews in my Challenge thread if anyone's interested).Just finished book 1 of Chronicles of Tornor by Elizabeth Lynn - Watchtower
which has left me in a calmer more contemplative mood thankfully.
by J Carson Black. Just finished and enjoyed. Starting
. Books 1 & 2 of the Chronicles of Lorna Cardinal
is book 3.
Kath wrote: "Just finished Sewing the Shadows Together by Alison Baillie. Excellent! http://www.ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk..."
Thanks for that, sounds just my sort of book - the 'sewing' in the title really sold it for me...
Just finished Finding Philippe: Lost in France... which had some charm, was an OK read. Now into Winter's Children - entertaining so far, not sure where it's heading.
Oh? Just Googled... D H Lawrence, 'Bat'. You are an education!So... just read 'Bats' by D H Lawrence!! some great lines, tho he doesn't seem to admire bats the way I'm sure most of us do now.
How times change. Protected species and all that. I loved the line about them 'grinning in their sleep'. But vindictive? Bats?
Just finished Don't You Cry from Netgalley - it'll be published in May. Four stars for a slow burner which hots up right near the end.

Finished Decider by Dick Francis, which I really enjoyed.Finished The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, which I loved.
Now reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, which is good fun.
Just finished Kill Me Again, another really excellent thriller by Rachel Abbott. I think this one might be my favourite so far!
Just finished The Black Echo
which was... all right, readable, but nothing special.Just started
Tipping the Velvet, oddly one of the few of hers I've not read yet.
Just started The Good Neighbour by A. J. Banner. I have a feeling that things won't go well for the main character.
Just finished Brave New World
This is my review — https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just started The Man in the High Castle
Just finished The Bailout. Funny, rather nasty and scarily plausible...http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Working on a couple of beta-reads at the moment.
Well, I finished Donna Leon's The Girl of His Dreams, which was a quick read (to NEC and back, by train ) and thoroughly depressing! Mainly about immigration, crime, and child abuse. Now started Peter May's Coffin Road - I've loved all his books so far but this one I'm finding very difficult to stick with. Am a quarter through it and very irritated by the bloke's amnesia, rather than intrigued by it! Why do they all have to be handsome and have beautiful women jumping into bed with them? Anyway, persevering for now, but he'd better get his act together PDQ.

We sure are Charlie. Looking forward to checking (feeling) them out.
Just finished CXVI Desperate Measures: A fast-paced international crime thriller by Angie Smith. What a fantastic finale. I can't wait to see where she's going to go next.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Finished SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas as a feminist book club read. Good grief. ...Finished Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, which was wonderful.
Just started The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett.
Still not even to the halfway mark in Aztec.Must read faster so I can start on the beta read for Will!
Just finished Tomb-yard Follies by Jim Webster. I love these characters!http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
'Tis! Got a review ready to park for your new book too, Lexie - but it might be tomorrow. I'm popping in here in between emailing friends and rellies about the new baby in the family. Then we're off to see him!
Lexie wrote: "Definitely a higher priority! All well?"Yes. C-section in the early hours of this morning - baby 10 days overdue but didn't respond to induction. Lazy lad! ;) Looking forward to a cuddle later today.
Just finished 'The Good Neighbour' by A.J. Banner. A light read. About to start 'Enchanted Red Cabrio' by L. M. Selby. This is a book written by a friend's friend and at the same time I will be finishing 'Zero, zero, zero' which is a heavy read by Roberto Saviano about the drug traffic trade. His book 'Gommorrah' was a frightening revelation of the underworld of Milan's criminal network.
Just reviewed a couple of books. First is The War, The Bones and Dr. Cowie which is almost a story of stories. It's a mystery which we piece together alongside the young Dr, Cowie. Fascinating and charming.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

The only one of hers I haven't read yet is Affinity - it is on the TBR list though.

The latest much advertised Kindle update which I finally got around to doing has suddenly meant that I could read Alex Roddie's short story / novella Cold Witness, which I bought ages ago and could never download properly. Hooray! It was gripping - really good stuff, very densely packed.
Just finished A Malmö Midwinter: An Inspector Anita Sundström Novella , short but a good read. I've enjoyed the series so far. Also finished Coffin Road which was a bit disappointing, I thought. I didn't relate to the character at all, and felt the 'suspense' was a bit out of proportion, particularly towards the end. But I've loved so many of his other books, I can forgive him.
Kath wrote: "I thought Cold Witness was really creepy and unsettling. Very good story."It was excellent - well worth the wait!
I have just started 'The Trouble with Goats and Sheep' and am awed by the skill of the writer. Narrated by a young girl, she captures the voice with humour and sensitivity.
Finished The Victoria Vanishes and now on Bryant and May on the Loose
and The Woman who Loved the Moon
Pam wrote: "Finished The Victoria Vanishes and now on Bryant and May on the Loose

"I've not read any of the Bryant & May series, but am now tempted to give em a go
I read book 2 first, The Water Room, and loved it but for me books 1, 3, 4 were a disappointment. Book 5 The White Corridor was better and I now think they are back on form with number 6. So far, number 7 is OK too. They are wryly humourous, have a lot of London folklore woven in, and the characters are a rum bunch of misfits so there is a lot to like. I just found the basic plots/mysteries not very good in the vols I wasn't keen on.
Finished Code Blue only 3*, it was a nice read but more romance and religion than medical in my opinion. Not sure what to read next, as we are near the end of the month
